As one who got caught in this nightmare yesterday, let me tell you how it went down.

1. drive downtown on an errand.......bright & sunny
2. see black of cloud of death coming over the horizon
3. failure point:  decide to stop @ grocery store ........White Out condition 1 Apha hits...
4. roads turn to slick white ice within first 30 min's of storm
5. speed next 3 hours attempting to get home past traffic accidents......
6. no profit........

Farking nightmare........DAR

p.s. No warning from weather lady on the news......fail.......

I'm from a place where we handle snow and inclement weather better than this. The place you are from is not as good as the place I am from. Another derogatory statement about you and the people that live in your area. Statement of superiority.

Well, the sports team from my area is superior to the sports team from your area!

Since Iowans live with snow nearly year-round, I'm going to assume that every car involved in the pileups was driven by people from other, more temperate climes.

Went through a white out blizzard on the road to the Grand Canyon in June of 1995. Terrifying.  We had just been in +100 temps at sea level. So, the snow was a surprise. As was the thunder. Which, in a blizzard, doesn't go WHAMRUMBLERUMBLE.

It goes *poof*.

Des Moines, Iowa
Perfect example. Look at the snow around Des Moines, Stuart. You can't drive in it, you can't see through it. Government says it's due to global warming, but I know the reason, Stuart. It's them queers! They're in it with the aliens! They're building white-out zones for gay martian landings! I SWEAR TO GOD!

I thought people up north knew how to drive in shiatty winter weather. That's what they're always telling us, anyway.

This.

I went out to get lunch from a place about a half mile from my office. Drove around two accidents and barely missed another. Also missed the turn into the store because I couldn't see past the lane next to me. Had to navigate based on the ruts in the snow.
Radar indicated that it was not snowing at the time.

You're thinking of Nebraska, unless Iowa can fit 200,000 people in their stadium.

Traffic was also rerouted on Interstate Highway 35 at Cumming after a semitrailer truck jackknifed and flipped sideways, blocking the road.

Worst part is it wasn't even snowing there.

2014-01-17 12:10:47 PM
At least 25 cars were involved in a pileup on Interstate Highway 80 near Waukee during the evening rush hour. Another 20-plus cars jammed U.S. Highway 169 between Adel and De Soto.

45 cars is not "two 40 car pileups", subby.

Good job with the math there...

Camp Randall in Madison is Wisconsin's "5th Largest city" when filled.

The storms have acquired stealth technology.  At least the snow in your area doesn't taste like licorice and give you diarrhea.  On the up side It's unknown if it's a carcinogen.

/yea yea, don't eat the snow.

I've always experienced Iowa as a kind of subtropical northern Florida with cool winters and long, hot summers.

Okay, I'm exaggerating.

Sometimes, I'm really really glad I don't have to commute from Marshalltown waaay out to the southwest part of Des Moines anymore.

1 hour from 63rd and Park, to 63rd and Grand.
1 hour from 63rd and Grand to 235 east entrance ramp.
(total travel, 2.7 miles, in a straight line.)

30 minutes from entrance to E University exit.

When it comes to population. Iowa is about right in the middle. It isn't highly populated by any stretch, but it also isn't an example of low population either.

Same with size. I think it literally is 25th in size.

The one thing where Iowa really stands out, is how often it is just completely average. No other state comes close to how average Iowa is.

/with the exception of corn and hogs

I also loved the video showing what stopped traffic looks like. Or was that just a Ken Burnsesque video of a picture?

An any case, Wisconsin has the best snow caused pile up of all time

Came here to say this.

If you're going to make fun of Iowa, you can make fun of how boring and white it is.

Oh, and the number of really crappy post-Pantera groove metal bands.

And the fact that virtually nothing of significance is open in Des Moines after 10pm.

But doing that would involve  actually knowing anything about Iowa, which--I know--no one cares enough to do.

Snow schmow. Unexpected and untreated glare ice on a major highway is going to cause serious wipeouts no matter how long the people involved have lived in the north.

It appears we still have some type of record. Stafford County, setting the standard.

Not here in Indiana. Just got rid of the subzero temperatures and ice from last week just to be covered in about one to two inches of snow again and people already forgot how to drive in it.
