Not sure why people think Californians don't have guns. We have coyotes, bears, mountain lions and other car drivers. Additionally, I have personally observed people throwing popcorn at others in theaters.

// It's awful out here. Now I'm all upset and need to walk three blocks to the beach to clear my head.

A 100-pound, female mountain lion wandered out of the Santa Monica Mountains and into densely populated downtown Santa Monica today -- an area occupied by a large number of entertainment production companies -- where it was eventually killed by local police.

The animal startled a janitor as it trotted down the boutique-and-cafe-lined Arizona Ave. at 6 a.m. this morning, and was later chased by Santa Monica Police into the courtyard of a complex located at 1227 2nd St. -- a glass office building that houses a dance studio and a continuing education college for seniors, among other things.

Police cordoned off the street while they waited for Fish and Game wardens to arrive on the scene. News helicopters circled above as the two agencies worked together to tranquilize and contain the lion. Wardens attempted to shoot the animal with a tranquilizer dart, but when its effects failed to take hold, they used pepper-spray projectiles and even a Fire Department hose to keep it from escaping, according to Capt. Daniel Sforza of California Dept. of Fish and Game..

KTLA reporter Eric Spillman tweeted from the scene that it was a Santa Monica Police officer who fired the shots that killed the lion after it was deemed too great a public risk. It was an extreme measure that was nonetheless unavoidable, according to Andrew Hughan, public information officer for the state Fish and Game Department.

Mudslides? Where is California getting rain? We're about dry as a bone from SD up to SF.

Carry bear spray when out and about in the woods.  Especially in the Sierras. 2 summers ago I was camping out near Castle Peak in northern CA and I had a mtn lion creep up on me while I was sitting by my campfire. They are incredibly stealthy, I'm not shiatting you this thing was 4-5 feet away from me when I turned and saw it.  Luckily I had my bear spray right next to me!  As I reached for the spray, the mtn lion was taking another step closer and I sprayed it, no doubt, just in time.  To any of you northern cali farkers who are into the outdoors(do I hear crickets?) carry the frickin bear spray when in the wilds!

Also, I might note that it had a cub with it as evidenced by at least 4 different sized paw prints.  Came to find out I was camping near a mtn lion den!  Anybody out there know where I can look up known denning activity for a particular area?  Seems like good information to make people aware of...

ObliqueAsymptote: Chihuahua mix outside at 2 AM?? Even after discovering a mountain lion had taken their neighbor's boxer at 3 AM on a previous night?

Murderous, negligent shiat for brain farks.

THIS
Dogs are social animals, they need to be with their 'pack' significant portions of the day for their mental well being. They should be inside with you at night.

lenfromak: yousaywut: If a mountain lion attacks a person, immediately call 911.

When seconds count, the police will be there in minutes.

If you call 911 they can send an ambulance and track your phone so you don't end up fighting it off only to bleed to death over the next several hours.

Somacandra: When I worked on contract with the Nature Conservancy doing vegetation surveys in OK, my partner and I encountered a mountain lion running concentrically smaller circles around us during a late summer afternoon. I insisted we get in the car and head back to the base cabin.

enry: You don't need to outrun the mountain lion. You need to outrun your friend.

Exactly, so make sure your friends are fat.

Mountain Lions are what, like 50-60 kg?
Pft, bring it. Its like fighting a ferocious twelve year old with tiny knives. It will hurt me, it might fark me up, but I'm a bigger predator and I will tell it with fists, teeth and an axe.

You can't kill a mountain lion! PETA and other animal groups say so.Not to mention the idiots in the Peoples Republic of California legislature.

Personally, I prefer rape.  Mountain lions hate being raped.  It keeps them away.
Try it next time.

The Sheriff's deputy comes to the gate: "We've had reports of a mountain lion in the area, if you see it just shoot it and call us in the morning".

ForTheSakeOfArgument: Also, I might note that it had a cub with it as evidenced by at least 4 different sized paw prints.  Came to find out I was camping near a mtn lion den!  Anybody out there know where I can look up known denning activity for a particular area?  Seems like good information to make people aware of...

Lets start with they don't really use dens. They prefer thick brush or rock outcrops as places to sleep and raise cubs. A small cave is to accessible by things like coyotes and bears and they move around a good bit.

B) Most mountain lions that attack people are small males that have just left mom. They go off to set up a territory of their own and sometimes travel 400 miles from where they grew up so where they are raising cubs is not that useful.

C) The only people that know where mountain lion's are raising kittens are biologists with radio collars on them and I see little motivation for them to release that information to the public. The only time I know of a biologist telling the police about where a mountain lion was when a young male left his mom in the black hills and relocated to a suberb in Indiana.

D) There is a fun story about a mountain lion biologist who ended up spraying himself in the face with bear mace in his haste and screamed so loud that he scared off the mountain lion.

E) Often had nightly walks in one of the largest populations in the US. Never have had a problem. They do not typically see adults as food, kids are seen as a delicacy though.

So have we done the "I don't have to outrun the mountain lion, I just have to outrun you" thing yet?

Yes?

Cool.

You don't need to be the fastest. You just need to be a little faster than the slowest.
