Oh, this is going to be glorious. A man who is on record as saying "Women, without a doubt, have more rights than men in the United States" is going on about straw feminism.

I need to go make popcorn for this thread. Perhaps drop Lewis' law a couple times or two to really get people really pissed up in a furor.

Men aren't allowed to be men anymore?

Only if you define "being men" as being rude, crass, flatulent, cheap beer-swilling, homophobic sexists.

IOW, the FOX chief target demographic.

Anyone who is concerned about being less of a man, or losing their man card because of "Less manly" activities or other groups having equal rights was never a man to begin with.

I always thought being a man was about being comfortable enough in your masculinity that you don't need to prove it with stupid machismo.

2014-01-17 01:49:38 PM
He's right. We need more men. Strong men. Toned men with bulging, pulsating muscles under their rugged skin, glistening with sweat after a long hard day of work. Men that worked so hard that the beads of sweat are collecting in their tufts of wiry body hair, asking for it to be wicked away by a welcoming tongue or shared with a partner. Men that know what they want and aren't afraid to hold it down and take it. Men who appreciate a strong, but caring partner. One that knows a man's needs like no woman ever could. These men we need aren't satisfied with the way the government has shoved policies down our throats over and over. We should welcome these avatars of raw, unbridled masculinity and their ideas of what the men in this country need jammed down their throats. I've been waiting for someone to speak up about this and I'm sure he and I can agree that until these men come our country will be waiting to receive them.

Lionel Mandrake: Only if you define "being men" as being rude, crass, flatulent, cheap beer-swilling, homophobic sexists.

I think this is a larger part of it than most realize. This homophobic and sexist behavior isn't as acceptable as it used to be. These people are not used to being called out, or being shunned - they've always done the shunning. They perceive this as a loss of freedom or an attack on their way of life. That scares them and forces them to conjure up some vague grand theory to explain it when in reality it's simply society saying we are no longer tolerant of your intolerance. Deal with it.

That is a wisdom I have learned mostly by example, as I matured.   All of  the real, very serious bad asses I can number among my current friends and former teachers and mentors had one thing in common.  NONE of them ever made a big deal about it.   My first AIkido instructor was a 5th degree black belt in various disciplines, could paralyze your arm by pressing his thumb causally on a particular spot on you should and at 6'1 and 160lbs MAYBE  had no trouble throwing my then 300+lb self across a room without having to so much as interrupt his sentence.   And never once in my acquaintance did he ever brag of skills, raise his voice or feel the need to beat his chest in any way shape or form, even when people were giving him shiat.

Same with the kindly old man who used to tutor me at the rifle range when I was 14.   He was very old, and very old fashioned in his extremely polite manners, and his hands shook badly except when he held a rifle.  I found out only AFTER his passing that he was also a WWI vet, a sniper before the army officially had such things, and a HIGHLY decorated war hero.  he never once so much as told a war story.

A close friend of a few years back is a real, live, "semi"-retired Navy SEAL.  But you have to know him VERY well before he even admits to being any kind of special forces soldier at all, and it took his wife insisting because it was important to some legal work I was doing for them, for him to admit he was an actual SEAL.

anyone who feels the need to TELL you how manly, or dangerous, or special they are,  is almost guaranteed not to be.

My own particular understanding of manliness has evolved over the years to mean "handle your shiat, whatever that may be,  and do it quietly, competently and professionally. Be able to take care of and defend wen necessary those put on this earth to be part of "you and yours";  and never make a big deal out of doing any of the above.
