WTFDYW: I see there is a generation of assholes here that know nothing about B.G., only what they remember about the hucksters of the 80's forward. I'm not religious AT ALL, but this man has not done any harm.

You're obviously not Vietnamese or Cambodian. Sure, Graham didn't personally drop bombs, but he sure as hell supported the Vietnam War and the bombing of Cambodia.

If a preacher deserves death for preaching what you consider hate, what would a President that knowingly drone attacks civilians deserve?

What a stunning display of hatefulness and ignorance all in one place.

Lenny_da_Hog: nightbringerggz: Wow, the ignorance and bigotry that's on display in this thread is pretty amazing.  Sure he made some bone-headed blunders, but on the whole he was rather earnest in his faith and his attempts to make the world a better place.  Whether you agree with his faith or not, he's done nothing to deserve the hatred displayed in this thread.

All of the meanest, cruelest people I encountered in my lifetime flocked to Billy Graham crusades when they came to town.

I'm sorry that was your experience, and I know some people I don't particularly care for who also flocked to his crusades.  I also know of some wonderful people who've spent their entire lives simply trying to help others who attended every event they could where Bill Graham would be speaking.

None of that is relevant to the fact that the man himself, though flawed and often mistaken, spent his life trying to do good.  That he managed to accomplish quite a bit of a good.  And that as he lies dying and suffering from Parkinson's, he doesn't deserve the level of vitriol encountered in this thread.

Pretty meh about BG. If he's really as sick as they say I can only hope that he passes with a minimal amount of pain, no less than I'd wish for 99.99% of the people on this planet.

His kid, otoh, seems like a bit of a douche.

I do have a list of various prosperity gospel types like Peter Poppoff, Benny Hinn, Creflo Dollar and the like who can and should die slowly and in agonizing pain but BG is not on that list.

May God bless your soul. I'm sure you and your dad missed a lot of ........ NOTHING. Yeah. TV sucked back then. Except for Carole Burnette, All In The Family, etc. etc..........

Yes. I got tired of it also after the first night. But I never hated on the man for it. He gave people a sense of hope. For many people, a sense of hope is what it takes to get them over the hump even ifthey don't get all religious and stuff. It gave them hope and help.

jmayson: Stone Meadow: If he "is ready to go to Heaven" and certain of his destination, why would he need any prayers?

Because it's a popularity contest. The more people you get to pray for you, the higher odds of getting what you want from God.

So, what I'm hearing is that he's an American Idol.

That's because he was the only famous evangelist around for a long time. And a lot of religious people are just plain evil. They were bound to intersect sometimes.

hardinparamedic: Son of Thunder: Second, "scam" requires that Graham know that his message was not true. I have yet to see proof of that. As far as I can see, he sincerely believes what he told people, and did his best to be a good person as he understood it. So that's what it boils down to: you are wishing suffering and misery on someone because that someone was (in your eyes) incorrect. I hope that I never be that small, petty, and hateful.

Many terrible people throughout history have believed their message was true. That doesn't make them any less noble or worthy of praise for their actions.

It's not about him being "incorrect", because he wasn't even wrong to begin with. He is a frothing at the mouth, anti-semetic, anti-catholic, right-winged bigot who is the exemplary of the modern day evangelical pharisee.

Maybe he will find redemption in his last days of life, or renounce all the spectacular derp which he is well known for. I might have some respect for him then.

You clearly don't know the first thing about the man. Rarely have I seen so pure an example of a person being blinded by their hatred.

Billy Graham isn't a bigot, he marched arm in arm with Martin Luther King and was okay with gays being ordained back in the 1970's.

Methinks some of y'all got your shysters confused. Say it with me: "Billy Graham is not Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson, or Jerry Falwell.

I do not, however, make the same distinction regarding his son and the current crop of shysters, jokers, conmen, thieves, and criminals professing to be acting in the name of "GAWD." I don't know what "GAWD" they're talking about (except the one called the almighty dollar maybe), but they're lucky the God I know isn't about farting lightning bolts and sending people to eternal damnation for shiats and giggles.

And you call yourself a theologian. Pascal's wager is fallacy heaped atop fallacy, with a delicious topping of hypocrisy.

Actually, Pascal's Wager is not for the non-Christian.  It is actually for the Christian who is faced with doubt.  We will be hypocritical and liars if we say that we do not doubt.  It is just a device to remind ourselves that we despite our doubts, God will see us through this, and if we have to go through the void, it is a cold comfort that we will feel nothing.  It is not meant to be used as an apologetic method.  And I look at the mirror and see a worthless punk who wonders if she is feeling lucky today.

Well, of all the mega tv evangelists out there, he was probably one of the least scumbaggiest. He's certainly no Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell.

He's certainly no saint, but he's also not a complete shiathead like (most) of the rest of 'em.

You can dress it up however you like, but Pascal's wager is a laughably illogical argument that no modern, community-college philosophy professor would tolerate from a student. Here's a good debunking of it.

My life is awesome. I have a wonderful family, a job which makes a real difference in people's lives, and I don't scam them out of their life savings while convincing them that I'm the earthly word of Jesus Christ, and encouraging horrific acts out of people who are supposed to be "christ-like"

First, despite your internet claims to be such a paragon, I'm pretty sure that, if I dug into your life with half the eagerness of the Graham haters, you wouldn't come out smelling like roses.

Second, "scam" requires that Graham know that his message was not true. I have yet to see proof of that. Was actually quoting both to point out the truth in both posts. To have quoted posts saying that Billy Graham is an evil shyster bigot conman criminal would have required quoting 95% of the thread. Sorry for any confusion. I blame the wine. ;)

Holy shiat, you made a somewhat valid point.

It's also flawed because it assumes if God exists, it's the Christian one.

What is the evidence to backup these claims that BG was a bigot, antisemite, or scammer?

Any cites?
I am an agnostic, but never really heard much dirt on this particular individual.
