So they make a sign that is acknowledged as a gang sign, the school acts within policy and investigates, then apologizes and kisses ass.. but they are still dirty racists??

Geez, What am I thinking?? they should totally allow suspected gang related activity in school without question...

I think you missed the part where it isn't a gang sign. I'm also thinking you don't watch a lot of basketball.

Somehow A cop from Sheboygan is not the most reliable expert on gang activity.

I can see why they thought it was at least worth looking into. Plus if you're a black student in a primarily white school, drawing attention to yourself in this manner might be seen by some as stupid.

/if you don't want to be stereotyped, don't act like a stereotype.

I wonder if there is an actual sign for 'gang' in international sign language.  So it's a literal gang sign but not really a gang-gang sign. I don't know where I am going with this.

This is my kids' school.  Sheboygan Falls is outside of Sheboygan, and *much* less racially diverse.  I am not exaggerating when I say the school is probably over 99% white.  A lot of the parents and some of the kids grew up on farms, and they're probably wigging out at the mere presence of black faces in their news.

OTOH, I think making hand gestures for a posed picture is kind of tacky.

/not from around here

2014-01-18 09:39:58 AM
Yeah, totally not gang-related at all.

The county government should send the entire Sheboygan Falls police department, along with the school board, on a week-long fact-finding mission to South Central L.A.

A walking tour of Compton oughta give them an idea of what gang activity is.

Mugato: Hand gestures are a suspension worthy offense? Jesus.

If a "gun shaped pastry" or a drawing of a gun is  why not hand gestures?

Remember home schooling is bad and the only option should be these fine government facilities run by these high caliber (ooops, firearm/gun terminology sorry) unionized government employees.

Thank you Ricardo the Romero for making the statement of which has the obviousness. The people who did the thinking of this as the gang signs are also those upon which will be at the cross burning and picnicking event on the evening of this. LAUGHTER OL of course I am doing the referencing to the Ku Klacks Kiln.

BTW, the suspension was reversed by the administration prior to the game.  Sheboygan Falls lost 78-39.

2014-01-18 09:44:18 AM
As someone who used to work with gang kids and doesn't watch pro basketball, I would've had questions about the hand signs as well. However, I would've pulled the boys aside and talked to them about it as opposed to just suspending them because.

20+ years ago I used to run the scoreboard at my high school. Our division did have a three point rule, and if a shot went in from anywhere near the line the ref used a hand signal to indicate which side of the line the shooter was on, since we couldn't always see past traffic on the court. The refs used the normal "V" sign for a 2 point basket and the sign on the left in the picture accompanying TFA, rather than the sign in your picture, for a 3 pointer, since it was easier for the scorekeepers to tell the difference at a glance.

"The sign made by Jordan Jackson (on the far left side of the photo) is also commonly used by NBA players, such as James Harden, Lebron James and Brandon Jennings, after making a 3-point shot," Pederson wrote."

www.rawstory.com

And the sign made by the guy on the right is commonly used to suggest you suck a dick.  And the middle guy is doing some kind of double gun thing, big deal.

After reading the article I was initially in full agreement with the ACLU that an horrible injustice had been done and that the players should be immediately reinstated but after I looked at the image again I am not so sure.  There is nothing in any of those hand gestures that looks even remotely like a three.  The guy on the right is making no hand gestures that I can see.  The guy in the middle is clearly gesturing but I see two twos or a four, or a set of guns.  I cant really know what the gesture meant but it sure as hell isn't a three.  I cant tell what gesture of the dude on the left could possibly mean but I sure don't see any threes.  Any normal rational person who wants to convey a three with a hand gesture is going to do it as shown in Abhorrent1's post above.  I don't know the intent of their gestures and am therefore inclined to trust the cops on this one.

Sheboygan sounds like one of those towns that still has a 19th-century law on the books banning black people from walking the streets after dark, but never got around to repealing it because it never comes up.

Man, I remember when you actually had to DO something to piss off folks. Listen to rock music, smoke the pot, do drugs, stay out at all hours... These days, all kids gotta do is get their pictures in the paper and they in a gang.
If these kids keep getting everything just handed to them like this, they're gonna grow up to be entitled assholes.

That's the strange thing about racism. You and I see their expressions, and think, "Hey, happy kids" and move on without a second thought.

Racists look at their expressions and see, "WE'RE COMING TO SELL CRACK TO YOUR WHITE DAUGHTERS SO WE CAN RAPE THEM RAAAAAPE THEM" and break out the (figurative) noose.

I live in an old Sundown town. The local "conservatives" are still pretty irritated at the laws that banned lynching and allowed "them colored folks to vote like they wuzz normal people" even though all the old Klan (the largest west of the Mississippi River) was "officially" disbanded back in the late 1960s.

Wait, these kids are not even making the SAME sign, much less anything that resembles a three. Both of these signs are what "every" kid plus Lebron throws up? Can someone post a pic of that? IM not saying they are gang signs, I'm just saying they BOTH can't be the same innocent sign

/ this headline is racist and mean spirited. Just sayin.
