eyeq360: A bribe-free Olympics in Russia or anywhere else for that matter is about as likely as a soccer game completely devoid of questionable referee decisions and egregious examples of diving and histrionically excessive dramatics from players.  It just isn't going to happen.

Yeah right. These games are probably the most bribery full games ever. 51 billion for a freaking winter games. That's more than China's most expensive summer game.

Certainly puts the United States bribery history in winter games to shame. Russia: Oh, you bribed to get the games? Cute. In Russia we bribe EVERYONE, 30 billion dollars disappears like that! Silly Americans.

Think of it as the Russian equivalent of the Republican party courting the Moral Majority back in the Reagan years. Doctrinaire authoritarianism attracts doctrinaire authoritarianism.

This. If you took away the corruption there would be no functioning society left.

Sure feel superior Mr. corporations are people American. No bribery here thank goodness.

I'm not watching the Olympics.   I used to love them.   It seems like they are too commercial and you only see like 2% of the competitors anymore.

Then again I don't usually watch the superbowl either.

Actually it goes deeper than that. I'm looking for Putin to name a Czar ( although he may be smarter than that). The troubles in Turkey though do worry me. a Chechen war seems likely but it could be turned to Turkey Bush jr did it. You know what happened last time the Russians had Istanbul under siege in the 1800's? Putin's nationalism has really been worrying me as well as the ties to the Orthodox church.

Olympics are pretty terrible these days. Usually I stream them from overseas so I don't have to watch horrible human interest story after horrible human interest story that makes up 90% of NBC Olympic coverage. Where the only thing they don't cover is that actual events.

I'll give ya that I don't either and I can say I still catch news headlines of both of them. The Olympics were an interesting break from the soaps when I was visiting my G-mother in the summer.

At the Olympics? Are you kidding? A bunch of hot buff men wandering around throwing poles and showing off their gymnastic abilities? If I was there, I'd have to be getting laid every night to not explode.

/gay

It's the Winter Olympics. There will be no pole throwing at the Winter Olympics.

/keep your stick on the ice

Keep my stick where? Well, I suppose that would decrease the gay sex.

So what they're saying is if we get enough money together, Putin will cancel the Men's figure skating?  I'm in for $50 if that's the case.

a thousand times this.  I talked extensively with a London cabbie about this.  The locals are almost unanimous that the Games put money in the right pockets, but the local vendors for the most part get jack, shiat, and hassle.

What he said;

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that his government has nothing against gay people, as long as they leave kids alone, according to Reuters.
"There is no ban on non-traditional forms of sexual interaction between people. We have a ban on propaganda of homosexuality," Putin told a meeting with young volunteers preparing for the Games.
"We ban nothing, we aren't going after anyone, we have no responsibility for such contacts," Putin added. "People can feel free and at ease, but please leave the children in peace."

Got it?

New video claims responsibility for Volgograd attacks - and threatens Sochi Olympics

Interesting they threaten tourists coming to Sochi, A bit outside of the Chechens' motive to target non-Russians

As long as the Winter Olympics include ice dancing, 2 man luge,  and women's hockey, the Winter Olympics will never be gay-free.

Have they tried bribing people to not be gay? You know, the carrot instead of the stick.

Yes, but you should have seen what they did with the carrot.

You aren't familiar with "The Great Olympic Orgy" are you?

http://www.businessinsider.com/olympic-village-sex-party-2012-7

I wouldn't wanna miss that either.

2012's "Naked Lesbian Cross-Country Wrestling" was interesting at first; I lost interest after a few minutes.

I (honest to FSM) went to school w/ one of the fine young ladies of the US 2012 Olympic team (will NOT name names). I recall she was rumored to potentially go 'that way'. I'd be willing to shave a year off of my life to have gotten to see that in real life w/ her...

Shouldn't they be more concerned about those guys who want to blow things up making that couple hour drive from one of the other Black Sea/Caspian Sea states, like Chechnya, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan.... so on.
