Why would anyone "winter" in Canada? I thought the point is to get away from the cold weather.

2014-01-20 10:55:03 AM
It's nice to know that they've sobered up long enough to realize they are depressed.

2014-01-20 10:55:10 AM
I recall that something like 90% of Canadians live within 300 miles of the U.S. border.

Get full spectrum lights! I added 92 CRI lights at work about 5 years ago and my level of S.A.D decreased significantly. For $15 in bulbs my productivity during the winter has probably doubled to say nothing of my mental health.

Now we know why Canadian Farkers are so contemptuous of Americans, they don't understand how we can manage to be unhappy.

You do know you can live somewhere where you can actually SEE the sun most days of the year, right?

Of course, it hasn't really increased my productivity. I haven't been productive in, like, wait.... what's today? January?

Fresh snow is pretty, but it sucks after it melts and freezes and turns to ice and the color of road grime and the sun disappears for days at a time and why can't I love anything the world has rejected me.

Yeah it's pretty in December but you want to kill yourself come April.

We don't have universal healthcare in America so who knows how many people need drugs for depression. Of course a country with universal healthcare will show a higher rate of people on medication. Their needs are address.

Prescription medication isn't covered by our health care system, outside of a hospital setting.

I have heard that some chronic pain patients are treated with anti-depressants, so that could increase the usage, without it being a depression issue.

Weird.

The study TFA talk about excludes the US from it's Pharmaceuticals usage stats:

See page 103 (105 in the pdf including cover pages etc)

This, plus weed.

Antidepressants don't work for me. Weed and a state of moderate lushiatude do.

One can infer from this argument that living with socialized medicine makes you a pathetic drug using depressant

So my therapist says I should stop using alcohol to "medicate" my anxiety and depression but instead I should looks into medication.

Should I consider it hypocritical logic? Yes drinking is bad for me but is the medication and its possible side effects just as bad if not worse?

Also the drinking is more pin point, a couple before bedtime instead of feeling numb all day.

The world is nucking futz; sadness is a normal response to madness.
Depression might have a chemical component, but the emotional triggers have their roots in past experience.
Sometimes you have to drop out for a little while; if you need to work to survive, that can be really devastating.
SSRIs make you like a disconnected cork, floating on top of all the stuff you need to sink into in order to understand how you got there.

Are they counting beer and pot as antidepressants?

Well the medications are subsidizes, so they're generally less expensive.  But more importantly is access to the people who can prescribe said medication.

/They tried me on AD's for migraines.

True dat. But, of course, getting so drunk on wodka you take all your clothes off despite it being -45 degrees is probably not all that prudent, and if there is one things that Canadians are, it's prudent.

Or maybe it's prudish. I forget.

At any rate, there are Canadians who have never taken all of their clothes off, even to bathe.

Bob: Hello, Doctor Somerville, this is Bob, eh.
Dr. S.:  Good day, Bob. What can I do for you, eh?
Bob: I think Doug and I broke our legs playing hockey, eh?
Dr. S.: Sorry to hear that, eh, make an appointment to see me and I'll have a look at your legs.
Bob: Can't you look at them today, eh .
Dr. S.: Sorry, my flight for Florida leaves tonight, eh. I'm busy. I'll be back in March.
Bob: What should we do until then, eh?
Dr. S.: Do you have beer?
Bob: You know we do.
Dr. S.:  Well, self-medicate, eh. Or else go to Emergency at the Hospital if your legs are bothering you.
Bob: Thanks, Doc!
Dr. S.: No problem!

Self-medication. The reason why Canadian health insurance is so cheap

The reason why American health insurance is so expensive:  malpractice insurance (50%), other lawsuits (25%), miscellaneous costs of litigation (12%), inadequate medical care due to delays in seeing physicians because of lack of health insurance (2%), other (remainder).
