Speeds maybe? The seeds are all in Colorado

Depends on what you're trying to grow.  Now, I've seen certain types of weeds grow on the interstate... right up between the lanes in some places.  But I doubt anyone has ever intentionally tried to grow crops on the freeway

75? try 80-85 in the fast lane. What they need to do is keep the assholes doing under 70 to the right side and enforce it. I was driving down I-4 to tampa yesterday and bottle neck traffic because these assholes keep doing 65/70 in the left lane. They can do 70 in the middle and 65 in the right, this keeps the traffic flowing, but there's always some jackass doing 70 in the left causing bottle neck traffic and all it takes is one accident to shut down a road for an hour.

/frankly even if they raised it to 80people will still be doing 70 in the left lane, damn tourist/soccer moms/assholes

Chickenshiat drivers crowd the left lane because they're chickenshiat drivers. Every other lane requires you to be aware of all surroundings (front, back, left, and right), while the left lane allows people to only focus on 3 sides (front, back, and right). They like that lane because it's one less thing they have to worry about.

I-75 should be fun, especially at the Georgia line.  Now the far left lane will be plaid.

Although my own driving experiences in Florida are limited to South Florida (mostly Miami-Ft. Lauderdale and nearby areas), in my experience it isn't true that 75 is what "most people drive anyway."  In my experience, a substantial percentage of drivers in that area fall into one of two categories: (1) geriatrics driving 50 mph in the left lane with their blinker on for 10 miles, and (2) wannabe gang-bangers passing you on the right shoulder at 100 mph in their blinged-out Escalade (a huge 4WD truckcar on 24" dubs of course being a very sensible vehicle for South Florida's harsh, frozen winter hellscape of climate).

I would nominate the Miami area as the place with the worst drivers in the U.S.

It's not just FL. It's true most places.

DC Beltway I-495 posted speed limit 55MPH

Official average speeds in non-peak hours frequently >65
http://www.chart.state.md.us/travinfo/speeddata.asp

It's not unusual to be puttering along at 75 and have a blur zip past you at real speed.

2014-01-16 01:38:45 PM
its florida.  half the cars are going 85, the other half are going 40 with the blinker on.

people speed in florida?  i only drove there once but there were more people militantly driving under the speed limit in the left lane than speeding

People move out of your way when you bump them at 75. You don't need to do a pit maneuver, just bump them enough to make them realize you don't care about killing them for not yielding to faster traffic.

If you think I'm crazy, you're better off not using i-80

2014-01-16 01:52:51 PM
Some states used to have minimum speeds posted on their freeways. Of course, the number I remember is 40 m.p.h., so that's not too helpful. But if they pushed it up to 55 minimum and actively ticketed senile idiots doing under that limit, it might get them to speed up. Or they might give up driving on freeways altogether, which would increase safety even more.

In the past few months I remember coming across a geriatric who was doing ~45mph in the centre lane.  That'll wake you up when you're cruising along at ~75mph.

How about a new reality TV show based on the results of lowering the speed limit by 5 MPH and installing automated speed cameras every so often? I'm sure it'd be a hit...

I average driving 75 mph. Anything above that are above my driving skills and most cars I drive anyways have poor handling above 80.

GA now has a super-speeder law that kicks in for anyone traveling faster than 80 mph. If you get stopped going 80 or over, you get a fine. But some weeks later you will get a bill from the DPS for an additional $250. However, I routinely go 75 mph on the freeways and people blow past me all the time. So it obviously isn't stringently enforced.

The GSP is not the problem. They give most motorists warnings. It is the county mounties you have to be careful of.

2014-01-16 02:01:41 PM
Most people do 75? Maybe in the middle or right lane. I keep up with traffic at 80-90 in the left lane on my bike. You still get the old fogeys and Haitians going 50 in the lane of their choice, though.

Which four?

At least that's a different approach to Chris Christie's strategy of reducing the speeds in several lanes to zero!

I can't see this working out too well. Florida drivers are absolutely dreadful in every imaginable way. The elder drivers are slow and unaware. The younger drivers are all putting on makeup, eating burgers or texting. They get directly on your ass and go all ragey if you don't move out of there way. Entirely too much stress on Florida highways and this might not be a very good idea.

Not to mention the endless ripping up and 'repairing' of major arteries.

*shudder*

Hey, don't be so harsh.  It takes a lot of driving discipline to keep your blinker on for exactly 10 miles.

Ever notice that the right lane is almost always empty, if not sparse?
I was on I4 this morning at 4:50 and saw a guy get on and moved straight into the middle lane.  There was absolutely no one ahead.

I stay in the right lane, and I drive fast.  If anyone is upset that I'm passing on the right, I will gladly point out that if they were in the right lane, I would have been forced to pass on the left.  But, seeing as how they were in the wrong lane, passing on the right was their decision, not mine.

Try focusing further up the road instead of ten feet in front of your hood and shiat doesn't sneak up on you like that.

I drive at the speed limit, and sometimes I drive in the left lane. Depends on conditions, and what I need to do.

You're welcome to state your opinion about that policy, but you should understand that if your opinion doesn't come with either new laws that adjust the speed limit in the left-hand lane, or an offer to indemnify me against tickets for speeding or insurance hikes, that your opinion is neither new to me nor relevant.

2014-01-16 02:38:45 PM
That's great but first get rid of the whole changeable speed limit signs in downtown. The freeways/toll roads leading to downtown drop to 55 and now one goes it but then in downtown they have digital speed limit signs that drop to 50, 45, 40 etc depending on how much traffic there is. I have never seen anyone go as slow as those signs say. Even folks who always stick to the speed limit. If there's enough traffic you can't go anywhere it slows to a crawl but if there's room to go faster than 40 people are doing it whether the sign says to or not.

Another side note... They just dropped a few stretches of the I-4 from 65 to 60 and 60 to 55 in January of 2010 or 2011 leaving everyone going "where the hell did that come from?"  I hope this doesn't just undo that and goes a bit further.

I disagree.  People crowd the left lane because of two reasons:  1. It's the ""fast lane", and 2. People feel that thy can use the left lane to their own whimsy and not have to yield to faster traffic, which is absolutely incorrect.  Not only that, but many people in #2 think that they own that lane, and no one is in any need to get to their destination any more quickly than they are.  Plus, I doubt many people really pay attention to their rear view mirrors as much as they should, but there are a lot of people who don't yield when they should (and some will, actually SLOW shoulda their than move over because of their self-serving attitudes.

The goal is to prevent the ripple effects of hard braking which causes tons of traffic jams but of course people are dumbasses.

Gee, thanks for the tip.

I did see them early but I couldn't tell what it was-- again, it was night, freeway in rural South Dakota, enough oncoming traffic that I had my low beams on.  I caught a glimpse of the reflection of my lights on their back end, just a flicker of movement-- thought, what was that, did a deer just run across the road?  No, there it is again.  A few seconds later I realized exactly what it was, but I was pretty close by then.

As a person who works in Tampa and uses I-75 on occasion, people who complain about people going 75 in the left lane can eat an entire bag of phallic symbols. I am not going to open myself up to a speeding ticket just so you yahoos can get to your destination two seconds faster. How about just driving the speed limit or 5 miles an hour above it.

Absolutey horrendous. And everyone wonders why the 275 is always congested. It's because of people changing lanes every .2 miles because that lane is moving 2 MPH faster.
