Considering the entertainment the last thread had about this type of stuff, I hope this goes green.

Is there a compilation of videos where the kids slip and fall the 800 feet to the ground?

I don't get it. Safety isn't something I take for granted.

Well, that was utterly terrifying.

Also, that guy doing one armed pull ups? Impressive.

I found myself leaning back into my couch while watching that, which is silly, because I was not going to all off the couch, and even if I did, I probably would have been just fine.

That kid on the other hand, will probably not be just fine if he keeps doing that. A gust of wind is all it will take.

As stupid as this stuff is in its own right, it is a drop in the farking bucket compared to theutter madness of free climbing.

Wow, I thought Dean Potter must have died when he fell there at 3:17, but he's still alive. So did must have had a chute in that little backpack.

"Free climbing" (99.9% of rock climbing) is done with a rope and a belayer.  The rope is only used if the climber falls.

"Unroped climbing" is climbing without a rope.

Holy shiat.

Even though the video was only about 90 seconds long, I was anxious through the whole thing. What are these kids thinking?

2014-01-18 10:47:32 AM
by far the safest thing they were doing was hanging off the back of that train. That other stuff was some insane footage, those kids do seem extremely strong for their weight so they got that going for them...

I left it out too because it isn't really accurate.

Free, solo climbing may be done on belay.
Unroped climbing is done without a belay.

Still.

Unroped climbing is done without a belay.

Solo free climbing may be done on belay, and unroped climbing is done without a belay, but standard usage of "free solo climbing" or "free soloing" is as a synonym for unroped solo climbing.

I don't want to downplay the ridiculous nature of these videos, but not much of what they are doing is actually difficult. Most climbers could easily perform these stunts, as far as physical conditioning and skill go, but I'm guessing most climbers would be affected by those heights. It's the heights and the psychological factor they introduce. A few feet off the ground and I'd happily attempt them. Strapped in, I'd happily attempt them. And I'd probably succeed. But I would most certainly fail if I introduced the complexity involved here. Hell, I wouldn't even get far enough to fail. I'd cry like a small child and stop halfway to the destination.

I'm glad that a few of those guys were wearing helmets. You know, for safety.
