will they be manufacturing something at this institute?

It will never work unless they fix the root causes of the jobs being outsourced.

Obvious Labor Pandering President is obvious Labor pandering President.

Unless this institute makes a time machine to travel back in time and eliminate all future 3rd world labor and robots...this is a colossal waste of time and money.

I'm sure the only thing that institue will create is jobs and paperwork for the people working there.

FTA: Republicans in Congress said that if Mr. Obama were serious about reinvigorating the job market, he would support Republican-backed initiatives and approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

I'm sure that will create a ton of jobs... for waste management and environmental spill cleanup companies.

Also, what Republican initiatives, exactly? All that's been coming out of them is repealing labor protections and more laws to regulate ladyparts.

Perverse tax incentives. Congress could pass Debbie Stabenow's bill for starters.

Why the FARK do you want to create manufacturing jobs?!?!

The entire point of the last 30-40 years has been driving the cost of manufacturing down to ZERO, whether via Chinese Labor or increased automation, while creating low-value service sector and high-value knowledge jobs.

American Manufacturing workers (at labor union  greater than minimum wage prices) are too damn expensive, unless there's some serious value-add going on.  And my big grief with unions is that they usually ban the things that would let the workers add that value.  Not necessarily safety, but "Wait 3 hours for union electrician to show up to replace lightbulb.  Factory is shut down for 3 hours".  And the emphasis on seniority and preserving the complete idiots at the expense of the whole company.  And the incredible corruption.

Don't you WANT Actually Functioning Socialism?   This is the way to get there.  Drive the cost of production to free, piss off the unskilled workers, and you can get Socialism.  That's the entire point of Socialism.  Otherwise, you end up starving 60 million people to death, slaughtering another 100 million, producing NOTHING innovative for 60 years (AK-47 aside), and stagnating culturally and economically.

The decline of US manufacturing is a myth.  American manufacturing continues to grow faster than inflation.  In real dollars, American manufacturing has never produced more than it does now.   What has declined is manufacturing jobs, and we don't WANT to fix that.

Only one country in the world has a larger manufacturing sector than we do (again in real dollars) - China.  However, their factories are so inefficient that they require over 100 million factory workers to produce what we do with a tenth the people.

Want to increase US manufacturing jobs?  Easy.  Make our factories as "efficient" as the Chinese ones.  Or better yet, don't.
