superdolfan1: So let's see, it had 8 million viewers, which is 28% down from last year.  How does that compare with the rest of the cable shows?  If only there were a service that would give us the numbers for the week...

But wait, there is!  Looks like it beat out pretty much every other cable show out there.

Cable week: HBO's True Detective opened with 2.3 million Sunday, followed by 1 million for two Girls episodes; Showtime's Shameless claimed 1.7 million, followed by House of Lies (842,000) and Episodes (543,000). Tuesday starts: BET's Being Mary Jane (3.3 million); ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars (3.2 million); FX's Justified and OWN's The Haves and Have Nots (2.8 million each); TBS's Cougar Town (1.9 million Tuesday). And MTV's Teen Wolf scored a series-high 2.5 million with Monday's return.

American Idol had 15.2 million

bradkanus: They had kept their right-wing crap out of the show.  It was an outside source that brought it in.

I'm sure the ratings will continue to fall - you can only do silly skits for so long before nobody cares... or you could be Saturday Night Live.

There's somebody who still cares about Saturday Night Live?

All it takes is a couple percentage points, and those checks suddenly get lowered. A couple more and the show is struck off.

A lot of people don't know how hard it is to start getting ridiculous amounts of money, only to have it start to wither. You get used to having X thousand dollars a week. I guarantee you one thing: if 'ol pappy here 'wrecks' the show paychecks his kids / grand kids will never let him forget it happened. You don't want to be the person that kills the golden goose.

There's always another redneck to put on the teevee.

justtray: lordjupiter: HA!  Where are all the people who thought it was all a publicity stunt?  Did you really believe that lazy bit of rationalization?  Or were you just trying to diminish what happened?  Like when other cultural leaders such as Limbaugh or Coulter say something insanely idiotic and get the "just an entertainer" bailout?*

I said it while this was going on...they had NOTHING to gain in this.  It was not going to attract new fans, and would only push away those who were borderline curious to begin with.

Just accept that people like this exist and, surprise, they have no social filter.

*(entertainers may speak about politics if they are conservative...liberal entertainers need to STFU and do their jobs!)

Couldn't it have been both? That he really does believe that AND it was a marketing stunt? I still believe that it was. The reaction from A&E fits precisely. First, weird, overblown punishment which they then immediately backed off coinciding with a huge marathon over Christmas and a new season.

Doesn't really matter what it was, but I don't think we can say it was not a marketing stunt.

A&E backed off after the right wing boycott machine started kicking up dust, and the rest of the cast said they wouldn't go on without Duck Moses.  If their marketing people had any hand in this they should all be fired.  But it doesn't make sense that it was.  They're just rednecks with money and a tv show, and sometimes the shiat rednecks say is not going to be PC.  It really is as simple as that.

Was anyone else totally consumed by a need to sing the original theme song to "The Wayans Brothers," when they read his super racist bit about hoeing cotton in the fields?

Shawn and Marlin in Urkle-esque outfits wearing comically huge Afro wigs skip down the street together:

We're brothers!
And we're happy
And we're singing
and we're colored!
Da da da da!

Gimme a Hug!

*Angry Shawn and Marlin shove camera away*

That's not such a bad deal for Obama--those were last season's winners!

Stop with this. It's not a valid counter argument.

That picture shows that they are not, in fact, rednecks, but actors pretending to be them. Or have you seen many rednecks with frosted tips?

Looks may change, but you don't just get to become a redneck one day. Or wait, that's EXACTLY what they did. And those aren't the only pictures. They're ALL posers. Every single one of them.

It was probably more about repping their brand.  I'm not saying they don't LIKE this stuff, but they've concocted a very particular image of themselves as gross backwoods cousin-farking-hicks to sell their products to people that (for whatever reason) find that awesome.

'Birds feel pain, stress and fear as much as humans and other animals. The suffering caused by recreational duck shooting is unacceptable. Many ducks and other birds are killed for no reason except a gruesome and outdated sense of what is "fun".'

'International evidence shows that between 20% and 40% of ducks and geese that are struck by shotgun pellets are never retrieved, and die lingering deaths.'
http://www.safe.org.nz/Campaigns/Duck-shooting/

'If population control is needed, humane alternatives exist. These include collection of eggs in areas considered overpopulated, which would reduce numbers over time. Farmers can also make use of the bird's natural fear of predators by using crop protection methods such as decoys.'

i have no doubt Willie had the idea that no looking like GQ models will help him sell hunting stuff to hunters, but *I'M* saying they did it way before A&E showed up.

Yeah, once a show's been on for a few seasons, a network will generally keep milking it for all it's worth long after any reason for its existence has disappeared. Case in point: The Simpsons.

I'm saying, one day they realized, "all of our consumers are dumb, xenophobic rednecks with strong Christian values, so we should adjust our 'image' to be more in line with their expectations."

Whether or not they did it knowing a TV show is coming is difficult to determine, but it does fit the narrative exceedingly well. The entire show is fabricated and scripted, so I don't see this as a stretch in the slightest if someone were to make that accusation. The truth is probably a blend of both of these paragraphs.

Also - lets ask a better question(s).

Would you watch the show if all the main guys had short frosted tips?
Do you think the show would have as high ratings as it does if they did?

2014-01-17 02:36:28 PM
Or it could be that the show has run its course.  I've probably watched about 10 episodes.  The show only has two plots:  fish out of water and snobs vs. slobs.  There are only so many times you can recycle that.  They've done "taking the girls hunting (aka fish out of water)" several times.  They need better writers.

Along this lines, who the f goes to the NFL instead of MLB. Contracts are way huger in MLB, fully guaranteed, less prone to injury, and there's less players. Still kind of perplexes me.

Also, is this what you were going with? Because you might want to get your facts straight before you start with the ridiculous distortions of reality. Or do you think 1960s NFL is the same as 2010s NFL?

Guy didn't even play his senior season in college, never had any NFL career or even an offer. How much do you think NFL players made in the 1960s exactly?

Just give it up bud, they aren't gonna sleep with you and I'm really sorry your imaginary perception of them was found out to be a lie. I had the same reaction when I found out Santa wasn't real when I was six.

They're not pure tv phonies, imo.  They could be outdoorsy businessmen with right wing values that went native, or rednecks at heart that gave up trying to look corporate.

Either way, don't care and it doesn't matter.  Course of action is the same.

Other than misunderstanding which one supposedly had an NFL deal lined up (which turned out to be a lie anyway), all of my arguments absolutely dismantled you.

The fact that you have to attempt to turn an obvious meme into a false attempt at ad hominem shines much more brightly on your inability to debate than mine.

But we both know that. My advice, choose your next words wisely or choose none at all.

Sure, when they came up with the Duck Commander show years before switching to A&E, they realized their images weren't going to grab as much money as they can make pretending they drink moonshine out of mason jars until they're blind.

They put together a focus group based on dummies who watch the Outdoors Channel (mostly southerners who are too fat and drunk to actually do anything outside) tried their luck, and were told they looked like College Educated Limousine Liberals who couldn't even bait a hook.  So they went as backwoods as possible and suddenly the braindead slobs they showed pilots to were soaking their XXXXL Dale Earnhardt T-shirts with the arms cut off with jism.  That was the look they ran with.

Google birds mirror test, the only bird that has demonstrated self awareness was some magpie and possibly pigeons.  No evidence that ducks have self awareness, unless you can provide some.

Computers can emulate sensory feedback, that doesn't give something rights.

So, some of the other series are up while DD lost viewers. I have to admit that I am surprised that the DD viewers are heading over to Teen Wolf.

For a guy who makes a living by holding something in one hand and wrapping his lips around the tip of it, he sure seems like he has issues.

/I wonder if his next career will be sausage maker. Or sword swallower...

Glenford: Lord_Baull: MyRandomName: Should I list the yearly numbers of any hit tv show to show your ignorance?

Yes. Please show me the ratings tumble in the fifth year of the following shows:

Here's the data (IMDB ratings)

As I suspected, no drop off whatsoever in ratings until much, much later in the show's run. Not sure what his point was.

Some people have this weird fantasy of sports outdoorsmen as these gross low-class clodhoppers who are half Dukes of Hazard and half... I dunno Deliverance?

Most of them have no exposure to that world they just like to sit around fantasizing about their stupid log cabin where the regulators and the tax men couldn't get them, and they'd be free to drink their bathtub liquor and have sex with all their close relations.  Even deep into the appalachians, almost nobody actually looks or acts like that.

Girl From The North Country: Hickory-smoked: How many people here actually give a tug about reality television?

Just 'Chopped'

"Chopped" is a game show.

TV people don't like to call it that, preferring "competitive reality", but it's exactly the same thing. They have a contest. There is a prize at the end. It's not a "sport", because that would be handled by a different department if it were. Therefore it's a game show.

I'd like to see some of the DD women in the porn industry. Fluffer at the least.

Diogenes: The free market is all fine and good until it hampers conservatives.

Speaking of ratings and the free market, here are the Better Business Bureau ratings for the Duck Commander company.

Sometimes a duck call is just a duck call.

/other times, it's a clue that maybe there's a tortured soul just longing to go on long camping holidays with the boys...oh wait...nevermind...

ManateeGag: But seriously, who, other than a die hard redneck, would give up an NFL career because it conflicted with hunting season. Or was that story made up for PR purposes?

Complete BS. The NFL had 17 rounds in those days compared to seven today. I looked it up a few weeks ago. The total number of players drafted was over 400 if I remember correctly and Phil Robertson was not one of them. He may have been invited to training camp by the Redskins, but he would have been just above the tackling dummy on the depth chart before being cut.

/DucKKK Dynasty™ is nothing but a fraud.
//Not surprised.

Lord_Baull: Wrong. The ratings are down because people protested A&E's disgusting treatment of a Christian American.
