Not from me. I want to ban the instigator penalty so the idiots who do the Cheap Shots and REALLY hurt people can get what's coming to them.

2014-01-19 02:22:49 AM
Going batshiat because you were whacked with a stick, or worse, is one thing.

But flying off the handle because someone legitimately beat you and scored a goal seems pretty childish.

In my experience with athletes from a variety of sports, besides soccer goalkeepers, hockey goalkeepers are some the oddest, most superstitious, least socially adept people in the world.  They border the fine line between crazy-insane and insane-genius.

As you can tell in the video.

2014-01-19 02:27:20 AM
Every time I see that video of Roy sending his brat to beat up the other teams goalie I wonder why the ref stopped the other player from pulling him off.

/little turd deserved to get filled in for that shiat

I don't think we need to ban anything in this case, but damn.  There has certainly been too much hockey in fights lately.

Very fitting it ended with Hextall. That guy was pissed off his entire career

This. Is. Hockey.

You have skill, you have finesse. You have bruises.

Every game is hard fought and no one gives up.

No doubt. There needs to be more Goalies like him. Most goalies are batshiat insane but Hexxy was on a whole other level between the pipes. Loved watching him play win or lose

Absolutely it was never a dull moment, if it was 5-0 or 0-5 he was on point and in the game. First time I saw himm scouting is when I actually knew he was on another plane. Took his lumps as a gaolie and left it there, as a person he is as intelligent as it comes

That would have been PPV worthy if both could be in their prime at the same time.

Exactly..  His only weakness was he let that anger get to his goaltending.. Most coaches figured out by the end of his career that if you annoy him he's easier to score on.  He was a great team leader though and they always rallied around him..   I'm glad he's back with the Flyers

Speaking of which.. What a turn around season we're having! Second place in the Metropolitan! (God I hate that division name)

I blame more fighting in recent years, albeit nothing like it was in the 50-80s , due to one thing- the visor and poor coaching from the youth level up. Once they had the helmets and the visor ( in youth hockey we had the cage or full face shield ) more and more farkwads started getting their sticks up, right in a players face. And did the youth hockey orgs address the issue as a whole ? no. So coaches stopped teaching keep yer damn stick on the ice because there might be a puck right THERE, right NOW. Kids grow, and still- nobody talks about the f word high sticking. Eventually, players get sick of that, or the Bowman style of clutch and grab, and throw a punch.
I dont like the instigator penalty, as its a puss out because gary bettman is an asshole. I love the game, and always will and I understand that once in a while guys will fight. I never did as when I played- one punch = kicked out. I found ways to get my frustrations out on others with a nice hard legal check .
But look- unless some guy is using his stick to beat on another player, or drive his head into the boards or the pipes- its fine. For non players who read this- its not easy to box while balancing on steel blades, but many have mastered the art. See films from the 50s - early 90's .

thats my two pence. Go Kings and ( i know ) go Leafs .

I can't believe the praise in here for Hextall and Billy Smith.  Yeah, slashing a forward who's not looking in your direction while you're wearing more armor than the guy that trains attack dogs.  Real brave, macho man.

They were both cowardly cheap-shot artists.

You're totally right except for the part where you're totally wrong. The number of fights has been pretty steadily dropping for a while now.

Some of those goalies had legit beefs (getting run into), while others were just griping because sticking their faces into the other players' butts didn't get them the call they wanted (Brodeur did this a LOT). Some of those slashes are just plain inexcusable - a two-hander with a goalie stick could end somebody's career.

Last night, the Kings kept plowing into Howard all night, and he finally had enough, getting chippy out there. In the end, he blanked them on the skills competition in OT, and got the last laugh.

Yeah, LaPointe took a lot of crotch shots, but Holmstrom took even more... maybe testament to how much he got into goalie's heads. I think I remember him commenting in an interview about the need to have good protection, but lamenting there was no way to adequately protect everything.

Yeah I was really skeptical when Berube took over, but I was willing to give it a go and we as fans have been paid off in spades. The intensity is really there now unlike the previous 40 games. The question is, have we hit a ceiling with this team? Is this as good as it gets? I kinda think so.

Yeah, the name (metro) just sucks. WTF?

Didn't watch it but I assume Hextall's chop on Nilsson in the 87 (?) playoffs is there?

The one I've always wanted to see, which sadly never happened, is Patrick Roy beating the ever loving shiat out of Mario Tremblay.

/Hate Mario Tremblay.
//Over rated as a player and should never have been behind the Montreal bench unless he was sweeping the floor.
//Not even qualified to coach ringette.

Look, Detroit never, NEVER, interferes with the goaltender.  They just skate near the crease and the netminder jumps in front of them for some reason.
