TuteTibiImperes: Twist2005: I work on a farm during weekends and summers and in a classroom the rest of the time. I'm getting plenty of exercise between work and shooting hoops every evening.

I CAN'T farkING SLEEP.

It's taking absolutely ridiculous amounts of drugs to put me out for an hour or two...like 5 or six Zzquil and Advil PMs. I couldn't finish an internship because the daily 18hr migraines just made me want to die.

In addition, I've been known to get a little feisty under some kinds of medication. Like, "get in a fight with an IV stand (thank you, phenergan) and lose" feisty. It sounds like Ambien would be even worse.

Is there something I could be doing that doesn't involve knocking myself out with a field hockey stick?

Couple shots of whiskey?

That sounds like an option, thanks!!

I second Trazodone. It's super-cheap and works within 20 min. Add some melatonin and be sure to cover your eyes with a sleep mask. (The amount of light hitting your body can screw with your biological clock and put an end to a restful sleep cycle, especially if you go to sleep at a later hour than usual.)

You could try Benadryl if the whiskey doesn't do the trick. I occasionally have trouble getting to sleep, nothing like insomnia at all, and two generic Benadryl will get me a good 5-6 hours after about 30-40 minutes of taking the pills. They do dull my attention a bit, but not to the point of feeling at all like I'm a danger to myself or others.
Best of luck to you and all the other tired folks out there. Sleep deprivation is a torture technique for a reason.

Do remember that Benadryl starts out as a sedative, and rapidly becomes a stimulant.  So if you're getting really hyper on Benadryl, take less of it.   http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2009/01/treating_insomnia_with_less.ht m l#more

/And uh, 2 shots of vodka seems to do the trick for me.  2 shots, hit pillow, asleep in 30 minutes, wake up 6 hours later completely refreshed with no hangover.

Thanks for the tip, myerkev! I did not know Benadryl became a stimulant. Very important if you are using it for a sleep aid.

It, um, doesn't. Unless you have a paradoxical reaction, which is about 10% of the population when it comes to diphenhydramine. Then, yes, hyper and jittery. But if it knocks you out, you aren't one of the lucky one out of ten.

Most likely, the person you're talking to just metabolized it, and woke up. Benedryl doesn't have a long effect time once it's released in the system. The only reason it lasts as long as it does is because of the time release nature of the pills. When we would administer it via IV for allergic reactions, it was instantaneous drooling and snot bubbles from most people, but roused not long after so long as we didn't dose then again.
