As a sovereign country, Vatican City could do that: invite them for a "conference" to get them into the Vatican's territory, then put them on trial and (after a finding of guilt) lock them away in some underground prison complex.

You do understand Priest have citizenship to other countries and that would kind of cause lots of trouble, right?

There's also the problem that lying is frowned upon in Catholic doctrine.

Diplomatic trouble?  Maybe, but I doubt anyone would cry too hard about a child molester being tried & imprisoned.  If you or I go to a foreign country, we're subject to their laws while we're there.  This would be no different.

It's not moving the goal posts to want those that were responsible for the coverup to be punished along with those that committed the crime.

I'm afraid I'll need some clarification...

When you say de-frock,

is he punishing them, or trying to make it easier

Jesus H. Christ! 400? Compared to the 170 in previous years? And that's just the ones that are pretty much as close to 100% confirmed they did it.  Are they all in jail?  That number is completely outrageous to me.

AgentPothead: Millennium: AgentPothead: I'll be more impressed when they execute them. What the fark is defrocking going to accomplish?

Historically speaking, giving religions the power to execute people has not typically ended well. This gets them out from behind the shield: is that not what you wanted?

No, they don't get to execute them. The people who got molested, they get to execute the priests who did it.

Well, yes, but there's more to execution than pulling the metaphorical trigger (or the literal one, for that matter). Someone's got to set up the provisions that make it legal to do this, and I'd rather not put that power in the hands of the Vatican.

Does the document list the 400 priests by name?  Or does it just say "hey, 400 priests were defrocked.  You can trust us."

So were these just the 400 caught during that two years? Or, as I'm hoping, was this a purge of 400 hundred pedos that pedoed over the course of decades that took two years?

Kind of afraid it was just 400 that got caught over two years.

To be fair, as a sovereign nation they technically didn't even have to show up in front of the UN. So this is actually pretty big.

If the Vatican had an underground prison complex.  IIRC, they have some deal with Italy for them to hold the Vatican's criminals.  The guy who shot JPII ended up in an Italian mental institution.

It was all the local jurisdiction requested. Statute of limitations and reluctance of victims is what hinders prosecution.

So when the church knows and takes 'internal' action without informing the authorities of this and of all relevant facts that is what now?

True, why aren't more of these guys going to jail? I grasp that some of it is statute of limitations stuff, but if the Catholic Church wants to show they're serious about taking care of this problem, they need to turn these people over to the authorities. THEN they can conduct their own investigation and see if they will defrock (and I assume, excommunicate) these men.  But first and foremost, hand them over to law enforcement, and let them deal with it. It's a crime, not a simple internal matter about some church rule.  Treat it that way. Let the people in the community know who the predators are and that they are being dealt with.

Otherwise? What's the point?

sign_of_Zeta: Ed Grubermann: sign_of_Zeta: 2wolves: I'll be more impressed when Pope JP II gets slapped upside his holiness for doing nothing.

What I don't get is how JP2 always seems to get a pass in most people's minds when basically all the alleged abuse occurred when he was the Pope.

Um, no. The abuse has been going on for centuries. No one was willing to talk openly about it until recently. But, yes, JP2 didn't do enough (if anything) about it under his watch.

The cases that people focused on were victims that mostly came from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.  It's not like anyone was railing against and protesting what a Priest did during the 1700s in 2008.

Because he's dead.  It's an unwritten rule that you don't hammer as hard on people too dead to defend themselves or be punished.

Also pedo-priests was an allegation screamingly denied (but everybody knew was true) since forever.  Actually accepting proof and chasing the systemic protection of kidfarkers up the chain was kind of groundbreaking and most of the hassle Benedict got was the evidence he was involved in the cover-ups until he became pope.

Doesn't make it right, but that's why.

Actually, I think a lot of it was that until the late 70s they weren't doing mental health evaluations on Priests. These days to become a Priest you have to clear psych eval.  Back in the 50s anyone who seemed "off" could enter the seminary as a teen.  Most people who committed the abuse appear to have entered the Priesthood before the evals became standard.  I think the Church curbed the initial cause before the fallout happened.  Of course they never resolved the issue.

What is it about catholic priests that make them so attracted to children?

If you are going to tell me it is not disproportionate to any other profession, don't even bother. I also don't buy the excuse that it is because pedophiles put themselves in jobs that will allow access to children, either. I am sure they do, but if a teacher molests a child, it is huge news. A coach molesting a child? We're still talking about one coach from three years ago. A catholic priest molesting a child is so common that it is barely news any more, and the last pope was getting rid of them at a rate of one every other day.

I think that it is the other way around. People who want to rape children realize that becoming a Catholic Priest is pretty much their gravy ticket. Not saying Catholic Priests are child rapists, but a lot of child rapists are Catholic Priests.

Gotta link for that?

From a Psych standpoint, a lot of the things that make young men join the priesthood are the same sort of things that lead to problematic sexual fixations.

An overbearing Catholic mother who is so over-protective she can't "share" her son with anyone but god (and certainly not some other woman he might marry).  Creepy, mildly incestuous, and the source of all kinds of hangups and fixations.   An inability to deal with sexual desire (perhaps the "wrong" sexual desire, perhaps just any desire at all) and joining the priesthood to try and escape it.  Celibate priests don't get horny, right?

Stephen Fry one said, "The only people who are obsessed with food are anorexics and the morbidly obese, and that in erotic terms is the Catholic church in a nutshell."  And so it shouldn't come as a surprise that someone with a sexual disorder (i.e. can't stop raping kids) would be a part of that.

Well I always assumed Pope B resigned because there was some seriously bad stuff that could go public about him, and naturally I assumed it was to do with molestation of children. If he was defrocking priests for it then that makes that less likely, though not impossible.

Does anyone know why Pope B resigned? Has it come out yet? Not the cover-up excuse, but the real reason.

Until that time, any effort any pope makes to make changes in an organzation 2,000 years old with ties to politics, criminals, and implications affecting the entire world is not enough. Certainly if these popes cared, like a bunch of the asskissers around here seem to think they care, they would have tidied up the whole organization in one afternoon. Certainly an organization so old, so rich, so powerful that took 2,000 years to build should be simple to clean out in a day.

But going on believing these popes care. Call me when each and every molesting priest bursts into flame spontaneously at the exact same time. Until then I wont be satisified with any other kind of efforts to change an old rotting dinosaur like the Catholic Church in a slow but steady and successful way!
