Well, technically UT is also Utah, but, yeah, it's only two more letter to spell out the whole state. Don't even get me started on OH or all those M-ones: MA, MS, MI, ME .... who can ever remember which stands for what?

They had a crack suicide squad in the acclaimed historical documentary, Life of Brian.

Perhaps the Talking Points Memo admins are concerned that pictures of real bullets may accidentally go off and hit a picture of a person.

To The Escape Zeppelin!: I just don't get the whole "kill your family and then suicide" thing. Are these people really so self centered that they think their family members won't be able to exist without them? Hell since they're the crazy suicidal one their family will probably rest easier if they weren't around.

Yes. Yes they are. Experts call people like this police officer "family annihilators." Often they kill after some kind of financial stress, so they think, if I can't make you happy, nobody can. Other family annihilators in the news include the guy who threw his toddler off a building before jumping himself. The thinking of that guy was, if I can't have you, nobody can.
I like the term family annihilator because it brings domestic violence to mind. Only some dickwad would violently annihilate his own family. We only care that the coward killed himself so we know we don't have to hunt him down and convict him.
Murder-suicide is usually reserved for when two people are dead. These are often in domestic violence situations. They should be called murders, with the subsequent suicide of the cowardly murderer.
Like Newtown. No one called that a multiple murder-suicide. It was a mass murder. The subsequent suicide of the cowardly murderer is an afterthought in that case.
From wikipedia, on family annihilator types "the anomic killer sees his family purely as a status symbol; when his economic status collapses, he sees them as surplus to requirements. The disappointed killer seeks to punish the family for not living up to his ideals of family life. The self-righteous killer destroys the family to exact revenge upon the mother, in an act that he blames on her. Finally, the paranoid killer kills their family in what they imagine to be an attempt to protect them from something even worse."
The paranoid family annihilator will often be a woman (from news stories I've seen, often only the children are killed by a mother with post-partum psychosis). What do you think this Utah cop's excuse is? Too broke and shamed to allow my family to live? Or so angry at wife/mother-in-law who wants to take my children away, that I'd rather no one have them?
Either way he can't claim PP psychosis, can he?

mbillips: tallen702: mbillips: What are those bullets in the photo illustration on TPM? Blanks? Tear gas rounds? Paintballs?

Blanks.

Huh, hadn't seen that kind. I've used a blank pistol a LOT in acting, and the blanks were just crimped at the end, like this:

[www.replicagunsupply.com image 219x180]

I find it mildly amusing that they couldn't use real bullets in the illustration, because they might spontaneously load themselves into the pistol and go off. That's probably not even a real handgun.

That's because with a blank pistol/starter pistol, you don't want any kind of projectile being thrown out the end of the pistol. Plastic capped blanks are used by some militaries for force-on-force training with real weapons containing special adapters for MILES gear and the like. They're also used to launch rifle grenades (now mainly obsolete) since shooting a grenade with an actual bullet would be less than wise.

Sometimes I think it would be logical to do society a favor and kill someone who 'deserves' it.  Though I'm against the death penalty (and not suicidal).  I think the person should be hands down evil, similar to most of Dexter's victims.  Short of a remorseless murder being released on a technicality that person would be difficult to find.  The real problem with that plan would be if your mental state had dissolved enough for suicide to be an option, selecting a rational target would probably be prone to failure.

I wonder if this person thought he was exacting a just punishment or was somehow being merciful.

I think most of them are REALLY ANGRY, and they kill their whole family first. Then they go, "Oh, crap, I killed my whole family. My life is over," and THEN they shoot themselves. Suicide is a form of murder, you know; it's a short step from being OK with killing yourself to being OK with killing other people, particularly if you have sociopathic tendencies.

I agree with this.  It could all stem from anger issues, and mil had a huge problem with his anger and had no problem telling him what she thought.  After killing her, then killing the wife, he killed the kids because he felt they suffered enough and life would only get worse for them.  It's possible he killed the kids first, but that would be horrible for her to watch him kill them before her.  Either way, he proved mil right and he couldn't live with himself for that.

2014-01-17 07:40:10 PM
Hate to get serious here but the last person you would expect to start mowing down you (and your family members) is your father or mother (or whoever).  I think there really is no defense to someone determined to carry out a murder-suicide event of this type.  I've been reading about family annihilators for some 50 years (since I was a little kid) - can't really say I heard of it ending with a member of the family stopping it all with a gun (I'm sure it's happened, just don't remember it).  However, if you're determined to act (in such a heinous manner), guns make it a whole lot easier!

His premise wasn't religion. His premise was that he was running a weird sex cult, and he murdered a U.S. Congressman to try to keep it under wraps, and a world of shiat was about to descend upon him, so he whacked everybody to prevent losing his Supreme Leader role. Most of the Jonestown residents were Americans, which is why the Congressman came down there to investigate. Religion drew a lot of members into the cult, but Jones' motivation was pretty similar to any domestic murder-suicide -- violence as a way to maintain control.

So you're saying he was a politician? They are the main class of people who want to be the only ones who can murder lots of people to stay in control.

Narrator[Opening Narration] In last week's episode of Soap, Jessica came back after walking out on Chester, and told him if he was ever unfaithful again she'll leave him for good. Jessica then went to visit Corrine, only Corrine wasn't there, but Peter was and with another woman. Jessica was so angry that Peter was cheating on her daughter, she threatened to kill him. Corrine came home later and also found Peter with another woman, upset she checked into a motel, called Father Tim and said she was going to kill herself. Father Tim rushed over and found Corrine wasn't going to kill herself, she only felt like killing herself. Actually, Peter was the one she really wanted to kill. And Peter, who was taking a shower after his busy day, much to his surprise, was in fact killed. Confused? You won't be after this week's episode of Soap. We begin this week's episode the morning after Burt was able and Mary was willing.

Chief Tinkler: What can assume from the fact that he was stabbed, strangled, shot, suffocated, and bludgeoned?
Jodie: That he didn't commit suicide.
Chief Tinkler: We can assume that Peter Campbell either had many killers or he had one killer who really hated his guts.
