And as memories of the polar vortex fade, and snowfall (some ski resorts in Oregon and Idaho either opened really late or STILL haven't opened...) and rain fall short of historical averages the rest of this winter and into spring, and we have record high temperatures again this summer, denialism will fall.

In short, we're farked, because people think climate change means it has to get warmer everywhere all at once.

2014-01-17 11:59:54 AM
We're farked because if people actually believed in it, it would be real, then it would cost money to fix.  It is much better to ignore it and hope it goes away.

I think we should be allowed to set their houses on fire, and when they complain we just deny it and say that their house gets warmer every day and colder every night and it's just a natural cycle.

2014-01-17 12:58:33 PM
When climate change really starts to ramp up you are also going to have a dramatic rise in "you see" levels.

2014-01-17 12:58:42 PM
Wait?  Did we already save the rain forest?  I thought we were still working on that?  Or was it whales?  shiat, I can't keep up with whatever boogeyman the news wants me to freak-out about.

These are the same people that deny evolution despite mountains of evidence, then claim either scientists are liars, or they just make stuff up to collect millions in grant money. So, no surprise.

Thank TV for telling people that because it's cold out for a week, global warming is a hoax.

First you libs complain there's a hole in the Ozone, then you complain about the temperature when we blocked up the only way to vent those greenhouse gases.

Geez.

Even if true I know the solution isn't to create another Tax Scam for the masses.  Are they going to jail the biggest polluters instead of leveling small fines which are effectively just a tax to allow polluting to continue?  Probably not.  Only thing a carbon tax will do is stiffle competition and allow the worst offenders to continue to increase profits and have stronger strangle holds on their industries.

The southwestern US is going to BURN this year. Southern California went straight from Fall to Spring, we aren't going to get any precipitation until at least MAY, the snowpack is practically nonexistent, we are in the middle of a drought, and the wildfires are already starting.

I think that every time winter rolls around, the morons in the population think "huh, I guess that global warming stuff is BS after all," and then summer arrives and everything LIGHTS ON FIRE and they change their mind again.

2014-01-17 01:06:01 PM
I hear the polar vortex will be heading south again to disprove global warming once and for all.

This thread reminds me of a work crew I was on, decades ago, with a couple of bible thumpers (in their late teens, to be fair) who were convinced that the stories of earthquakes and floods was direct evidence that the End was nigh.  I tried to explain that those things had been happening for a long, long time, but to no avail.  Ah, the crazy places faith will take you.

Well if the "available data" that they are working with has been faked or measurements were taking near artificial/natural heat sources then yeah kind of.

At one time there were a lot of experts that were convinced the earth was the center of the universe.

so basically american flatlined it's production thru more efficient engines and stricter environmental regulations.  You can say it's 'too much' but the first step is to stop the progress, which we've done.

Sadly, we're going to get taxed like crazy because of china and india.

They say slavery in the US is dead.  Nope, we just outsourced it, just like our pollution.  As long as it's not in front of someones eyes over here, everything is just okeydokey.

Depends on his point. The article actually notes that the heat is likely being stored, and even concludes that when the conditions that are letting the oceans store the heat start to subside, things are likely to get worse.

Right. The people that actually give a damn about science are the ones who are honest about the data they record and observations they make, discuss the nuances of these findings, and are open to interpretations from their peers. Then we've got brostorm posting a link to the same article sharing these nuances and findings put forth by these scientists and saying "see, no warming, case closed". Because they don't have their own studies backing up the conclusions they want to be true, so they use any natural uncertainty in the process that is discovery as proof their ignorance overrides the reality of the science.

flynn80: At one time there were a lot of experts that were convinced the earth was the center of the universe.

Yes, because it fit with 99% of their observed data. It was only replaced when someone came along with an alternate theory that was supported by 99.9% of their observed data. When someone comes up with an alternate theory that fits climate models and observed data better than the current theory, it'll be accepted. That's how science works.

True, but if it's not him, then it's green text or some other troll. All one can do it continue to point out the logical fallacies, and RTFA to demonstrate why the trolls are trolls.

I'll admit I like brostorm, he at least posts articles that are often quite good. They rarely say what he thinks they say, I don't think he actually reads them, but they are often interesting. It's almost a form of concern trolling, only reversed.

LOL farklibs worrying about everything.  Aren't sea levels rising a good thing? More water is good cause it's the lifeblood of nature. And so what if the average temperature of the oceans is rising? That just makes for good swimming.

It's not like things could exponentially worse.

I have the burden of actually having studied climate in college. I'm not convinced that "global warming" or "climate change" or whatever you want to call it is anything more than fluctuations in weather, because quite honestly, we don't have enough true climate records to know. is there weird shiat going on? Yep. There's always weird shiat going on. That's weather. Polar vortexes and hurricanes and droughts are weather. Is the temperature climbing? yes. But you know what? We just had a major volcanic eruption or two, which usually naturally reverses that warming trend.

Basically, yes, there is warming. Whether it's caused by mankind, sun cycles, or simply better instrumentation, I can't tell you. But I'm not convinced that it's all quite so doom and gloom, and I actually happen to know a lot more about the subject than, oh, anyone who didn't major in meteorology/earth sciences. So it aggravates the shiat out of me when people, even scientists of other disciplines, shout and call names (A denier! We got a denier over here! He must be a major asshole! Off with his head! fark that guy! He's a denier!) Jesus christ, people, how can you spout "Don't be a dick" with one breath and "This person who has an informed opinion that doesn't jibe with mine is a farktard and should die" with the other?

No, most experts were not convinced of this. We've been over cultures like the Greeks knowing this stuff how many times?

That point aside, data that is "THE BIBLE SAYS SO!" is in no way equivalent to actual data from actual measurements.

False equivalence is false.
