It's a 777 to be exact, but it is still an incredible bit of work. There's several time-lapse videos on his youtube page.

/doing the forward fuselage curve on a 747 with cardboard... that would be pretty freaking cool, though...

I hope this guy is single and childless.  What an extraordinary waste of time.

It'll never fly if he doesn't make it some wings.

Just sayin.

Holy shiat.

That's a lot of detail. Someone needs to hook this guy up with Games Workshop...

Some reason this reminds me of those old men who assemble boats in bottles.

I know, right?  Why can't he just use Fark and play Call of Duty like the rest of us?

My crease and fold paper planes are childs play. I never pretended otherwise.

Obviously a terrorist plotting terrifying terror, why else would he build a model of a plane? Sent him to Guantanamo asap.

Joke's on me. I thought a Manila folder was a Filipino contortionist.

2014-01-18 09:43:26 PM
Why manila folders? Wouldn't it be easier and waaaay cheaper just to buy bulk card stock of the desired thickness? The flickr is not forthcoming on these details.

Anyway, nice work, guy. Reminds me of the scale locomotive models that rail enthusiasts would make out of cardboard and straight pins back in the 50s.

2014-01-18 09:44:41 PM
Wow. I'm glad my asperger's isn't that bad. I also really hope he used archival quality manila folders.

When his classes at Vassar took up too much time-he actually stopped work on the 777 for two years because of college-Iaconi-Stewart dropped out. "I'm fortunate to have parents willing to give me a fair amount of latitude,"

I don't even know what to say to this. fark working or learning something. Make paper planes.

That airplane is nothing. You should see his girlfriend!

"Your girlfriend is from Manila?" "No! She's made from Manila!"

Pfft. I built a particle accelerator out of snot, buggers and dingleberries.

Yeah because their crack design team, whose sole design aesthetic seems to be "MOAR PURITY SEELZ, FOR THUH EMPRAAAAH!", need a guy who can make airliners out of paper.  I bet he could do a mean Thunderhawk gunship for less than the cost of the Forge World model though.  The bolter turrets would be twin-linked and everything.

theorellior: Why manila folders? Wouldn't it be easier and waaaay cheaper just to buy bulk card stock of the desired thickness?

That exact weight of card may not be readily available except as folders.  Don't want it too thick (hard to work) or too thin (weak) after all.

I never thought I'd read about paper engineers on FARK. I am impressed.

If he sells that plan at the right art gallery he could easily make a good $10,000 or more. Mind, he could make twice that much working for two years at a part time minimum wage job.

There. fixed--those look to be new folders.

As a model maker myself, I can really appreciate that kind of commitment.    However, my longest project took about six months to build a super detailed 1/350 scale USS Missouri.   Five years would drive me insane!

Hah! Funny/notFunny.
Did not get a kick out of your comment as that I flew twice on the 777 in a night flight in economy seats on trips that lasted over 12 hours.

Some dude over at Large Scale Planes is building a 1/35th destroyer. It's been taking a while.

Okay, stay with me here: Paper Warhammer.

You send your Marines into battle in their Rhino. Your opponent rolls sixes, you don't. BOOM. He grabs your model and crumples it up and tosses it over his shoulder.

You don't care because it was $5.00 for your whole army, which won't even fit on the table. After a few games, you buy another ream of vehicles and keep going.

Yup, completely awesome.  Takes an incredible amount of skill, attention-to-detail, and dedication to do this.

But I'm sure other farkers are making much more productive use of their time, sitting around swilling cheap beer

Yeah, because if he had a family he should be an automatic teller machine 24/7/365. How dare he have any other interest encroaching on family earning time?

There's nothing strange about this guy building a model airplane. It's a hobby. Lots of people build models.
