How many of them did he refer to the police for criminal prosecution? Was it... none?

/also, not many of them still wear frocks, so really, it's more appropriate to say he disrobed them.

God will not be frocked mocked.

Sounds to me like a Benedict apologist / loyalist leaked something because old Josef is jealous of Pope Francis getting so much positive press.

Sure, this guy is nice...but you can't make fun of him.  Its like hanging out with George Clooney all the time.  You just like the guy and he makes you want to be a better person.  However, if you hung out with Ben Affleck, you'd be making fun of him all the time.  Its so hard to decide...Clooney Pope or Affleck Pope.

So that would make John Paul...

It was all the local jurisdiction requested. Statute of limitations and reluctance of victims is what hinders prosecution.

What I don't get is how JP2 always seems to get a pass in most people's minds when basically all the alleged abuse occurred when he was the Pope.

He had to let the ones in Toronto keep at least one element of priestly attire on at all times.

Historically speaking, giving religions the power to execute people has not typically ended well. This gets them out from behind the shield: is that not what you wanted?

No, they don't get to execute them. The people who got molested, they get to execute the priests who did it.

To be fair, trying and imprisoning is not the job of the mythical Sky Daddy cult. It's the job of law enforcement and the court system, which are -- at least, in the US -- supposed to be separate entities. (They're not, but that's another matter entirely.)

Now, that's not to say that the church shouldn't be reporting these cases to the relevant authorities immediately that they're discovered. If they're not doing that, you have a legitimate gripe. But otherwise... no.

Um, no. The abuse has been going on for centuries. No one was willing to talk openly about it until recently. But, yes, JP2 didn't do enough (if anything) about it under his watch.

I'll be more impressed when one of these popes comes out in dark glasses, loaded with handguns ala the Punisher and shoots each molesting priest straight through the forehead and says in that cool action hero way, 'You've been excommunicated, biatch!' Until that time, any effort any pope makes to make changes in an organzation 2,000 years old with ties to politics, criminals, and implications affecting the entire world is not enough. Certainly if these popes cared, like a bunch of the asskissers around here seem to think they care, they would have tidied up the whole organization in one afternoon. Certainly an organization so old, so rich, so powerful that took 2,000 years to build should be simple to clean out in a day.

But going on believing these popes care. Call me when each and every molesting priest bursts into flame spontaneously at the exact same time. Until then I wont be satisified with any other kind of efforts to change an old rotting dinosaur like the Catholic Church in a slow but steady and successful way!

No, but they certainly have the ability to turn over their evidence to civilian authorities instead of shifting and hiding the problem - hundreds of times.  Losing your job isn't exactly recompense or justice for repeated sexual assault.

As a sovereign country, Vatican City could do that: invite them for a "conference" to get them into the Vatican's territory, then put them on trial and (after a finding of guilt) lock them away in some underground prison complex.

The cases that people focused on were victims that mostly came from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.  It's not like anyone was railing against and protesting what a Priest did during the 1700s in 2008.

You do understand Priest have citizenship to other countries and that would kind of cause lots of trouble, right?

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Terminator Pope that Non-Catholic/Atheist Americans want to step up and nuke the past for a golden future do not care for the mealy-mouthed, peaceful parts of the bible. Vengeance is mine sayeth the Robo-Pope.
