this is one of my favorite paintings.  I like to think that the impressionist artists were as myopic as I am..that is what the world looks like to me minus glasses.
Of course Calvin and Hobbes just add their own little bit to the art.  (I love how they show up in the best places!!!!)

I do suffer from low blood pressure, and do get dizzy sometimes when I stand up too quickly, so it was possibly that as well.  But everything is fine now, and the bruising should go away soon, so happy with that as well.

Probably should have.  Problem is that the nearest hospital is 40 miles away.  I gave myself a quick stroke check and made sure I was aware of what was happening before deciding to have someone take me.  I figure I'm becoming more mature in that before, I would have taken myself, but not this time.

NotSoNiceBunny: RWDA: I channeled your chef-ness a bit, today. We get a 'vegitable bag' from the local bio store each week, and this one came with zucchini (sp?) which hubby really doesn't like. I grated one, with half a huge carrot, and a medium size onion. Then put all of them in a towel and squeezed them dry(er.) In a bowl, I combined a beaten egg, 2 tbls self-rising flour, salt and pepper, and then added in the veggies. Fried them on a medium-high heat in a thin layer of oil. Hubby bravely faced his icky food enemy and tried it, then finished a whole one, and before I knew it had eaten four! Yay! He even said I should make them more often, and possibly add them to hot breakfasts, too. So thanks for the inspiration ;) And good luck with your coffee date.

I have never, ever met anyone who didn't like veggie pancakes. I've done something similar with beans (I used mashed beans to bind the whole beans - all already cooked, of course) and actually got a bean hating friend to eat them. LOTS of them. My very unscientific and not at all formal formula is "grated or small food item" + binder of some sort + seasonings of choice + form into patties and pan fry = I will eat that, what you gonna eat? I don't care what it is, it just works every time. Now I want zucchini. I love the stuff. It's one of my favorites - and I'm the type who has never met a vegetable she didn't like, so that's huge when I can say it's a "favorite".

Brian Blessed's Bastard Boy: Good afternoon Caturday folk.  Been an interesting week here at the B4 house.  First off, things are going well around here.  Job is great, fur babies are absolutely insane, and there is another "date" lined up next weekend.  Unfortunately, there was an accident the other day that scared the hell out of me, but everything is OK now.  Woke up Thursday morning, had to go to the bathroom, then suddenly found myself on the floor with a massive headache and face covered with blood.  Got myself cleaned up, ran myself through a quick stroke checklist, then woke up the neighbor and asked them to take me to the hospital.  Checked out OK, just a minor concussion.  Best guess is that I passed a kidney stone, which made me pass out, then fell and hit my head on something.  Luckily no stitches or major injury, just a really bad headache, and my left eye was swollen shut.  Guess after a few days of really good feelings, a little bit of clouds had to enter at some point.  I'm fine now, face is still a little sore, and I have a little fear of going in the bathroom, but no further issues.  Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Dude! I'm glad you're OK, but damn, that is not good! Make sure you are taking care of yourself nutritionally as well. That one's pretty simple and basic to good health, but it's one I think a lot of us are really bad at doing. I KNOW a couple of us are bad at it because we've landed in the hospital due to the whole "not taking care of yourself" thing. Hey! Maybe we should have a Caturday Insurance Plan. When one of us falls out or is just going through a rough patch in life (that's the "pre fall out stage", usually), a claim is filed (someone rats out the victim online, because we all seem to be really bad at asking for help when we need it, too) and a Caturday Emergency Response Team is dispatched with an emergency supply of nutritious snacks, beer and kittens. Hugs will be administered as needed and/or demanded. Ta-da! All bettah!

I guess he will just have to resign himself to some indoor activities. Like chasing the treats I throwto him..ahh..cat skidding on hardwood floors....at least he hasn't hit any walls...

Before I go catching up with the thread (and eating my VERY not on my diet dinner, so first day on that is a total bust, ain't it?), I should probably let ya curious types know about my coffee meeting.

So, the concept is this - the regular/usual daily service will have a core menu of things always available, with seasonal offerings expanding it a bit and monthly "specials" designed by a guest chef also available. They will have a "Chef's Table Club" or something similar - not yet named - that once a month will be a prix fixe eight to ten course menu by that month's guest chef. If you are in this club, you have paid $$$ in advance, get a discount on the prix fixe offering and have the opportunity to reserve your spot a full week before reservations are open for anyone else. This "guided dining experience" will be two nights only and will be very, very fancy, small plate versions of what the guest chef will design for their month on the menu. They are like a formal introduction to the flavors and ingredients the chef will be using on their less formal menu, as well as an introduction to the chef's cooking style. Following that OK? Good. Each seasonal menu will therefore have three special menus to draw from, and items from each chef's creations will be placed on the seasonal menu for the run of that season. So we chart out our menu in writing in advance (of course) and then swap menu ideas and conspire with the other chefs for that season to create the seasonal menu as a team (using email, notes on the refrigerator, singing telegram, pony express or whatever). We need to be aware of the core menu, but will have no impact on it. The core menu will consist of the usual suspects - steaks, chickens, shrimps, etc. Boring, but good standby items all menus should have, especially fancy pants and jacket required places. The big draw for the restaurant will be the novelty of the constantly rotating guest chefs and therefore constantly rotating cooking styles and favored flavor profiles. So my CalMex with a Nordic twist one month (because shut up and eat it, that's why) and someone else's Contemporary French Provincial the next and then maybe a little jaunt through India with a stop in Sonoma the next couple months. Food will be seasonal and locally sourced. I wanted October, but was told "no" (meanie!!!) so I am going to do my research about what will be fresh and happy in a 100 mile radius of here at different times of the year and write up a menu for June (the earliest I feel comfortable committing to this) and one for September (my first choice if I'm told I get to choose one). I don't want a big holiday month and I love everything about autumn, including the food, so I'm really going to push for getting September, for sure. even if she wants me to do June. I will totally take both if that's how it turns out.

So, it went well! I just need to do some studying up to refresh my memory about what is coming out of the fields when and then flip through my notebooks for ideas, write out my proposed menu (fancy version and not quite so fancy versions) and then zip them out to her, see what she says. Just having the opportunity is a huge honor for me, even if she doesn't go with either of my menus. It's just the being asked part that's blowing my mind. I'm usually a step below that level of "high end" cooking even when I was working at a very high end restaurant. I don't think of myself as "that kind of chef", but apparently some people do.

It's actually a little scary, too. lol!

OK, have a cat while I catch up on the thread!

His fur really explodes into blueness when I use a flash to take his picture. That's one of the reasons I don't have as many good ones of him as I do the other boys, the only way I can get a good shot is with natural lighting.

Try using bounce flash if your camera supports an external flash.

So, the concept is this -

There is a place up here in Portland, OR that does something similar. Not so much guest chef, but every month they have a "special" seasonal menu with wine pairings that you can reserve. I think they do a few days, perhaps a week or so? But its kind of the same concept - local, seasonal food in new creative ways, and their thing is to pair it with wines during the meal. We've wanted to try to go to one, but just haven't done it yet.

Anyway, the idea sounds neat and I know myself would enjoy looking forward to a new monthly creation to try out and would bring us back more often to check it out. Not in your area, but still :)
