I read a book about this guy.  It was interesting.

I don't have much sympathy for him.  He didn't even try to help Gilligan and the gang get off the island.

They don't make soldiers like that anymore.

Pizza's here!

Trained as an information officer and guerrilla tactics coach, Onoda was dispatched to Lubang in 1944 and ordered never to surrender, never to resort to suicidal attacks and to hold firm until reinforcements arrived.

Whenever I have to describe a really tangled mess of brush or exceptionally bad thicket in the woods, I say "There's Japanese in there that don't know the war's over".

So, this is how the surrender-ability scale must go, then:

French |===============| Japanese

Why the sad tag?

In 1984, still very much a celebrity, he established a youth camp, where he taught young Japanese some of the survival techniques he had used during his 30 years in hiding, when he lived on wild cows and bananas.

Must have been a hell of a summer camp.

Sounds like he had a real Rip Van Winkle moment.

xanadian: So, this is how the surrender-ability scale must go, then:

Study a little about the Japanese mentality towards their emperor and their psyche during World War II, and it's pretty terrifying to see how they were. They viewed the Emperor as a literal living God, and were willing to blow themselves up at his behest rather than be captured and bring dishonor to their family.

That this guy, cut off from all radio communications, for decades continued to fight is not surprising.

Killing people and/or dying for a living god is terrifying.  Killing people and/or dying for an invisible god is normal.  Got it

And you have to figure mental illness played a role.   Holding out for five years,  I could see. But you knew the war was going badly when you got your orders.  So after a while, when you haven't heard a single peep from your superiors, or even the slightest hint that a war is till going on, you gotta wonder if something's up, if you are sane and rational.   Especially if that goes one  for YEARS, let alone decades

The others continued to survey military facilities in the area, attacking local residents and occasionally fighting with Philippine forces

How much ammo did these guys have?

2014-01-17 11:54:05 AM
It's strange how this article is implying that that he killed Filipinos in "battle" shootouts.  But, the fact is many of, if not all, the people he killed after the war were civilian farmers tending their crops.  This guy gets a celebrity homecoming and the others get dead.  Far from an honorable hero in my book.

A bull stormed through the jungle, and gored a friend of mine

what do you mean wasted? living out in nature, no job or mortgage or traffic hassles, living off the booty you raid. just running around looting and plundering and shooting up the place and blowing stuff up whenever you feel like it. being away from it all when you don't.
hell, actually sounds kind of fun and relaxing compared to what most of us cubicle rats call lives. less stressful anyway. probably less dangerous, too.
