Hey everyone - we're working with Mike Phirman (Fark handle: Phirm) and Ora.tv on a Fark Video project.  Unlike last time around, we've been working with TotalFarkers as a test group for input on how to make the show better.  This is the first pilot ep we've mainpaged, and we're interested in your input

Ps I'm not sure how much more lame that paragraph could have sounded, but we really do want to hear your input J

Pss among many of the things mentioned by TFers, we're tweaking camera angles, screen images, and removing topic tags from the intro that don't actually appear on Fark

Objectively,
Mike is good, likeable and not too arrogant.
Visually good, I like the overlay technique.
Script is a bit bland.  Could be punchier, more sarcastic and witty.  More Talk Soup.
Showing top 3 comments was the best part.

Kinda commercially. Which is fine if you wanted to make a commercial. Cute girl.

Mark is a very nice man.

He (and my wife) have no sense of smell.

They are anosmic.

The girl is nice to watch. Phirm's delivery is great.

"I've been married for 11 potatoes" made me spit up my coffee.

I always thought this is the format the video project should have gone in the first place because the thing that is great about Fark is the user contributed har-hars.

I liked it.  Of course I didn't love it because my screamingly hilarious recycled vaudeville and ham-fisted barely cogent and feebly executed Paintshoops weren't featured, but hey, there's always the next video.

Having survived "FarkTV" I have to say that this shows a lot of promise.  The interaction between Phirm and the girl needs to be snappier, though.

i liked the upbeat style, and haven't seen the first two pilots yet, but with mike standing up and the shots changing and him bouncing in and out i found it difficult to take in the content when it got a bit technical. it was like it was a bit too much information to take in and a bit too fast for me what with what was going on in screen. i think the fast bouncy delivery might work for a shorter clip when you've got less overall to process and will be like "wtf?" anyway. i guess you went for the presentation style because you don't want it being dull.

/i am not an expert in this kind of thing by a long shot, so i admit i don't really know what i'm talking about

//what is the purpose / audience / where will it be shown, etc?

2014-01-16 02:08:22 PM
It's basically an ad for Fark.  Is that the intention?  Where are these going to be shown?  Please don't get into the whole "10 weird things... " buzzfeed paid blogging crap.  That bs needs to die

2014-01-16 02:10:30 PM
Because you asked...

It has a lot of potential and the host is a good choice. I like how a Fark thread is referenced.

That part when it quickly cuts to a movie scene, made me wanting more of those fast cuts/quicker rhythm for the whole thing.
Needs to be catered more to the ADD crowd, aka the entire internet.

btw: does Fark own this (inactive) YouTube channel?
http://www.youtube.com/user/Fark/about

If not, oerhaps you could *cough* acquire it.. might be a better place to post the vids/gain subscribers.
/No offense to ora.tv's YT channel, just sayin'

2014-01-16 02:14:14 PM
Top comments were a nice touch. It's a little Talk Soup like some said, which is neither bad nor great. Seems like the delivery is a bit dated and the friendliness is too contrived, especially for such a cynical place like Fark. Nice production quality, graphics, and editing. Needs more... uh... zazz. If only I weren't on my phone and could link Murderface saying that.

It's your Fark and you can Fark if you want to.

I think the presenter should be off to the side, an upside down floating head, a "The Rock" angled head, a swirling-down-the-toilet head around the edges...anything to give more room for content.

Additionally, you might play up the meme side of Fark with things like  Jenny McCarthy and The Rock and other memes making appearances over the video.  A Jenny McCarthy meme saying she has plenty of sex might have helped the presenter...

I don't know. Good luck.

o.k. i've watched it twice now.

It wasn't as good as the Jack Horkheimer show Star Gazers but it wasn't worse.

the format is acceptable, the subject matter seemed a like you used the dart board method (although i'll admit it came together better the second time). I liked Phirman, the hot chick needs to lighten up on the wardrobe.

2014-01-16 02:23:50 PM
as said, the comments are what makes Fark Fark, so maybe have a random post that didn't win a category in the videos as well. It could be the super serious on topic TL;DR guy or the troll that posts pure vitriol and you feel a bit sick after reading it.

Or course everybody's favorite, the "Who?" guy from the entertainment tab.

*shrugs*

2014-01-16 02:24:43 PM
I didn't feel very strongly about it one way or the other. In some senses, that's a vast improvement from the burning hatred I felt for your last video venture. On the other hand, this has far less potential for indirect humor.

Well, Mike's no bloated corpse of Shelley Winters, but at least it's better than previous efforts at Fark based television. Worth at least a second viewing.

I don't have a timer bar on the video, but it felt about 2 minutes too long.

Script needs a severe trim: the whole friggin square root thing? Boring. The chick? Ok to look at, and I liked what I thought was a subtle dig at her being a slut ("she's the smartest person in the world"). But without lines or some meaningful interaction with the host, she's just a prop.

The script beat the same obvious joke (married people don't have sex) out three different ways: Mike being married, the single girl who is smart, and one of the comments. Cut the fat out of the script. Hit big with one joke and move on:

Hi, I'm Mike and this is what's up this week on Fark.
There's a story that sex makes you smarter.
I wouldn't know much about that. Or anything. I'm married.
Here's what farkers had to say about it:

I despise videos which are basically "I saw this on the internet". They rarely give any added value over just providing a link and are usually diluted by the presenters padding it out with their "personalities". Maybe they are good if you are too drunk to click links and read.

Maybe such things would be more interesting if they collected a whole bunch of related links and synthesized them into coherent whole, as long as the presenter/content ratio was kept low.

2014-01-16 02:45:36 PM
It was a bit spastic.  I haven't felt that quick-cut-sick since watching Moulin Rouge.

If time is the issue, edit it down to the quality content.  It felt kind of like the guy that is giving his first school presentation, freaks out and does his 10 minute bit in one.  A little less auctioneer maybe.

It's probably because I sound like Eeyore on methadone but that pacing makes me a little nervous.

2014-01-16 02:50:05 PM
On a previous video discussion, I had recommended a crawl of some of the week's funniest headlines, although I concede that it would be distracting if you're trying to keep the format quick and crisp like this one.

Better than Fark TV. Several actual Laugh OL moments

When quoting top comments, it might help to actually show the username as he says it. Him having to say something like ""that's really his name" for the last one doesn't bode well for weirder handles, and the possibilty for confusion abounds with handles that are similar to each other. Ctrl-Alt-Del and CtrlAltDelete, for example

The only big negative for me was that there was just way too much shiat constantly zooming into and out of the frame. if you absolutely must put that many different things into the mix, perhaps occasionaly use some other kind of less obtrusive cut?

The writing was OK, the delivery was pretty damned good, and the girl was cute.

2014-01-16 02:53:25 PM
It felt rushed, and yet at the same time sparse.  Not enough content for the time spent, but the delivery felt like they were trying to pack in material that never materialized.

Too upbeat.  Fark is the snarky bitter corner of the Internet.  We hate everything but Jennifer Lawrence, caturday, and beer.  This felt very "pop culture news", and it should probably be darker and meaner.  Think more like Louis C.K., less Ryan Seacrest.

I started out in this vein when I saw the presenter guy, and I was all like "if you want the face of Fark, you should probably have gotten a neckbearded dude with some suspenders and gravy stains", but then I realized that Drew is probably trying to get people to actually visit this den of misanthropes, bastards and reprobates.

bah.. I just watched it a second time and now I think the pacing is fine/quick enough and have reformed my opinion...

The issue may be that any show takes time to develop into a groove. The first Seinfeld episode, and the whole first season, was considered awkward, slow and not promising.. yet eventually became the number one show  (I know it's a different format, but point stands.)

It may be difficult to make this happen right away, no matter what you can bring to it now...

As an advertising guy, I liked it and think it has potential towards the youth market. You'll definitely get some advertising as a lot of the agencies who have digital departments thrive on this kind of stuff.. but you probably know that.

I was trying to think of what the guy in the video's delivery reminded me of and now I remember. It reminds me of the "I didn't know I was going to have to say something in front of everyone on camera" guy at weddings. You've probably seen it happen. Everyone's having a good time, they've all had a few drinks and a guy has a microphone thrust in his hand and is asked to say a few words while various people video record it. They try to think of what to say and they end up talking way too fast etc.

I know Drew wants my honest, objective opinion here so ....

Boy, that sucked.

I wanted to like it ... because I do love my Fark.com and all things related. But that was just not good. Way too scripted, and dude was stiff as a board while delivering bad cliches like "married people don't ever have sex" ... 3 times. I was married, I get it.

The square root thing? WTF(ark) is that about. Reading a 25 digit number off a cue card does not work as comedy. Get rid of the dude and replace him with the random girl that showed up for no apparent reason. Topless.

I'd love to comment on the video, but I can't seem to get it to play. I'm using Firefox with NoScript, and I clicked to let everything on that page through (4 times, due to page reloads) and when I check it there's nothing being blocked, but when I click play I get the stupid ad pop-up on the player screen, but that's it. The black on the screen was very black, though, so that's at least one good thing about the video.

I like Meow's commitment to that character. I have always tried to read all her comments to see if she would break character and finally admit whose Alt she is. A couple of years ago, there was a thread where she posted in the wrong voice. I probably could have figured it out at that point, but the thread was confusing as it was and I just let it slide.

I would like to be in on the joke, but if I had to find it out by deduction and research, I don't think I could keep from outing her. I don't want to ruin the fun, so I don't try to figure it out any more. On the other hand, if she told me herself, I could totally keep the secret.

Its a commercial for Fark.com

It might work as a weekly roundup of the "good" stuff that hits the main page, but then it would be a vapid rehash.  Now, if you did an in-depth review and investigation of the events that need more than a smarmy comment or funny photoshop associated with them, then you might have something worth watching.  Otherwise.... it's Tosh.0

2014-01-16 09:07:52 PM
I guess the question is...what is the GOAL of doing this?  To simply promote FARK (NTTAWTT)?  To actually create a viable TV(-esque) series?  Just for shiats and giggles?  Lost a bet?

If you know the goal, you can tailor your approach.  I have to agree with several people on here--it seems mostly promotional (again, NTTAWTT).  But if you're trying to make a standalone source of entertainment...well... I donno.  I'm not a producer.  I understand goals, but not entertainment.  Except when I take my pants off.  Then I can REALLY get the laughs. :P

And, yeah, the host (or, at least, the 'white flashes') was really frenetic.  But, I thought the pacing was fine.  And, the host DID manage to maintain my attention.  It's really no different than what you'd see on E! or MTV.

...

I think I may have just insulted the creators of WTFark. O.o

Well...

I wasn't crazy about the video effects when the camera went from Phirm's closeup to a wider shot and vice-versa. But I think I could get used to it. I think there were a bit too many camera jumps as well.

Other than that, it was okay. I'd probably watch more of them.

The chromakey needs work; too much green spill. The jump cut position moves are annoying. But overall, I am like Tom Hanks playtesting the robot/building toys in "Big":  "I don't get it".

I mean, I don't get the point of a video presenter reading to us one of the articles we've already read.  Who is the audience for that? I can read TFA and the best comments for 2 or 3 topics in the time I'd use watching... whatever that was.  This isn't adding value to my FARK experience.

I guess you tried this a little with the abortive "FARK TV" before, but IMO, if you want a branded, in-house media component to FARK, it should be outsourced to the FARK community like "Funny or Die". It's the only model I can think of that can keep pace with the demand for new material. I think you just need to filter and curate submissions better, with higher standards.

I'm sorry if it's not what you'd like to hear. But it just doesn't look like something I want or need.

2014-01-17 01:47:27 AM
In the begining when he says "welcome to what the FARK! blah blah..." I think he needs to say it more nonchalantly.

2014-01-17 11:39:28 AM

Thorak: It felt rushed, and yet at the same time sparse.

Yup!  Seconded... the writing and presentation made the guy look like a Mormon Church commercial.. "See? we are hip and also 'rad'... notice our girl, we have one! "

2014-01-17 03:24:53 PM
Here's a thing: even when you make it impossible for me to turn down the volume on the commercial, I can still mute it on my computer. I just have to go the extra step of clicking the little thingy on the corner of the screen. This frustrates me, and makes me hate the featured product.

2014-01-17 05:46:14 PM
him blinking all over the place is quite annoying.   reminds me of those "world's stupidest X" shows.  missing interviews with 5th string washed up actors.

2014-01-17 06:10:50 PM
The problem here, for me, is I come to fark because of my displeasure with traditional media outlets, so making a -not news- show that falls into the same traps traditional -news- shows do only differs in the fact that you're honest about it.

What I mean is this: the CNNs and MSNBCs of the world beat the shiat out the news stories and this video does the same thing, even if it's funny and honest about what it's trying to do.

So that's my question: who is this show for?  People who read the comments already, anyways?

I think there's a good idea here, using humor to draw people into the debate, though, but that show would not be for the people who already visit this site.

2014-01-17 07:39:05 PM
Lasted ten seconds.  Didn't care for topic or delivery.
