Noo, Subtard, the kid in the article was simply the one who wrote the malware. It even says in the article that they don't necessarily suspect him of making the attacks directly.

It's a New York Post article. The same people that gave us the Boston marathon bomber suspects that were just random brown guys with backpacks a few readers circled in photos.

/ in other words, it's the farkin' New York Post.

He created and sold/distributed software with no purpose other than illegal activities.
If I sell an illegal assault gun to a criminal and he kills somebody, I would expect the law is going to be knocking on my door.
Direct or indirect, without him the crime would not have taken place.

Wait, wasn't BlackPOS written almost 10 years ago?

I don't believe there is such a thing as illegal software (yet, knock on wood).

Developing a hack to steal credit card info and selling it at a discount for a split of the take sounds like criminal activity to me.

"There is no such thing as protected information...only unmotivated hackers." - friend of mine who is a software engineer

Whoever did it literally probably did it for fun.  I am positive if their motive was simply money, there are over a million easier ways to get that if you have the talent this person (or group) had.

You know, if it was a hack by the Russian Mafia or some lucky Nigerian then I could handle that. Everyone wants to make a buck.

But some stubble-headed like punkass doing it just to rustle the world's jimmies? That's just wrong!

Wait'll he takes it up the wazoo in a Russian prison. Then WE ALL will get to have loads of lulz.

[He pretended to be a "bad actor" seeking to acquire BlackPOS, which was originally called Kaptoxa, Russian slang for potato.]
A black POS potato?  Whut?

And now for something completely different, here's a picture of one of my favorite Russian sauces that goes well with fried fish.  It's named in a peculiar Russian slang and called only "taptap"

I don't know how you want to define "software", but certainly a lot of pedophiles have (rightfully) gone to jail for possessing nothing more than digital files (pictures and video). I wouldn't count on your belief that there is no such thing as illegal software.

Yes, but you can side-step the export restrictions by publishing the source code as a book. Then it's a First Amendment issue.

It seems fairly unenforceable nowadays anyway. I mean, strong crypto is out... And if you encrypt the strong-crypto binaries before sending them overseas, who will know?
