iBette: Real Women Drink Akvavit: NotSoNiceBunny: RWDA: I channeled your chef-ness a bit, today...I cook zucchini all the time.  Usually sauteed in OO with a little sliced onion, garlic, S&P, oregano and/or basil with muenster or havarti melted on top.  Mister never had zucchini this way, never cared much for it, but now requests it frequently.[i843.photobucket.com image 275x300]

I actually like cubing up some zucchini and roasting it at fairly high heat, tossed with a little OO so it *almost* caramelizes. While that's roasting away in the oven, getting nice and browned up in some spots and yummy, I saute some diced mushrooms, peeled and diced Roma tomatoes, diced onion (cubes! everything will be in cubes!!! *cackles*) with some fresh chopped garlic in a bit of OO, cook up some pasta (whatever I have on hand will do), deglaze the saute pan with just a *tiny* bit of the cooking water (to release the fond AND for the starch) and then mix it all together and top with a few shavings of fresh parm and fresh herbs of choice - very tasty. It's like pasta primavera, without the sauce. It's probably what pasta primavera was before people started adding cream or tomato sauce or tons of cheese - all about the flavorful veggies and the pasta. You've just got your veggies and pasta and juuuuuust enough liquid involved after the mushrooms and tomatoes give up theirs and it evaporates off to bring it all together into a delicious and fresh and toasty lunch.

During my coffee meeting yesterday, we marveled at how so many people out there are so good at throwing food together to get different tasting food, but still think they need a recipe for something other than baking (which you need to at least know what everything in the baked good recipe *does* for the finished product and your proportions memorized or written down or whatever). She says if one of us ever wins the lottery, we should make our own cheesy cable TV show where we rampage a neighborhood, knocking on doors, to see who will let us in their house to cook for them using only what they already have on hand. Kind of a reminder that a recipe is great for inspiration and fancy ingredients can be fun, but that the real creative work of turning simple survival dining into a tasty and enjoyable meal comes from the person with the saute pan (or casserole dish or can opener - whatever floats yer goat). We were pretty sure someone had already done it, but couldn't think of who or when. Also, thought it was funny how that would be creepy to have happen to you if TV cameras were NOT somehow involved. It would be FUN.

BTW, if you guys don't have it, probably only because you have never heard of it, I highly recommend the book The Flavor Bible. It is not recipes, just lists of herbs and spices and ingredients that "go" together in wonderful ways. While many of them are very intuitive (who really has to be told basil and tomatoes are in love with each other?), it is a good reminder for things you don't use as often AND you can cross reference if you need to or wish to and end up with combinations you may not have thought of before. It's a book I use all the time, even after years of cooking, because while you may not need a recipe to cook them you can always use a bit of a nudge when you're staring at a pile of brussel sprouts and trying to think of something to do with them that doesn't involve garlic butter.

OMGs! So cute! Yet will grow up to be deadlier than a lion (especially to German tourists, for some bizarre reason. GERMANS, do NOT try to pet the hippo!)

Also, Aaron Sanchez ain't lying when he talks about Herdez on the TV. If I don't feel like making it, I will grab a can of the Herdez stuff and it is nearly as good. HUGE time saver, very reasonably priced and definitely worth every penny.

Those ARE cool! Now that we got the inside covered, check THESE out! Catios! I LOVE the top one, but really don't have the money for something like that. My whole back yard is the "catio" because of where the house is located (totally safe for Gogh, 'cept for other critters, but he runs/hides from them), but it would still be awesome to have the money to put together a couple of the fancy catios they have on their page. Yes, I WOULD build a catio instead of buy a fancy car, too. Jackson Galaxy would be so proud...

This is a post in apology..

I haven't even begun to look at the thread..but I *will* read through the whole thing..

I am not even 'late to the party,' I missed the party completely..

This post is to Leepj who, last week, gifted me a month of TF with the stated reason of "So you can join in on Caturday threads on Thursday night.."  That's it..the whole reason..so simple and such a nice gift/gesture..

Unfortunately, I work 12-hour overnight staggered shifts..this month, I'm on weeknights..after next week, I'll be on weekend nights..and able to be here early, with half my gift intact..

My cheers to those with happy-cat stories..and those who welcomed new fur-kids into their families..  My deep condolences to those who lost long-time companions..I don't have to RTFT to say that, losses are ongoing and a constant part of Caturday..  There's one hell of an awesome support group, here..

That all said, see you all..as an early participant..in a week or two..  Have a great week, everyone..!

I love eggs benedict, but the sauce is a no-no right now for my fat ass, so I put the ranchera on the muffin instead. I have some avocados sitting on the counter to get ripe so I can use those later as well. I've always loved avocado as a butter or mayo substitute on sammiches. Also learned by reading the packages that the double fiber english muffins have less calories than the regular ol' whole wheat variety. They're also tasty.

Yeah, big glass of water. For some bizarre reason my doctor disapproves of me taking my meds with snaps of akvavit or vodka or whatever. Zima I don't think they make anymore. That was my mom's favorite treat back in the day. (My dad preferred Rumpleminz)

BTW, if you guys have never tried this stuff
www.bradlaughs.com
you need to try it. I actually had someone tell me they didn't like it once. I did not know how to even look at them after that. How can anyone not like Tajin chile y limon salsa en polvo??? I tried to kick him out of California, but I guess I'm not allowed to do that. I SHOULD be! Someone's got to guard our borders and I think it should be me. Yup.

It was more luck than anything, I came home from work and it was still light out. I leave for work in the dark and usually come home after dark too. I got home in time to notice that Castle has LOST HUGE PATCHES OF HAIR OFF HIS BACK! He was fully furred on Wednesday, I was shocked to see him like that.  I got the camera out to get some pictures so I could send them to my friend but the horses had other ideas. They ran circles around me, mad, because I usually turn them out if it is still light when I get home on Saturday. They raised up a lot of dust and the setting sun was so nice I got a few glamor shots with my cheap little pawn shop camera.
I took the big picture of them and split it so each could show off. I don't know much about photography so I can't decide which I like better, two separate pictures or the one with both horses.

I think Castle has rain rot. I hope that is all that is the matter. It is over 70 today so I gave him a bath with iodine soap. The farrier is going to be here on Wednesday and I will ask her about the various things horses get in this part of the country. He is not uncomfortable at all and there is no sign of it on Mountain.

While I was trying to get pictures of Castle, Mountain came up behind me and nipped me on the tush. Little stinker was jealous and wanted to play. He did not bite down, and I just felt a tug on my jeans but I had to let him know that I was off limits as a toy. I am not as solid as a horse and he is not allowed to treat me like that.

I like both the split up shots and the together shots.  And the bite on the butt makes me laugh.

Reminds me of the time that my cat from hell, Misty, bit my dad on the butt.  Dad got bit so many times by Misty.  Misty..well he really only liked me (and that was sometimes questionable...I got bit many times, majorly bad bite).  Dad always wanted to pet Misty and would say 'see he likes me', just before Misty bit.  One bite was bad, Mom made Dad go to the doctor...the doctor looked and said 'is the cat alive'...well, yeah, 'you will live'.

Snow Day

I sit here,
Warm and snug.

I listen to the wind howl,
Like a pack of hounds.

Chasing the fox,
And losing the scent.

I can feel the wind push
Against the house,

Demanding entrance.
Only to be denied.

I curl tighter.
Snuggle deeply.

Sigh.

A purr rumbles
Through my being.

It resonates and joins,
The beating,

Of my loved ones heart.

Together,
We are comfort,
Warmth.

Seperate,
Yet joined.

An invisible bond.
Stretching beyond,
The here and now.

Infinite.
Wonder.

Cat.

Oh, hey - did josmonkeys (IIRC) ever get the skwerl outta the house or is there a rental agreement for the top shelf in place now? Cuz it looked kinda comfy up there.

Following a comic chase scene last Caturday, my 10-year-old cat. Penny ended up banishing teh skwerl to the basement. He managed to snitch another cracker w/o tripping the trap overnight on Sat/Sun. We have had no sightings since. Penny and I thought we heard it on Wednesday. I got a different trap with a lighter trip touch on Friday, but no action on that front yet. Farker bz922x, who is my husband, banged around the basement this morning to no avail. If there's no action by Thursday, I'll reopen the basement to the cats, and go hunting with Penny.
