The whole time I worked in academic travel, this was my greatest nightmare. We had a ship grounded on a river cruise, another captured by pirates, a seriously scary mess of bad seas, a trip to China during the 9/11 aftermath, another trip to China and Tibet when the riots in Tibet caused China to lock down that area, a trip to Mumbai right when then terrorists did their thing, a traveler (not one of ours) who broke a leg on the Trans Siberian railroad, one of our travelers who had a moment of dementia in Tahiti and missed the boat--literally, but the entire time, I knew an outbreak of norovirus would really ruin us.

Luckily, all of our trips were 4-5 stars and the staff on those ships and tours (mostly Filipino, the rock stars of travel industry) were very careful. We never had an episode of gastrointestinal distress. Not one.

You get what you pay for...

Unobtanium: I have been on one cruise in my life. Meh. Some people love them.

Many years ago, I dated a CDC microbiologist. She would bring home the MMWR, the Morbitity and Mortality Weekly Report. It was unusual to have one WITHOUT a cruise ship illness outbreak.

I have been on one cruise (Carnival - West Caribbean ) and one resort (Cuba - Guardalavaca). I honestly don't know which I'd rather do the next time I have an opportunity to go vacation.

Cruise was nice as a couple, and you basically get a sampler pack of different places to visit. Food and entertainment was great.

Resort was nice to relax by the pool and beach and meet new people. Made quite a few new friends in the week several of whom I've hung out with since we've all been back home (helped it was off season and you really did run into the same people multiple times a day). All you can drink is overrated when it's sugary crap and the food was plain but tasty enough.

Meanwhile one of the Elementary schools in the Portland school district has over a hundred students sick with the norovirus.

Now THIS is just odious news:
Another ill-fated "poop cruise".
It's truly a pity
When touring turns shiatty-
RC currently has business blues.

8 out of 3000+ not really a bad average. Unless your one of the eight.
