Harbinger of the Doomed Rat: ..... It was even Muslims who discovered that the Earth was round (500 years before Galileo.)

The roundness of the Earth was well established even in the West by the time of Galileo, who was born in 1564.  You probably mean heliocentrism, which, while sporadicly discussed (and usually dismissed) by Muslim scholars, was not widely accepted before the West.

FlashHarry: this was very good to see. and yes, it is a "stupid-person thing." however... racist bullshiat like this is 10 times more likely to be spouted by a republican than a democrat. in other words: "the republican party: not racist, but number-one with racists."

The funny thing is many Arabic people I knew growing up were Iraqi Christians who had fled because of Saddam (usually families with, from what I gathered, a bit of money) or after (since the semi functioning state actually afforded them some protection in terms of worship and that's gone now).  That plus a good number of recent immigrants being small business owners (or managing the family business for 2nd and 3rd gen) = should have been a reliable Republican voting block, if cards were played right.

I'd say he shot himself in the foot, but Michigan is gerrymandered to f--k and back.  So he stubbed his toe at best.

Europeans (among others) knew the earth was a sphere for centuries before Muhammed was even born, much less Galileo.

My point is that that Galileo had nothing do with any scientific debate about the roundness of the earth - after all, the Earth had been circumnavigated by Europeans 50 years before he was born. The "controversial" scientific issue that he was caught up in was about whether or not the Earth was at the center of the Solar System. People seem get the two issues confused and often bring up Galileo in the wrong context.

If it wasn't for Muslims there would be no Fark.

Plus don't forget all that they preserved of Greek mathematics and what they did contribute themselves- pretty necessary for the code for any iteration of Fark over the years.

I love it when a Republican pwns himself by demonstrating a pretty embarassing ignorance of basic farking world history.

muslims (and blacks and latinos) tend to be quite conservative, at least culturally speaking. so you'd think that they'd be natural republicans. in fact, if it weren't for 50 solid years of virulent GOP racism, they might be republican constituencies today. so i'd say that the whole party has shot itself in its collective foot.

RexTalionis: The vast majority of the works of classical writers from ancient Rome and Greece survive to us through Muslim scholars. While in the west, the much of the learnings of the ancient philosophers and mathematicians were lost in the Dark Ages, the Muslim scholars translated and preserved much of their writings. Many of the modern English translations you can read today are translated from Arabic at one point.

Meanwhile, at around the same time in the West, a monk destroyed a parchment written on by Archimedes laying out the foundations for Calculus thousands of years before Newton and Liebnitz so he can reuse the parchment to write a prayer book.

https://www.sciencenews.org/article/prayer-archimedes

Huh, I always suspected the greeks would have toyed with calculus. I'm sure the idea occurred to many of their mathematicians and philosophers. A big problem for them of course was infinity which they ran up against all the time, 'specially when messing about with fractal ideas. They hated indefinite ideas in math, it was actually considered outside of math. So it was the philosophical guys such as with Zeno and his paradoxes where distances and times are being cut in half forever. I remember thinking when I learned of him that these guys must have had calculus.
Archimedes' work having been entitled "The Method" is interesting. I suppose he called it that because he was aware of the pragmatic usefulness of the idea but felt it was not worthy of fitting in his understanding of mathematics.

Didn't the ancients also generally take the view (opposite modern science) that complexity was common in nature and that simplicity was for idiots? (Or am I thinking about post-Galilean scienticians?)

Hence things like epicycles (developed in the 18th century), where today we'd look at that and say "Too complex; simplify", then they saw that as "proof" of the Creator's Hand.

// or, in the case of the Greeks, the Creators' Hands

Even if you actually believe that bethrothal marriage in the ancient world was somehow "rape," you'd have to accept that the Hebrew patriarchs were no different. Lifespans were short in near east tribal societies, and people married young.

No, I think it was the Mayans that gave us zero.  Muslims did give us architecture, astronomy, and algebra though.  Plus, while Europe was going through that whole dark ages period it was the Islamic world that preserved the knowledge and teachings of the classical Greek and Roman periods.

1. Zero as a placeholder-digit and decimal-style systems originate in the various little kingdoms and civilizations that used to be around in what is now western India.  Not sure where you're getting "Mayans".  The decimal system did come to feudal Europe through the Islamic empires, though.

2. As someone noted above, the bit about the Arab world preserving Greek and roman teachings is a bit of an oversimplification.  Europe preserved a lot more of Roman  culture, while the Arabic states preserved more of Rome's (and Greece's) practical arts.  Since in the modern era we've sort of realized that being able to build roads and grow food is a bit more important than remembering old legends about made-up shiat, we currently value what the Arab states preserved a lot more.  But both sides actually did their share of book-burning, one of the burnings of the library at Alexandria was Muslim fundies.  The Muslim states were only 'preserving' knowledge by constrast, in real terms both civilizations were shiat-poor at taking advantage of the scattered scientists and engineers they produced.  I mean, seriously, neither side remembered how to mix  concrete, western civilization didn't catch back up to ancient Rome on that one until the 1950s.

3. There was a European school of architecture, too.  Not quite as practical as the empire's version, sure, but it resulted in plenty of equally ridiculous palaces and cathedrals and the Europeans were actually somewhat better with fortifications.

People forget that the East Roman Empire was there too and kept and expanded much of Classical knowledge also.  The Catholic schism means that Western History tends to discount them, but they were the light in the world during the period you describe.
