None of them were.

Malcolm X: born Malcolm Little, converted in prison.

I should add, that's just FYI, and has no bearing on either their being Muslim, or their contributions to society.

That's a particularly dumb thing for a politician in Michigan to say. Our state has a large Muslim population, especially Dearborn, which has the largest mosque in North America. It's just plain stupid to act like these folks aren't taxpaying American citizens who contribute to Michigan's economy and do their share.

This is possibly the worst state to say in which something like that.

Lemme guess. The Republican is from Grand Rapids.

Ahhh, Grandville. Grand Rapids is too "urban" for him.

2014-01-16 01:27:08 PM
Oh, I see... It's Agema. He's an asshole from Grandville, which is the Grand Rapids area (known for being the conservative armpit of Michigan; If you aren't Dutch, Catholic/Christian, and Republican out there, you might as well not exist). He's also known for saying pretty awful things about homosexuals and liberals. In brief, he's a typical hate-filled Grand Rapids conservative xenophobe.

There's a reason I moved away from that place. Guys like Agema being the norm is it.

HMS_Blinkin: I'm torn.  As a Michigander, Dave Agema's attention-whoring and general terrible-ness is embarrassing.  But as a compassionate human being, I'm pleased that he's drawing attention to how horrible Republicans are.

One need only spend a year in Grand Rapids to see how horrible some conservatives can be.

vpb: They invented distillation.  The word alcohol comes from Arabic.

If it wasn't for Muslims there would be no Fark.

Distillation dates to the first century CE, in Alexandria.  So similar historical region, but Islam didn't exist until the 600s so you're off by a few centuries.  And Alcohol has been a part of out diet since before we even branched into our current species.

That said, the question was "what have muslims done for  us", meaning the US.

So, a few random examples of famous Americans that actually did something useful to become famous (e.g. no sport players that converted to dodge the draft):

Fazlur Khan - Architect that designed the Sears Tower among other things
Ahmed Zewali - Nobel Prize, Chemistry, 1999
Zalmay Khalilzad - Former Ambassador to the UN
Mohamed A. El-Erian - CEO of PIMCO, one of the largest financial entities in the world

Plus, y'know, a farkton of US soldiers are muslim if supporting the troops is your thing.

Those look more like ashtrays, like you'd use for cigars. I mean, who uses a spittoon anymore (besides cartoon animators)?

Still gold, each one probably cost more than a high-end car (and worth less than the gas to fill it). Because "rich" always means "makes financially sound decisions".

2014-01-16 01:32:20 PM
Muslims did not come up with distillation, algebra, zero, "Arabic" numerals, etc. What they did was nick all kinds of useful stuff from everywhere and anywhere they could, then pass it around and on. Considering the range of Muslim expansion, this was a farkton of information from all over Eufrasia.

None of which has anything to do with American Muslim contributions to the United States, which is a weird line of thought to begin with. Americans are individuals of various origins, not competing ethnic blocks of invention or innovation. We all share our good stuff with each other. That's the point of the country, IMO.

He got me wondering, what has Dave Agema ever done for us

Well in another brilliant Facebook post he called Russia's anti-gay propaganda law is "common sense"
http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2014/01/dave_agema_ ru ssian_anti-gay_pr.html

His anti-gay marriage remarks, including that gay people "want free medical because they're dying" young due to AIDS,
http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2013/12/dave_agemas _f ull_statements_pu.html

He was apparently at the Battle of dumbass Duck Show:
"Good for them," Agema wrote. "The LGBT Gestapo speech police will not succeed when families like them are Biblically solid. You are in our prayers. May A&E fall into the pit they dug for you. STAND!"
http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2013/12/dave_agema_ fi nds_kinship_with.html

In 2013, he faced calls to resign from the Republican National Committee after he posted extracts from an article entitled "Everyone Should Know These Statistics On Homosexuals" which claimed homosexuals lived a "filthy lifestyle", were responsible for 50 percent of U.S. murders and that many are pedophiles
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Agema

/just the sort of fellow you'd expect to be leading the Michigan GOP

2014-01-16 01:37:20 PM
It should be noted that David Agema, who believes that Muslims contribute nothing and that homosexuals are responsible for half of all US murders, is a member of the Republican National Committee. That's right. This dude is GOP leadership. I believe there's a saying about inmates and asylums that applies very well here.

yes, i realize that a blanket statement such as that is a bit facile. and obviously there were scholarly people out there like Bede, et al. but it is true that a great deal of classical learning that would have otherwise been lost (over time, not "suddenly") was preserved by muslim scholars. and i'm referring to the first few centuries after the fall of rome, basically up until charlemagne and alfred the great.

More bullshiat from Dave Agema.

He comes from my region, and has raised quite a stir here in recent months with his antigay comments. Among other things, he's said that gays want domestic partner health benefits because they all die from AIDS at a young age, and that Vladamir Putin's antigay laws are "common sense."

The funny thing is that Agem'a an obvious closet case. One of these days, he's going to be busted in an airport bathroom wearing a rubber boy scout uniform and holding two guys' junk.

I mean, come on. Just look at him.

But, our numbers as we write them, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 are called Arabic numerals and greatly help us do math, as opposed to MM + MCCMVXI = ??

FlashHarry: more outreach from the big-tent GOP!

What? There must be blacks and Hispanics who are scared of the Muslims!

2014-01-16 01:57:57 PM

FlashHarry: they - along with some irish monks - pretty much preserved classical learning for us while we were busy painting our faces blue and slaughtering each other during the dark ages.

The "Dark Ages" is a mysnomer no longer used by historians because it has a singlular Western Bias. The east was never "dark" and the Eastern Roman Empire continued to flourish during that time period. It's also believed there was still trade and trappings of civilization throughout that time period so it wasn't as "dark" as all that.

As for people ripping the GOP and Republicans in general for this ijits remarks, you do realize the harshest critics highlighted in the article are Republicans as well. He managed to insult his own party as well. So this is less a GOP thing than a stupid person thing.

What have Muslims ever done for us?

Is that a rhetorical question, or is he just being inquisitive?

2014-01-16 02:00:28 PM
I'd say Algebra, but I am not going to expect a Republican to ever understand basic math...

2014-01-16 02:03:37 PM
What have the Muslims ever done for us aside from coffee, cameras, experimental physics, chess, soap, shampoo, perfume/spirits, irrigation, crank-shaft internal combustion engine, valves, pistons, combination locks, architectural innovation (pointed arch -european gothic cathedrals adopted this technique as it made the building much stronger, rose windows, dome buildings, round towers, etc.), surgical instruments, anesthesia, windmills, treatment for cowpox, fountain pens, our numbering system, algebra/trigonometry, modern cryptology, the 3 course meal (soup, meat/fish, fruit/nuts), crystal glasses, carpets, checks, gardens used for beauty and meditation instead of for herbs and kitchen, universities, optics, music, toothbrushes, hospitals, bathing, quilting, mariner's compass, soft drinks, pendulums, braille, cosmetics, plastic surgery, calligraphy, manufacturing of paper and cloth?

Let's not forget that it was a Muslim who realized that light ENTERS our eyes, unlike the Greeks who thought we EMITTED rays (which lead to the invention of the camera), or a Muslim who first flew in 852, even though it is the Wright Brothers who have taken the credit.  Or a Muslim by the name of Jabir ibn Hayyan who was known as the founder of modern Chemistry, having invented distillation, purification, oxidation, evaporation, and filtration (he also discovered sulfuric and nitric acid.)   It is a Muslim, by the name of Al-Jazari, who is known as the father of robotics. It was a Muslim who was the architect for Henry V's castle. It was a Muslim who invented hollow needles to suck cataracts from eyes (a technique still used today.) It was a Muslim who actually developed inoculation (not Jenner and Pasteur) to treat cowpox. It was even Muslims who discovered that the Earth was round (500 years before Galileo.)

But, you know, they've really never did much of anything for us.

In the US, yeah.

Overseas, though, Muslim clerics are just perfectly fine with marrying off 10-year old girls and so forth.

So pretty much I say wipe out all religion, 'cause they're all bad for children.
