Where's a chloroform rag when you need one.

No wonder, that needle is almost as thick as her arm.

My sister was much the same way when she was a teenager & had to have an injection or blood drawn. Even as a teen it took two people to give her an injection or draw blood.

Thankfully she's much better nowadays & doesn't freak out any longer.

Hopefully this girl will overcome her terror of needles when she gets older.

My arms are around the same size and getting needles is a painful, tedious process. My veins are small and they often have to use a butterfly needle and poke me multiple times before they get it to work.

Mind you, I don't freak out like an epileptic sheep, but I get where she's coming from.

It's sad, but some people really are terrified by such things, even though she might go out and play basketball and hurt herself much worse on a daily basis, that needle stick is just a big deal to some.

/The shriek is the worst when you are the provider
//and seriously, that wasn't that bad for a freak out

I was an old pro at that when I was 10 after a month of getting blood drawn during a hospital stay.  First visit to the family doctor after the hospital stay made me realize not all nurses are equal.  She made a big deal about holding my arm instead of doing her part, then didn't bandage properly and I started leaving a blood trail as I left the exam room.  I wasn't happy with her.

I did throw a fuss like that when I was 5 when they did the finger pricking.  I hate getting my finger pricked, and I feel sad for diabetics.  That has to truly suck.  I'll take an arm poke any day.

I feel for her. There's just something about needles. It's not the pain, it's not the blood, it's just the idea of the needle. I don't freak out, at least not externally, but I don't look at it when it's happening, either.

On the plus side, there's no danger that I'll ever become addicted to injectable drugs.

This !...  and I won't watch either... and if there is more than a second try, there is a different person doing it....

Want to get over fear of needles?  Get cancer and go through chemo.  They poke you so often that you start to not even notice.

2014-01-19 06:25:04 PM
I had lots and lots of allergy shots as a kid.  I did the tests twice - 40 different spots on my back as a skinny 5-year-old.

Then once they figured what I was allergic to, a shot in each arm three times a week.  After a year, they dropped that to twice a week. Then once a week, then every other, etc.  Oh, and a third shot every 2 months or so to see how the desensitization was going.  My mother had to call exactly 2 hours after I got the shot and report on how big the swelling in my arm got - golfball, lemon, etc.  After 7 years and approximately 800 shots, I was mostly cured of those childhood allergies.

tl;dr I'm no longer afraid of needles, and if I ever need an injection I can rate the nurse like Ruth Reichl critiquing the food at 21 or Jean-Georges.

C'mon baby, it's just a little prick.

2014-01-19 06:38:05 PM
Poor little girl.
When my Grave's disease first became apparent, they weren't sure if it was grave's or possibly thyroid cancer. So they kept jabbing needles in my neck to take samples. They finally had to take a core sample that involved using an ultrasound to guide the needle so it would hit nothing vital in the process. That sort of thing makes you utterly fearless about getting a bit of blood drawn.

Or get Type 1 Diabetes, and have to inject yourself multiple times every day for the rest of your life to supply your life sustaining insulin, and draw blood from your fingers multiple times every day for the rest of your life to determine how much life sustaining insulin you require at that moment.

Cancer treatment?  There's at least an end to that, one way or the other.

The first time I gave blood for a blood drive, I let a girl go ahead of me in line.  The tech put the needle through the vein the first time, and hit an artery the second.  Needless to say, I chose wisely.

My first girlfriend's arms looked like that until she turned 30 or so and went on lithium for a while.  There's a prom pic of us where they look like two pale white sticks wrapped around me.

One comment there:

My Story!

My Name is Rick Thomas age 48 Years old I am what you call a Dangerous Severe Needle Phobic witch is a Real Medical Condition!  for the past 48 Years I have never had a vaccination or Blood work or any Needle procedures Ever Done on me.  Back in 1976 I was on Vacation in Wisconsin with a severe Ear Infection and I was taken to a local doctor in town but I had no idea this Doctor was going to Give me a Shot of Penicillin with a 2 inch Needle and Totally got Violent and very angry and was thrown to the Ground by 4 Doctors and I threw them in the Air against the wall and Ran the Hell out of there the Doctor and Nurses  from what I was told got Hurt with my Temper! so for the past 48 years I live in Fear and Anger because I Refuse to Ever have a Needle for any Reason even if I am Dying! I Have No Medical insurance and NEVER WILL!!! I Never go to clinics or Hospital and stay away like the plague! I know this might sound extreme but this is my life and I will not Except being a Lab Rat for anyone and I live my life in fear Every day.  I have never been so Angry to see Children go through Hell of Vaccinations These Things are very Painful and your Hurting Children and adults everyone has Rights including children but if the Medical field Keeps Treating patients in this manner More and more people will avoid medical care and stay far away. This past week I had a encounter at a local Walgreens of a woman who walked up to me and grabbed me by the arm and I went into full rage telling her to f off keep that crap away from me. I mean what I say I will Never Ever let Anyone stick me with a Needle because they will be very very sorry they tried

Advise For Adults & children.

1. Never Hold or force anyone to take a Needle They Have Needle phobia
2. if you see a person who has this condition Refuse to treat them and have them seek Help
3. Children will soon have Rights to refuse Needles and parents will no longer be able to force this on them. I am working on this goal
4. More and more Family's are Refusing Vaccinations and that's a good thing Never Refuse to treat patients because there not vaccinated

I Understand Hospitals need to care for patients but this subject Has Bothered me for the past 48 years and there is no need for the neglect of patients living with this fear and for the medical field to ignore and force this on people!

Was kind've me as a little kid with my pediatrician, not gonna lie. :P

As it is now, I have no problem with needles and injections, but when it comes to blood tests unless I'm lying down I'll end up claustrophobic, sweating, and passing out. Happened with something as simple as a finger prick a few months ago and I wasn't freaking out I was just sitting there la dee dah'ing. Pissed me off :P Guess I'm a big pansy =D

Yeah - as annoying as the kid is, she does have a phobia, and is a teenager, so not like she has a lot of life experience to fall back on to say 'This won't kill me - but the Mom is an ass of the highest caliber.  She's like, a 7 on the Gosslin scale of douchemom.
