Real Women Drink Akvavit: Sickapie: Wow.  Now I feel bad.  :o(  Makes sense tho re: the battery hens.  Poor things.

We passed a law about how chickens are treated in Cali a couple years back and said they need more room (among other things). Some people were like "OMG! Eggs will totally go up in price!" and I was like "OMG! I totally don't care!" and voted for it. There was some actual logic behind my "screw you" to those types, but I got tired of repeating myself. lol

good Meowning! hey lilyspad glad to hear your appt. is for routine stuff..although high b.p. is nothing to play with. I think you need a stress ball to carry at work.

RWDA i do not know if this will help you or not..but I find that soup makes a good filler. And if you load it with veggies it keeps you full. Also if you are hungry for something, try having a small portion. It is not about denial per se, its portion control. ( weight watcher)

That will help me, and Food Maxx had the Progresso Light soups on sale last week. Everyone was sick, so I bought a bunch of them. Wish I had bought more now, because a couple of them are quite tasty. I knew I had gotten quite fat, but didn't realize HOW fat until the doctor weighed me. OMFGs!!! Are you kidding me? How does that even happen?!? Oh, yeah. No "regular" job (I am high energy at work, always), not riding a skateboard for primary transportation anymore and failed to change my eating habits to reflect my much lower activity levels. That could have a bit to do with it. For me, it's going to be about controlling the amount of "bad" food I eat, because there is no "bad" food to me, only poorly prepared food and I rarely have that problem. So now I have to watch fat content, total calorie intake vs activity levels and blah blah blah. Major suckage, dude.

I am a bit ahead of the curve, though. I know the THEORY behind losing weight (but totally welcome any reminders and tips! gimme gimme gimme!) so I stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies, cuz I love them anyway. The challenge is now to not turn them all into pie or sammiches (or a sammich with pie for dessert). I can KILL a massive salad and enjoy it, so I just have to pay attention to what I'm putting on my greens. (It's not usually salad dressing that's the problem for me in that department - it's everything else) It's really just going to be about stepping away from the butter dish and the cheese drawer and then being mindful of what I'm shoveling in my gaping maw by not eating in front of my computer and other "pay attention, stupid" strategies. Then walking, daily, for at least 20 minutes to start. I am not well enough for the skateboard park or even to simply go riding, but hopefully that will change and then I'll lose it all very quickly when combined with the dietary changes.

I just cut up some jicama to take the place of tater chips (a huge weakness for me) for lunch, so that will get some Tajin on it and be delicious. I also just cleaned some radishes, but that made me miss my grandma really bad because we used to snack on radishes and celery and cucumber sticks together and watch game shows all the time, so I walked away from the kitchen for now. Kitchens are supposed to be happy places, not "am I starting to cry? I do not cry." places (unless you're cutting onions).

I eat salads without grumbling, but I really began to favor them as an outright meal substitute when the hubby started putting shredded cheese and crumbled bacon on his. (The bagged stuff from Costco, not the nasty fake-on bits!) Not much, mind you, but just enough for a bit more flavor. I'm trying to find salad dressings that I like that are low-calorie, but in the meantime I'm using a really good buttermilk ranch sparingly. I don't like Italian-style or French dressings AT ALL. At least I'm trying, I guess.

RWDA - I saw a great sammich idea the other day...cut a cucumber in half, put your meats, veggies, etc on one half then put the other half on top. It's basically a sammich with a cucumber for the bread. Haven't tried it yet, but it looked awesome.

My grandma loved, loved, loved her fresh fruits and veggies. After a lifetime of living somewhere with a very short growing season where stuff we get here year round - and it's good quality stuff! - is a seasonal treat and very expensive, she was like a kid in a candy store after somewhat getting over the horror of being dumped in California. Those jokes about salt and pepper being "heavy seasoning" to a Norwegian are not too far off, though. She did not like things like Ranch salad dressing. She wanted it simple and rather bland (IMO). What I would do so we would both eat it (I love BIG flavors) is take all of the salad vegetation except the greens and chop it up like a chopped salad kind of thing and then sprinkle on a bit of salt, some garlic powder, some paprika and a bit of whatever dried herbs or other spices I thought sounded good with what was on my cutting board and add it to the veggies. Park it in the fridge for a couple of hours so the flavors can marry and have delicious juice babbies and BOOM! instant salad dressing without the dressing when you toss it with the greens later. She loved that. A lot. I also used different styles of vinegar and would infuse them with herbs (or buy herb infused, but your own is always better if you have space and time for it, of course) and when we wanted salad, whisk it in a bowl with just the lightest touch of something like honey or agave syrup to mellow it out and balance the flavors and maybe a touch of mustard (depending on salad type) to make an oil free vinaigrette. Just decide on your flavor profile and play mad scientist with it. If you start with small batches, even if it's terrible the first couple runs you're not really out a lot of money when you do it yourself.

That is a GREAT idea! I should try that with zucchini. Jicama! I can quick blanch some jicama to make it a bit flexible and use it like a little wrap!

I know that sort of thing is done with lettuce, but that's got limited appeal to me. I never thought to use other stuff (and I am a HUGE carbo loader, so that will be an issue for me), so THANKS!

Real Women Drink Akvavit: I am also in the process of relearning how to eat. The Dr.'s best guess as to why I got so severely anemic is that I may have had some small bleeds in my stomach but my food intake was so nutritionally deficient my body couldn't make it up. I won't go into details here, but the combination of bad back/knees, super low energy, and depression kept me from the grocery. By the end I was eating pretty much just fried eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches because I could quickly pick up the stuff at the gas station. I also managed to give myself diabetes now too :(

Regarding egg shell color. My niece did a 4-H project and raised a couple of chickens. She had a couple of Rhode Island Reds (one of the most popular brown egg layers) but as an experiment she also got a couple of Leghorns (the most popular white egg layer). When the eggs started coming, they tried them side by side and saw no difference in taste, size of yolk, etc. between the colors. Obviously, they could not test them nutritionally. Whether you get brown or white eggs at the grocery depends on region. East coast seems to be exclusively brown while here in the North Central we get white only. It really just depends on what breed of chicken was common.

Oh, man! I was told I was "almost pre-diabetic" after my last round of blood work, but didn't take it as seriously as I should. I've got to be careful and keep an eye on that too, I guess. Especially since I do love my bread and cookies so much. I just realized I have no protein on my breakfast plate but don't want to give up half my double fiber toast to get a hard boiled egg in there. I guess that would make a good snack or I can add it to my lunch and adjust elsewhere. *sigh* I'll get better at this over time. Still, I have a double fiber english muffin, toasted and smeared with fresh avocado (a half of a very, very small avocado) instead of butter, a small pear cored and sliced, several jicama sticks and Tajin (low sodium variety) and a bit of Hawaiian Black Lava salt (Ha! Take THAT, low sodium Tajin!!!) on everything, because it is yummy. Also, moar coffee, but with sugar free Salted Caramel Torani instead of creamer, because much less calories. I'm well under 400 calories for breakfast. Probably in the low 300's, will add it all up when I log it later.

As someone who gained a ton of weight because I have chronic pain (low energy, not a whole lot of exercise, lots of "easy" food), I've had AMAZING luck with a food tracker on my phone called "My Fitness Pal" - It's free and it allows you to add your own recipes to figure out calories in addition to tons of food it already has logged in it.  It also allows you to keep track of your exercise and even water intake!  Basically you put in your current weight, your typical level of movement, and your goal weight so it can calculate the number of calories you should try to stick with.  It recalculates every 10-15 lbs lost.  By "amazing" luck, I mean I lost 65 lbs in about a year and a half w/o really exercising a whole lot more, so just with watching what I was eating.  Eggs are a great source of protein, as are most kinds of nuts.  They have good stuffs in them, so you don't need to cut them out at all.  It's all about portions.  I still have desserts, but I only eat them when I've had a day with a lot of exercise to even it out.  I haven't actually cut out anything, just changed how much and how it's prepared.  I even figured out meal calories at places we tend to go to eat out so I know what I can and can't eat if we go out.  It's easier to go in knowing what you will order!  If we go somewhere with ginormous portions, I make sure to cut it in half (or thirds in some places) before I start to eat, so I know when to start.  If it's hard for you to stop, I've seen the suggestion to put the part you don't want to eat in the doggie bag BEFORE you start eating so it's not a temptation.  Now I physically can't eat more than a tad over a normal portion size because my tummy isn't super stretched out anymore.  I also am very careful and eat slow, which allows my brain to keep track of how full I am, though I will admit the slow eating is because if I don't, I get food stuck in my esophagus... really sucks!  Drinking lotses of water also helps you lose faster.  I'm also doing very gentle yoga - started with a yoga/pilates dvd that was designed for people with chronic pain & slowly started adding new poses from there (need to get back into that...)

Ok, Cassie is driving me insane because it's gooshies time, dammit!  I'm also writing a flipping book... sorry.

I have an autoimmune thingie that plagues me with chronic pain as well, and when my other issues flare up, so does the pain (of course), which cuts down on my normal BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE ZOOOOOM!!! levels of hyper fun. I would LOVE to know the name of the DVD ya got, just so I can start moving myself again. I tend to go from 0-elbentybillion, and I simply cannot do that right now. I hurted myself even playing Dance Dance Revolution (should probably not mute it and do the moves double time to black metal instead, but ya know, I'm so grim and kvlt and whatnot *snert*). That makes me sad, because that kind of sudden explosion of movement and the sheer joy of it is very much ME. I just am not able right now without dire consequences - if I can do it at all - and the result has been a horrid cycle of even less energy, more pain and now thinking of changing my name to Shamu.

I mindlessly ate two cookies (Chips Ahoy - damn your deliciousness and proximity to my computer!), but I moved them to the stairs so my son would take them with him and then I was also bad because the Maven window is open at Julep and I upgraded. But really? How could I not? Look at it! I mean, just look at the pretties! Now I've got to make some more money either by picking up a work or hitting Amazon MTurk for a day so I don't screw my entire budget for the month with my nail polish and cosmetic obsession. I am the epitome of poor impulse control - and refuse to correct my impulsiveness by changing my mind on that Juelp Ultimate upgrade for February. but but but! they're pretty....

The thing I like about this DVD is that there are 4 people doing varying difficulty levels (from seated to full yoga pose).  The lady who does the talking is annoying as hell, but once you learn the poses/exercises, you can mute her or write them down like I did.  I started by following the DVD completely, moving up through the difficulty levels, and then I wrote down all of the exercises so I could do extra reps/sets.  The DVD is $30, though... Might be able to find it somewhere for cheaper or at a library or something?  I dunno.  I then went online and found some gentle poses to add in... but I warn you... online's version of "easy" or "gentle" yoga is waaaaaaaaaaay harder than I was able to do.  I'm too scared to even look at what they consider to be "advanced" because it might make me break just watching. Lol!  Here's the link to where I bought mine:   http://www.myalgia.com/VIDEOS/Pilates_Yoga_B_info.htm and there's a linkie toward the bottom to take you to the order form.  They don't require any extra stuffs except a chair if you're going to do the poses seated.  I do have a yoga mat, so it's nice to use that for some of the poses - Less cat fur stuck to me that way.  Lars LOVES it when the yoga mat comes out.  He "helps" me do my yoga/pilates :)  Maybe Gogh will help you, too!

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Good afternoon Caturday folk.  Been an interesting week here at the B4 house.  First off, things are going well around here.  Job is great, fur babies are absolutely insane, and there is another "date" lined up next weekend.  Unfortunately, there was an accident the other day that scared the hell out of me, but everything is OK now.  Woke up Thursday morning, had to go to the bathroom, then suddenly found myself on the floor with a massive headache and face covered with blood.  Got myself cleaned up, ran myself through a quick stroke checklist, then woke up the neighbor and asked them to take me to the hospital.  Checked out OK, just a minor concussion.  Best guess is that I passed a kidney stone, which made me pass out, then fell and hit my head on something.  Luckily no stitches or major injury, just a really bad headache, and my left eye was swollen shut.  Guess after a few days of really good feelings, a little bit of clouds had to enter at some point.  I'm fine now, face is still a little sore, and I have a little fear of going in the bathroom, but no further issues.  Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Here's to wishing you better health.  I would think that passing a kidney stone would be so massively painful that you would remember it happening before you passed out?  In any event, keep after the docs if you continue to have blackouts.  Epilepsy, strokes and heart attacks can all give you the symptoms you described, and none of them should be taken litely!

Real Women Drink Akvavit: lilyspad: [i.imgur.com image 640x640]
Morning! Hope you all had a good evening.....I have a dr. appt. this morning, so I got to sleep in a bit.

Oh, noes! Are you OK? Is it just routine stuff, I hope? (Which is still stressful, IMO) I just went for my monthly "gimme mah drugs" appt Friday and they didn't even take blood this time. It took me longer to drive there than it did to get in back, talk to the doc (who called me "fat", like I didn't notice or something) and grab my scripts. Easiest appt EVER! I hope yours is like that, too. We all deserve a "good" visit every once in a while, don't we? YES. Yes we do.

That reminds me of my favorite bumper sticker. "I may be fat, but you're ugly and I can diet"

//you probably shouldn't say that to your doctor if you want scripts :)
