It's like the Chinese version of Obamascare. What's next forced abortions of male Christian babies?

I'm sure evacuating all the mucus from your nose, one finger shutting a nostril, will still be perfectly acceptable on the street.

2014-01-18 08:43:34 PM
Yeah. Because smoking is the most of their air problems.

So that's what's been causing all that pollution in Beijing!!! Now they can turn their coal burning plants and gas guzzlers, and finally breathe easy.
Eh, China's version of healthcare for all that smog would probably be this and give everyone generic knockoffs of Breathe Right strips.

First they have to stop parents from allowing their kids to use sidewalks as restrooms.

When China get its sh!at together and decides to do something....

I don't doubt they'll knock this on the head. Recently there's been a crack down on bribery and officials are even too scared to accept a moon cake as a gift. I was mighty impresses and surprised.

Erm. Unless this has since been proved to be bunkum.

// thinkin' about the whiny sh!at-flinging biatch fest when NY banned smoking

Well, to be fair it supposedly works everywhere else something similar is tried. Want to do something about gun violence? Ban those dastardly assault weapons that are used in like .000001% of gun crimes. Want to do something about cocaine usage? Get rid of the little coffee stirring spoons at McDonalds. Want to do something about obesity? Get rid of the tasty coconut oil used to pop popcorn at movie theatres.

Out of 350 million smokers only 1 million a year die from smoking?  Those seem like fairly good odds.

The image of the squatting asian that's smoking is, for some reason, embedded in my memory.  The added  crapping part made me howl with laughter!
Good jerb, random internet person!
This is why I read comment threads.

That helps filter the air as it grabs particulates on it's trajectory.

Funny, China.
Funny.

Not. Gonna. Happen.

I pick up the newspaper in front of my hotel room in Shanghai and start flipping thru it. One of the articles is about just how difficult they are finding it in stopping people from public smoking.

....in the damn hospitals.

It's not about quality of life. It's about quality of life on paper. They want to boost their rankings in international surveys of healthiest countries. And banning smoking is a good way to do that. It's probably just a first step toward an outright ban.

2014-01-18 11:14:36 PM
Meh, this didn't work before in Beijing, I can't see it working this time, let alone in the shiatholes down the country.

Just nuke em! That's the only way to be sure.

On a more serious note has there ever been anything positive ever said about China? The anti Chinese sentiment in the US is actually quite concerning.
If Obama comes on TV and says he will launch nukes at China tomorrow I quite sure a vast majority of Americans would actually support his decision.

It was pretty hilarious when Reagan did it.

The world today seems absolutely crackers,
With nuclear bombs to blow us all sky high.
There's fools and idiots sitting on the trigger.
It's depressing and it's senseless, and that's why...
I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're always friendly, and they're ready to please.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
There's nine hundred million of them in the world today.
You'd better learn to like them; that's what I say.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They come from a long way overseas,
But they're cute and they're cuddly, and they're ready to please.

I like Chinese food.
The waiters never are rude.
Think of the many things they've done to impress.
There's Maoism, Taoism, I Ching, and Chess.

So I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
I like their tiny little trees,
Their Zen, their ping-pong, their yin, and yang-ese.

I like Chinese thought,
The wisdom that Confucious taught.
If Darwin is anything to shout about,
The Chinese will survive us all without any doubt.

So, I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're wise and they're witty, and they're ready to please.

All together.

[verse in Chinese]
Wo ai zhongguo ren. (I like Chinese.)
Wo ai zhongguo ren. (I like Chinese.)
Wo ai zhongguo ren. (I like Chinese.)
Ni hao ma; ni hao ma; ni hao ma; zaijien! (How are you; how are you; how are you; goodbye!)

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
Their food is guaranteed to please,
A fourteen, a seven, a nine, and lychees.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
I like their tiny little trees,
Their Zen, their ping-pong, their yin, and yang-ese.

I like Chinese.
I like Chinese.
They only come up to your knees...

They should start with those first.  Stepping around the goobers on the pavement is disgusting. Smoking is less obnoxious.

Me Chinese
It's no joke
You can't tell me
where to smoke.

2014-01-19 02:47:00 AM
The Chinese are pretty hard core smokers so there's no way the government are gonna make an all out ban stick without resorting to seriously draconian tactics.

Their best bet to pick smaller battles they can win like banning smoking in restaurants and hospitals first.

Also they need to start taking industrial pollution more seriously which is to say "at all".

2014-01-19 03:29:17 AM
I suspect this is just a lame attempt by the Chinese government to prevent Tibetan monk immolation.

2014-01-19 05:53:46 AM
All that pollution is for Chinas new population control plan.

The early deaths and infertility caused by all that smog will do a great job at lowering their numbers.

China is 350 million people living a vastly improving life style and about a billion doing subsistence farming while living in a poverty in an old school 3rd world dictatorship. The luck ones tend to be second generation of the family of military or party members.  China used to fund its military entirely from foreign trade so those pale green "China Shipping" containers full of Wal-Mart goods were property of the Chinese Army until they reorganized so it isn't anymore (according to their army).

The only taxes the poor Chinese citizen pays is tobacco tax.  The problem is that the military owns all of the tobacco production, distribution and importation business in the country.  I'm guessing the government's cut of the taxes is not longer useful for them.  This will not end well.

Aussie Universities have been using smoking status of Chinese students to award preferences when picking which students they let in.  In some fields they find the smokers get upset with the local rules and go home while still paying the Uni.

All the pollution in China is caused by tea partiers in the US.

At least that's what I learned on Fark.

2014-01-19 11:59:46 AM
Given a population of that size and carry capacity of the land, I would think they would be encouraging smoking.......like maybe giving sampler packs right out of the birth canal.
