Until he stops using all petroleum-based products (including those in his new MP3 player, which he says "frees the music"), yeah - he can STFU.  ompared to US electrical plants, the oil sands are veritable green enterprises.

But, you'll never be unpopular talking smack about Fort Mac.  Everybody has a girlfriend who heard from her brother that his buddy's sister's roommate's cousin worked up there in Fort Mac for a year and it SUCKED.  Jen says that Ryan says Courtney says Emily says Jared told her the grapes in Fort Mac are so damn sour, you can't pay him enough to eat them.

I'll always find it entertaining the extreme amount of bias people show against it, they'll go to such extremes to point out the big holes in the ground while ignoring what happens once they're done with them. They actually save the original earth they dig out so they can replace it.

Do you have any idea the remediation efforts that go on in the oil sands?  Any idea how careful they are to make as little long-term impact as possible?  Any idea what they do to make sure it's not like what happened 100 years ago in that bastion of intelligent and thoughtful environmentalism, West Virginia?  Canada != US.

Mining is not pretty, no matter where it happens.  And I don't think there's anyone who will say that oil is our best long-term energy alternative.  Not even the PR folks for the oil companies, if you actually, you know, talk to them. But saying that if we don't kill the oil sands then all of Alberta is going to look like the moon is like saying if they don't stop mining copper, the entirety of Montana and the Mountain West is going to look like Mordor.

There's a lot of fail here.

100 years ago, coal minin meant underground mining.
In the 50s and 60s began strip mining.
Mountain top removal began ~30 years ago and continues to this day.
Google up some images of the Kentucky and West Virginia mountains.

Nobody said  that all of Alberta was going to look like Mordor. But the places they're mining today looks like Mordor. And guess what? Companies have a tendency to windup cash-free right before the last dance. And carbon plutocrats are in the running for the most evil people on the planet. How many multiples of a million deaths are we going to have if temps rise 7F? And don't play the "We don't know etc." card. It's a serious crime to randomly fire a gun in the city even if the bullet doesn't hit anyone.

This isn't my issue. I live far away from the Oil Sands region. I can't see it from my house. So, who do I trust? Who do I believe? An expatriated Canadian who feels so strongly about this that he returns to his country of birth to perform benefit concerts and educate the masses? Or should I believe that the oil industry understands the entirety of the situation and is working to make it better in meaningful ways? Who to trust?

Neil Young did.  Actually, as I said, the moon.  But keep on pretending you've been following this.

Also, as stated above, the mining industry in Alberta is not like the mining industry in West Virginia (though I had thought that the US would have made them stop the worst practices, what with people from the US coming up to us and telling us how awful Alberta is).  The example above, and I've seen it first-hand, is the saving of the original earth to replace once the mine is closed.  But there are many more examples of trying to mitigate the impact and fix previous impacts to the environment.

But keep on farking that chicken.

On cue, the chemical company involved in the West Virginia chemical spill has filed for bankruptcy. That's the way it is with capitalists. Privatize the profits. Socialize the costs.

I hope you're not implying that Canadian capitalists hover above the Earth on goassamer wings, don't poop, and can live without scraping up every stray penny that falls to the ground.

And I'm sure that Alberta's oil sands waste water has never leaked into rivers.

One of the reasons I enjoy Jack White is that he's always searching for the Grand Unification Theory of all those bands you mentioned. He doesn't always get it right and he has as many misses as hits, but when he hits it he hits it big.

And he can DO IT LIVE! fark IT, WE'LL DO IT LIVE!

I may be severely vilified for saying this but I have never liked and will never like Neil Young. It's his voice, he can't sing worth a damn. That's sort of the litmus test for me, if you are a singer and you sound like ass stop singing! Honestly, has he never heard himself? Has no one ever told him the truth?

He may be a great musician and songwriter, honestly I've never cared enough to find out, I tend to avoid music by singers I don't care for (not that I've never heard any of his music, I have, and every song I've ever heard him sing he's ruined with that nasally whine!)... If you write awesome lyrics yet murder them with your non-voice just let someone with a good voice sing them, if you play an instrument well just play it!

Carlos Santana doesn't sing more than a few chords of harmony in any given song, if that, he lets his guitar 'sing' for him. He has always had good singers for his band. Perhaps he thinks he doesn't sing well enough to carry the lead or perhaps he just gets so lost in his playing he doesn't remember to sing or maybe he doesn't want to split his attention but he always makes sure there is a beautiful voice to do the singing.
