Snow Day

I sit here,
Warm and snug.

I listen to the wind howl,
Like a pack of hounds.

Chasing the fox,
And losing the scent.

I can feel the wind push
Against the house,

Demanding entrance.
Only to be denied.

I curl tighter.
Snuggle deeply.

Sigh.

A purr rumbles
Through my being.

It resonates and joins,
The beating,

Of my loved ones heart.

Together,
We are comfort,
Warmth.

Seperate,
Yet joined.

An invisible bond.
Stretching beyond,
The here and now.

Infinite.
Wonder.

Cat.

jso2897: "He has a soft spot for rescue animals," she said. "I think it's an amazing thing, a sacrifice like this."

Semantic question - why do we refer to the character attribute of compassion as a "soft spot", as if it were some sort of weakness?

It is a testament to the sad state of humanity that an act of kindness is not just considered by some to be a weakness, but it is also news worthy when it happens. Compassion, empathy, right action for the good of the wider society, including its animal companions/partners - that should be the default position for any human. From my own experiences with small kids, it IS the default position for most of them. They're either budding little psychos right out of the womb, which is exceedingly rare from what I've seen, or they're taught to be something other than compassionate and empathetic over time. It's a cultural problem at its core (IMO, but what do I know? Not a whole lot, when it comes right down to it.) I'm just glad that good nature and tender heart is still around at all, even as I am sad it's a news worthy event due to its rarity.

Regarding the egg color debates. This is how I have learned the difference, white eggs are almost always from battery hens. They live their short lives in a very small cage, with the lights on for 23 hours a day. Hens never sleep with the lights on so "farmers" have learned to increase production by leaving the lights on. They give the hens food with additives to make the yolk have some color, and they give them other stuff to to keep them from getting ill in this very unnatural environment. The hens are stressed to the max.
Free range or even cage free birds get to walk around, interact with others and are less stressed.
Yard birds experience stress of a different nature: a hawk flies overhead, the dog gets too close, another hen takes the tasty beetle from you.
Eggs from the battery hens have more cholesterol because the hens are more stressed. I feel they are less nutritious as the hens are so depleted and fed chemical infused food to make up for it.
Yard birds eat a better diet of plants and bugs, worm, and lizards. I feed mine scratch grain and offer them lay crumbles and fresh water at all times. I can tell the eggs from the yard hens from the eggs from my speckled hens by the deep yellow/orange of the yolks.
The biggest difference is the freshness, I have used eggs in my baking that were still warm from the nest. (ran out of eggs and told the kids to run out and check the nest boxes).
Store bought eggs can be over a month old before they make it to the check out lane.

NotSoNiceBunny: RWDA: I channeled your chef-ness a bit, today. We get a 'vegitable bag' from the local bio store each week, and this one came with zucchini (sp?) which hubby really doesn't like. I grated one, with half a huge carrot, and a medium size onion. Then put all of them in a towel and squeezed them dry(er.) In a bowl, I combined a beaten egg, 2 tbls self-rising flour, salt and pepper, and then added in the veggies. Fried them on a medium-high heat in a thin layer of oil. Hubby bravely faced his icky food enemy and tried it, then finished a whole one, and before I knew it had eaten four! Yay! He even said I should make them more often, and possibly add them to hot breakfasts, too. So thanks for the inspiration ;) And good luck with your coffee date.

I have never, ever met anyone who didn't like veggie pancakes. I've done something similar with beans (I used mashed beans to bind the whole beans - all already cooked, of course) and actually got a bean hating friend to eat them. LOTS of them. My very unscientific and not at all formal formula is "grated or small food item" + binder of some sort + seasonings of choice + form into patties and pan fry = I will eat that, what you gonna eat? I don't care what it is, it just works every time. Now I want zucchini. I love the stuff. It's one of my favorites - and I'm the type who has never met a vegetable she didn't like, so that's huge when I can say it's a "favorite".

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Good afternoon Caturday folk.  Been an interesting week here at the B4 house.  First off, things are going well around here.  Job is great, fur babies are absolutely insane, and there is another "date" lined up next weekend.  Unfortunately, there was an accident the other day that scared the hell out of me, but everything is OK now.  Woke up Thursday morning, had to go to the bathroom, then suddenly found myself on the floor with a massive headache and face covered with blood.  Got myself cleaned up, ran myself through a quick stroke checklist, then woke up the neighbor and asked them to take me to the hospital.  Checked out OK, just a minor concussion.  Best guess is that I passed a kidney stone, which made me pass out, then fell and hit my head on something.  Luckily no stitches or major injury, just a really bad headache, and my left eye was swollen shut.  Guess after a few days of really good feelings, a little bit of clouds had to enter at some point.  I'm fine now, face is still a little sore, and I have a little fear of going in the bathroom, but no further issues.  Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Dude! I'm glad you're OK, but damn, that is not good! Make sure you are taking care of yourself nutritionally as well. That one's pretty simple and basic to good health, but it's one I think a lot of us are really bad at doing. I KNOW a couple of us are bad at it because we've landed in the hospital due to the whole "not taking care of yourself" thing. Hey! Maybe we should have a Caturday Insurance Plan. When one of us falls out or is just going through a rough patch in life (that's the "pre fall out stage", usually), a claim is filed (someone rats out the victim online, because we all seem to be really bad at asking for help when we need it, too) and a Caturday Emergency Response Team is dispatched with an emergency supply of nutritious snacks, beer and kittens. Hugs will be administered as needed and/or demanded. Ta-da! All bettah!

Got the ferals fed, almost done with my first pot of coffee so I'm starting to perk up a bit and Gogh helpfully rearranged the cupboard under my bathroom sink last night for me (he decided everything looked better on the floor), so I found a whole box of nail polish I forgot all about. Awesome! Nail polish is one of my big loves! Also got an email from an old friend in SoCal who is opening a second restaurant, this one in my area - would I like to meet for coffee and discuss seasonal menus and guests chef slots? *GASP!* Excited! I hope everyone's day turns out as awesome as mine is starting out to be!

Morning! Hope you all had a good evening.....I have a dr. appt. this morning, so I got to sleep in a bit.

Oh, noes! Are you OK? Is it just routine stuff, I hope? (Which is still stressful, IMO) I just went for my monthly "gimme mah drugs" appt Friday and they didn't even take blood this time. It took me longer to drive there than it did to get in back, talk to the doc (who called me "fat", like I didn't notice or something) and grab my scripts. Easiest appt EVER! I hope yours is like that, too. We all deserve a "good" visit every once in a while, don't we? YES. Yes we do.

[cmcforum.com image 339x385]

That reminds me of my favorite bumper sticker. "I may be fat, but you're ugly and I can diet"

//you probably shouldn't say that to your doctor if you want scripts :)

Hey Q_J! how are you weathering the storm today?

I visited her this afternoon.
The last couple of times, she was sleeping and wouldn't wake up, so I just sat with her.

Today, she was all ready for me to pack her up and take her home.
She practically begged me to get her out of there.
Then she offered me bribe$.
$erious bribe$.

I told her that I couldn't take her today because they were predicting bad weather (true)
and that I have a doctor appointment Monday as a followup to my misadventures
that put me in the hospital over Thanksgiving (also true) and that I didn't want to take her home
in time for him to put me back in the hospital (not very likely) and have her stuck there by herself.

We'll see how it works out over time.
Thanks for asking.

This was just from today!

Love brown eggs. The people next door to my niece have chickens and turkeys. They always have eggs for her family.

Do brown eggs taste different than white ones?  I've never had a brown one.

I've had brown eggs since I was a kid. They do taste a little different, I notice the difference when I eat white eggs, which is probably why I don't get eggs if I go out for breakfast. According to my Dr. brown eggs are supposed to better for your cholesterol too. I don't know if that's really true.

It's not:  shell color is only indicative of the breed of chicken that laid it (there are blue and purple eggs too).  More important is the way the chicken is raised and fed itself.

RWDA - I've mostly switched to healthy cooking & now pride myself on making healthy taste GREAT!  I figure if I can convince my guy and a 14 year old to eat healthy, I must be doing SOMETHING right!  Feel free to send me a message (my handle at yahoo dot com) and we can chat about it if you'd like :)  BTW, I do still use real butter, olive oil, avocado oil, real cheese, etc.  It's nice to know the real stuff is really a lot healthier for you!

This week has been rather stressful and busy.  I'm in the middle of planning for two classes I will help facilitate for work.  One starts next week, the other we're still developing and starts in April.  Also in the middle of tax hell for the business.  I've been doing well with putting stuff into Quickbooks, but I had some stuff entered into wrong categories and there are some things I need to add... We also talked to the bank yesterday about a new loan... that didn't quite go according to plan, but the advisor gave us some great advice, and if we work it right we won't need to get an extra loan after all.  Like she said, as far as the banks are concerned, we own our business free and clear (our loan is a private one with my mom), and she didn't think it would be a good idea to put all of it up just to gain (maybe) enough to help us for an extra 3ish months.  Now we have a lot of work to do!  It's right on the verge of taking off - starting to get accounts, our Etsy page is getting a lot more hits and we're starting to get some requests, we are getting repeat customers... looks like it's going in the right direction!

Ok, cats... Both of ours are happily napping at the moment.  Lars has suddenly become VERY interested in the water in the sink.  Not sure why that happened all of a sudden (he's 7, so he's seen it all before, right?!)  Cassie knows I'm stressed and being extra snuggly, which is lovely.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: jso2897: "He has a soft spot for rescue animals," she said.

Yeah, well, I think we've got it backwards. I think our "soft spots" are where our true strengths lie.

It really cracks me up when I see others call their cats 'Heathens'.  Louie and Hermie became the heathens the day they arrived in my house at the age of 6 weeks.  I know it is what Ellie called them.  And still calls them that.  Of course she puts a few dirty words in front of that.....

Bottom of page one, but wanted to share something that happened today at work.

I work as a mailman.. er, person.. er, I deliver normal mail for a living. Because I've been on the same route for over two years, I know many of the people and pets. In the last few months, a few of the indoor/outdoor cats on my route have taken to greeting me as I walk past their home and will walk with me on the part of my route that falls within their territory.

Today, one took it a bit further.

On my route, there is a house with a legally blind lady. She is usually very nice, has a wonderful yellow lab as a guide dog, and has an adorable cat who is blind in one eye. That cat decided I was another slave today: he mewed and mewed, then Mrowed (yes, loudly enough to earn that capitalization!) until I followed him back to his house and rang the doorbell. When his human answered the door I got to explain, in slightly broken Dutch, that her cat hijacked me to get the door open. She thought that it hilarious and thanked me for acting as a kitty delivery person, LOL!

I want to thank everyone for the condolences, You people are wonderfully caring.
When we were going through the boxes of photos at my dad's I came across this.  This is Casey, gone for many years now.  She was incredibly smart, and raised a litter of kittens once when their mother was killed.  She was a Gordon Setter, lived to be 17 I believe.  If I ever come across another one available for adoption, it will come home with me.

Good meowning, everybuddy! I been awake for a few hours already because I is excited for mah coffee meeting with LA Chef Woman today! Also, my doctor yesterday called me "fat". I know, dude! I'm not working like I used to work or riding a skateboard everywhere. Of COURSE I've gotten fat. So I guess I have to adjust my eating habits until I get healthy enough to run amok again. Dammit. I'll just look at this whole "healthy eating" thing as a new adventure. A forced adventure through vast fields of suckage. Instead of grilled cheese and pear sammich on cinnamon swirl bread for my breakfast, I guess I just eat the pear and some lowfat or nonfat yogurt or an egg or something. I'll figure it out. I'm not the smartest person ever, but I'm not a complete idiot either (I hope).

Everyone have a good day today, puh-leeeze! It should be good. The forecast calls for mewbies at Domari's place! I didn't see an update that there were more than the two. If there are, I look forward to seein' 'em!

If you or your furry lords and ladies (or hoomin loved ones) have been sickly - let us know you are all bettah, please! I know there are a more than a couple of us having issues of assorted types but I always confuse *who* is having *what* issue when I mean to ask how someone is doing. I can rattle it all off very effectively when I'm away from the keyboard, but right now - total blank. I am thinking and hoping and toesie crossing for everyone, even if I don't always say anything. Here, take this small token of my affection for my Caturday fambly (even you lurkers - we know you are there!).

And I'm pretty sure this fluffy chub weighs in around 30 pounds. He only gets a good 'bonking' maybe once a week.... I'm thinking I might try 2 flyswatters..... cut the handle down a bit (?)

Nexxi: Back home from Michigan, made the trip between snowstorms.  This is stepmom's cat, named Cat.  She showed up as an adult stray about 3 years ago, dad and stepmom took her in.  She's never presented them with kittens, so presumably a spayed pet that someone decided to dump on the farm.  I'm glad she's there now to keep my stepmom company, harder to be depressed with warm furry hugs all the time.
[i1193.photobucket.com image 850x637]

Good to know you made it home safe and sound. Just sorry for the reason you had to go.
It's nice to know that your stepmom has someone to keep her company. Cat gives her someone to talk to.
After my Dad passed away I used to drop Baby off at Mom's house on my way to work and pick her up on my way home. Mom didn't want a dog full time so that worked out well for some companionship it also gave me the ability to check up on Mom on a regular basis.

Welcome to Caturday. I have you favorited as 'knife girl' no doubt from some knife thread a couple/few weeks ago. What's up is I had a hellish week, but went in early today so my weekend started at 3 instead of 7. I am acquainting myself with a freshly purchased bottle of alcohol and will probably post something here on Fark tonite that I will regret tomorrow. The good news is that it won't be here on Caturday. Cheers!

Thank you! I am actually doing that booty wiggle happy display at random times because of this opportunity. Have been since I got the email (and no one is awake to witness it except the cats!) I KNOW it is awesome and I can hardly wait for our coffee meeting. She's got this beat up old car named "Mata Cari" that is really just a cloaking device for the most awesome stereo system I've ever seen in a car. So we'll talk food, nail polish, this opportunity for moi and then swap CDs. It will be fun, no matter what. Also, I've already rummaged through my steno pads and put my two latest in my backpack, so I'll have some personal props to share. I did some gastropub type stuff over the summer I want her to check out. It is a pretty solid testament to my ability to walk into any kitchen and work with what's already there - and come up with sensible, tasty and sometimes surprising menus. Surprising in a good way, not a "get me to the ER" way. lol!

lilyspad: Real Women Drink Akvavit: would I like to meet for coffee and discuss seasonal menus and guests chef slots? *GASP!* Excited! I hope everyone's day turns out as awesome as mine is starting out to be!

Don't mean to sound like I'm trying to discourage you in any way, but are you sure you're healthy enough to take that on right now? I know you're a chef, but don't forget that there is a lot of stress there, too! I'm sure you know your limits. That being said...Good Luck!!!! :D

I am not healthy enough right now and I know it. The exciting part is "guest chef slot" - so it would not be a permanent slot. It could conceivably turn into one if all parties were agreeable to it and I was physically capable of it, but it sounds like it would be a seasonal thing at this point. So I'd be given a month (or entire season) to take the helm. Design the menu, create the dishes, train the back of the house with cooking/plating my dishes, familiarize the front of the house with the dishes and then play (cook) until the next chef rotated through. Also, the place isn't open yet and she hasn't even signed a lease, so the earliest I'd be called to duty would be March or April - IF she's very fast (and unless she's changed a lot over the years, she is incredibly fast when she wants something done, usually by yesterday) and wants the first guest chef to roll in right at opening. This would give me plenty of time to either be well enough to handle it or politely decline and offer to do some consult work for her, when or if desired. Her finger is firmly on the pulse of Los Angeles, but SacTown is more like a vacation home for her. She's not very familiar with the regional culture. Having someone like me as her backup makes good sense, and that's probably why I was on her short list in the first place. I'm essentially a little Los Angeles/Sacramento hybrid. I knew being weird like that would come in handy some day!

Just peeked into the fridge to see what was available for dinner. I have ideas. Tasty, easy ideas. Will have to hit the market on my way back from the doctor's and pharmacy, but that's OK. I like lurking in produce departments of grocery stores. Those are some of my favorite places in the world. When the apocalypse comes, that's where I want to be hanging out - right by the avocados and artichokes. :-p

YAY for Caturday! w00t! I am all bettah from my sick *happy dance* and have a doctor's appointment tomorrow that is nothing but "here are your prescriptions, see you next month" - not even any vampire visit this time. (No offense, P V - you're all always very nice)

Also, forgive the horrid quality, but I now have a SECOND picture of mah Mr Van Gogh Beastie. He's afraid of my camera, but he's not afraid of my MP3 players. Must like death metal. Anyway, a couple of them have cameras built into them, so I got this:

i1084.photobucket.com

I see that view every night when I am in the kitchen. Gogh looking at Moo Kitty, who is staring into the house (and still refuses to come in the house, despite being invited, because "feral cats don't do 'inside', biatch" or whatever is going through her widdle kitteh head) and at least one other cat, lurking, waiting for Moo Kitty's kibble to hit the bowl so they can brawl for it (or just wait their turn, which is the usual choice for most cats). That blob further back is Yeti, who it turns out does have a home. I don't know who or where or anything, just know he showed up freshly brushed and last time I checked, there was no kitteh grooming salon in my shrubberies (but ya never know). He also won't let me touch him/her, so it's obviously someone he considers "family" who is brushing him. They're probably wondering why he's gaining weight.

I've got to go find food for myself now, so my doctor can once again remark this is the fattest he's ever seen me. I should make browned butter blondies. OM NOM NOM NOM! Or maybe a salad.....

Hope everyone's doing good this week and we have lots of glads, no sads!
