i think lung lavage has been around for a while. in fact there's a scene in ron howard's "rush" in which nikki lauda gets his lungs washed. it's pretty horrific.

This sounds repulsive. Would it stop cancer with the cleaning of the lungs?

I guess it might have some positive influence but I doubt it would help much.  And it's not like you'd want to endure repeated treatments.

My layman's opinion is that you absorb and metabolize most of the carcinogens during the act of smoking and shortly after.  Residual gunk in your lungs isn't good for you of course, but I think most of the carcinogenic damage is already done.

When I quit (15 year habit), about 3 weeks into it one evening I'm in the shower and I start coughing really hard. Only to see for a split second this onyx black luge of tar go down the drain. I can only imagine what the inside of a life long smoker can look like.

I had a feeling that was coming.  No heeling required.  As for the life long smokers?  They're gonna beef a baby's sized arm luge of tar out of their mouths that will have to be heeled down the drain.

Well good for you on quitting. I quit cold turkey about 6 months ago. Had a headache and was biatchy for about 2 days, I think people overthink the quitting thing with gum and patches and pills and vapes and make it worse than it is.

must be done in a specialty clinic with a team that includes not only a surgeon but a radiologist, anesthesiologist and pathologist.

Well, that sounds pretty hellish. Gotta wonder how temporary the results are.

You know what would be funny? Switch the hose that runs to the fluid used for the flushing, and stick it in a big jar of mayonnaise.

Thanks.  It wasn't even about my health.  I loved to smoke, it just got out of my price range.  I hear in NYC it's like 10 bucks a pack.  I don't know how some people can afford it.  That and really, not smoking is the new smoking.

I'm all fine and healthy, I was enjoying a fine cigar when I got the news that dad has stage 4 lung cancer, I just didnt feel like finishing my smoke after that.

2014-01-16 05:11:48 PM
More than 10 years ago, I heard that a friend of a friend's dad had his lungs cleaned out via suction of some kind so that he could keep smoking and maintain the fullest lung capacity possible. Obviously a very optional, probably very expensive procedure, but if you're dedicated to smoking, makes sense to clean out the system every so often if you can afford it and are willing to risk it. I've wished I could do it more than once.

Six days clean. Been white-knuckling most of January. Some days it is WAY easier than others.

2014-01-16 05:14:57 PM
Epperson choked up when he talked about his family.

Sounds like he needs to only talk about friends.

I'm just sayin'...

I survived a thoracotomy, so to me the guy in the article's quite the wuss.

Quit in 2006.  Still get urges.  The worst is DREAMING that you're smoking, enjoying it thoroughly, and then waking up and feeling guilty about it.

When I am around someone who is a smoker, I'm horrified that I walked around reeking that way!

I quit 20 yrs ago when smokes became $1/pack. I still get urges. Especially after some physical labor, when I grab a beer and sit down. But I've saved a ton o' money...and my life. A day at a time, dude. I've heard it's tougher for women. My Nancy quit for three years during cancer treatments, then stepped out on the porch with a friend and shared a butt. She went 2 pks/day almost immediately. Crazy. She's still smoking today

/she must like the biatchin' about $65 a week

I was lucky enough to have access to a sauna, so I went and took one each day for the first 3 days. You sweat out a lot of the nicotine and it just makes the whole process that much better. Plus who doesn't love a sauna?

I quit about 7 or 8 years ago. Cold turkey. It was brutal at first, but I got through it. Every once in a while I'll get a very slight craving for a cigarette, but nothing that can't be ignored. What's nice is that I can walk up a hill without wheezing like an old goat.
