(Talking Points Memo)   While Texas usually makes it easy to write the entire state off as dark-red backwater; it's worth noting that the mayor of Houston just married her long time, same-sex, partner. Of course, she had to go to CA to do it, ..but still   (talkingpointsmemo.com) divider line 206

EatenTheSun: Ishidan: Why, it's almost like the more social contact you have, the more liberal you become!

Or possibly the less self reliant you are, the more liberal you become.

Or possibly, you realize that living in a society means that when everyone around you is living better, we all live better, including ourselves, you become a liberal. Of course, if you're only interested in yourself, then conservatism is right for you.

Haha. You somehow think living in a city is living better. And that self reliance equates to narcissism.

Freedom  comes with two burdens, there are others but the two biggies are self reliance and self responsibility.

The more these two burdens are lessened so is your freedom.  Obviously there has to be trade offs.  For example we need roads, everybody cannot build their own road, but thee price you pay are things like speed limits, vehicle inspections, taxes etc.  Emergency services would be another category.

So the more you have to rely on government/the more power you give it for things the less freedom have.

The more liberal among us, possibly in attempt to change how freedom is defined to suit their purpose, have tried to redefine rights when they are nothing more than government services that do nothing to enhance your individual freedom.  Things like health care, child care,  a job,  government provided whatever are not really rights, because they are dependent on governments ability to afford them, and also because they increase the power and control of government over your life.

Real rights  like privacy,  free speech, etc are not dependent or should not be on you meeting some government criteria, getting a license or income reporting  before you can exercise them  etc  You do not have to "qualify" for free speech the way you have to for food stamps.  You lose  real rights like privacy by qualifying for food stamps

Self responsibility is the same way  You do not want to face the consequences for your actions like building on a flood plan, unsafe sex, having children you cannot afford  and you turn to government to at least alleviate some of the financial consequences of your poor decision making.  This is not freedom because that government assistance  comes at a similar cost in rights.

My own observations from living in Western Europe is that  they are more interested in being cared for than being free.  Less risks.  I have always equated living in Germany  like having to live in one being HOA.

We have gotten the same way . We are more than willing to trade rights like privacy for a government health care plan that is run by the IRS.  The burden  of dealing with  it ourselves is too great for many it wold seem

lilplatinum: whither_apophis: A former coworker was from Houston, would always go on about how it can just annex any city next to it. Never really paid attention but if true I could see how swallowing up the 'burbs could lead to atypical election results.

They annexed the suburb I grew up in (kingwood) back in 1996 much to our chagrin.  We sued the shiat out of them and got enough people elected to change the annexaiton laws in 1999 so Houston can't keep gobbling up everything around it to extend it's disgusting urban sprawl ever wider as unrestricted as it used to.

Like it or don't, the sprawl cannot be completely contained. It is our cancer.

Don't tell me what I think. I never said city or country living is better or worse. I've done both. And I'm pretty self-reliant. I just think that considering others' needs is essential to a successful society. I think it's ok to pitch in and not just flip everyone off & tell them to fark off, I got mine.
