more outreach from the big-tent GOP!

2014-01-16 10:56:36 AM
"Have you ever seen a Muslim do anything that contributes positively to the American way of life?" it asked.

Would it matter? Really? Who cares? F*cking dumbass. We've lots of <insert whatever you want here> people who sit on their asses, do sh*t all with their lives and never vote. Ever questioned them?

The vast majority of the works of classical writers from ancient Rome and Greece survive to us through Muslim scholars. While in the west, the much of the learnings of the ancient philosophers and mathematicians were lost in the Dark Ages, the Muslim scholars translated and preserved much of their writings. Many of the modern English translations you can read today are translated from Arabic at one point.

Meanwhile, at around the same time in the West, a monk destroyed a parchment written on by Archimedes laying out the foundations for Calculus thousands of years before Newton and Liebnitz so he can reuse the parchment to write a prayer book.

That's actually a bit of a lie. The west didn't just suddenly become ignorant during the dark ages. Knowledge gained in ancient times still was retained in major cities. That's just the Protestant Enlightenment propaganda trying to make their time look better.

The dark ages was just the time period where the lines of communications and social infrastructures that were developed under Roman Empire dissolved. As a result, there were plenty of wars to fill power vacuum left behind. Also the plague wiped out a huge chunk of the workforce.

But there were several universities founded in Europe during that time period, they knew the earth was round and many of the things the ancient Greeks knew. What they didn't know was perhaps the original documents.

Which is why historians call that time period, the Middle Ages now and not the dark ages.

For muslim clerics not raping.  Just because it's not reported doesn't mean it's not happening.  The Catholic Church is just major because of the hypocrisy, the cover-up and the deep pockets.  Other Christian denominations are recently under fire for similar abuse but because of the lack of a strong central leadership it's not major news.

To be fair, MULTIPLE civilizations across the world had base 10 systems (10 fingers). Some had base 5 and others base 20.

But, our numbers as we write them, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 are called Arabic numerals and greatly help us do math, as opposed to MM + MCCMVXI = ??

I'm sure there are just as many, if not more, Muslim clerics who molest little boys than there are Catholic priests who do it.  The media only reports on the Catholic priests doing it because they're solidly anti-Christian, as we all know.  I mean, you wouldn't expect the Muslim-lovers on Fox News--who always softpedal  anything that might paint Muslims in a bad light--to report on all of these Muslim cleric pedophilia scandals, would you?  Study it out.

Okay, there's no way you really misspelled all three of those names, so what joke am I missing?

None of the men listed was/is/is melanin-disadvantaged. (And I think they were converts to Islam, but I'm not certain.)

I don't know for sure either. I didn't think of it hard enough before (as apparent from my inability to spell the name correctly). It was the first 3 names came to mind.

However, since he was complaining about Muslims and not Arabs (I doubt he knows the difference), melanin should have nothing to do with it, or the fact that they were not born Muslim (I don't know if they were, or not).

That's a particularly dumb thing for a politician in Michigan to say. Our state has a large Muslim population, especially Dearborn, which has the largest mosque in North America. It's just plain stupid to act like these folks aren't taxpaying American citizens who contribute to Michigan's economy and do their share.

This is possibly the worst state to say in which something like that.

Oh, I see... It's Agema. He's an asshole from Grandville, which is the Grand Rapids area (known for being the conservative armpit of Michigan; If you aren't Dutch, Catholic/Christian, and Republican out there, you might as well not exist). He's also known for saying pretty awful things about homosexuals and liberals. In brief, he's a typical hate-filled Grand Rapids conservative xenophobe.

There's a reason I moved away from that place. Guys like Agema being the norm is it.

vpb: They invented distillation.  The word alcohol comes from Arabic.

Distillation dates to the first century CE, in Alexandria.  So similar historical region, but Islam didn't exist until the 600s so you're off by a few centuries.  And Alcohol has been a part of out diet since before we even branched into our current species.

That said, the question was "what have muslims done for  us", meaning the US.

So, a few random examples of famous Americans that actually did something useful to become famous (e.g. no sport players that converted to dodge the draft):

Fazlur Khan - Architect that designed the Sears Tower among other things
Ahmed Zewali - Nobel Prize, Chemistry, 1999
Zalmay Khalilzad - Former Ambassador to the UN
Mohamed A. El-Erian - CEO of PIMCO, one of the largest financial entities in the world

Plus, y'know, a farkton of US soldiers are muslim if supporting the troops is your thing.

Those look more like ashtrays, like you'd use for cigars. I mean, who uses a spittoon anymore (besides cartoon animators)?

Still gold, each one probably cost more than a high-end car (and worth less than the gas to fill it). Because "rich" always means "makes financially sound decisions".

2014-01-16 01:32:20 PM
Muslims did not come up with distillation, algebra, zero, "Arabic" numerals, etc. What they did was nick all kinds of useful stuff from everywhere and anywhere they could, then pass it around and on. Considering the range of Muslim expansion, this was a farkton of information from all over Eufrasia.

None of which has anything to do with American Muslim contributions to the United States, which is a weird line of thought to begin with. Americans are individuals of various origins, not competing ethnic blocks of invention or innovation. We all share our good stuff with each other. That's the point of the country, IMO.

yes, i realize that a blanket statement such as that is a bit facile. and obviously there were scholarly people out there like Bede, et al. but it is true that a great deal of classical learning that would have otherwise been lost (over time, not "suddenly") was preserved by muslim scholars. and i'm referring to the first few centuries after the fall of rome, basically up until charlemagne and alfred the great.

The "Dark Ages" is a mysnomer no longer used by historians because it has a singlular Western Bias. The east was never "dark" and the Eastern Roman Empire continued to flourish during that time period. It's also believed there was still trade and trappings of civilization throughout that time period so it wasn't as "dark" as all that.

I'd say Algebra, but I am not going to expect a Republican to ever understand basic math...

2014-01-16 02:03:37 PM
What have the Muslims ever done for us aside from coffee, cameras, experimental physics, chess, soap, shampoo, perfume/spirits, irrigation, crank-shaft internal combustion engine, valves, pistons, combination locks, architectural innovation (pointed arch -european gothic cathedrals adopted this technique as it made the building much stronger, rose windows, dome buildings, round towers, etc.), surgical instruments, anesthesia, windmills, treatment for cowpox, fountain pens, our numbering system, algebra/trigonometry, modern cryptology, the 3 course meal (soup, meat/fish, fruit/nuts), crystal glasses, carpets, checks, gardens used for beauty and meditation instead of for herbs and kitchen, universities, optics, music, toothbrushes, hospitals, bathing, quilting, mariner's compass, soft drinks, pendulums, braille, cosmetics, plastic surgery, calligraphy, manufacturing of paper and cloth?

Let's not forget that it was a Muslim who realized that light ENTERS our eyes, unlike the Greeks who thought we EMITTED rays (which lead to the invention of the camera), or a Muslim who first flew in 852, even though it is the Wright Brothers who have taken the credit.  Or a Muslim by the name of Jabir ibn Hayyan who was known as the founder of modern Chemistry, having invented distillation, purification, oxidation, evaporation, and filtration (he also discovered sulfuric and nitric acid.)   It is a Muslim, by the name of Al-Jazari, who is known as the father of robotics. It was a Muslim who was the architect for Henry V's castle. It was a Muslim who invented hollow needles to suck cataracts from eyes (a technique still used today.) It was a Muslim who actually developed inoculation (not Jenner and Pasteur) to treat cowpox. It was even Muslims who discovered that the Earth was round (500 years before Galileo.)

But, you know, they've really never did much of anything for us.

The funny thing is many Arabic people I knew growing up were Iraqi Christians who had fled because of Saddam (usually families with, from what I gathered, a bit of money) or after (since the semi functioning state actually afforded them some protection in terms of worship and that's gone now).  That plus a good number of recent immigrants being small business owners (or managing the family business for 2nd and 3rd gen) = should have been a reliable Republican voting block, if cards were played right.

My point is that that Galileo had nothing do with any scientific debate about the roundness of the earth - after all, the Earth had been circumnavigated by Europeans 50 years before he was born. The "controversial" scientific issue that he was caught up in was about whether or not the Earth was at the center of the Solar System. People seem get the two issues confused and often bring up Galileo in the wrong context.

muslims (and blacks and latinos) tend to be quite conservative, at least culturally speaking. so you'd think that they'd be natural republicans. in fact, if it weren't for 50 solid years of virulent GOP racism, they might be republican constituencies today. so i'd say that the whole party has shot itself in its collective foot.

RexTalionis: The vast majority of the works of classical writers from ancient Rome and Greece survive to us through Muslim scholars. While in the west, the much of the learnings of the ancient philosophers and mathematicians were lost in the Dark Ages, the Muslim scholars translated and preserved much of their writings. Many of the modern English translations you can read today are translated from Arabic at one point.

Meanwhile, at around the same time in the West, a monk destroyed a parchment written on by Archimedes laying out the foundations for Calculus thousands of years before Newton and Liebnitz so he can reuse the parchment to write a prayer book.

https://www.sciencenews.org/article/prayer-archimedes

Huh, I always suspected the greeks would have toyed with calculus. I'm sure the idea occurred to many of their mathematicians and philosophers. A big problem for them of course was infinity which they ran up against all the time, 'specially when messing about with fractal ideas. They hated indefinite ideas in math, it was actually considered outside of math. So it was the philosophical guys such as with Zeno and his paradoxes where distances and times are being cut in half forever. I remember thinking when I learned of him that these guys must have had calculus.
Archimedes' work having been entitled "The Method" is interesting. I suppose he called it that because he was aware of the pragmatic usefulness of the idea but felt it was not worthy of fitting in his understanding of mathematics.

Didn't the ancients also generally take the view (opposite modern science) that complexity was common in nature and that simplicity was for idiots? (Or am I thinking about post-Galilean scienticians?)

Hence things like epicycles (developed in the 18th century), where today we'd look at that and say "Too complex; simplify", then they saw that as "proof" of the Creator's Hand.

// or, in the case of the Greeks, the Creators' Hands

1. Zero as a placeholder-digit and decimal-style systems originate in the various little kingdoms and civilizations that used to be around in what is now western India.  Not sure where you're getting "Mayans".  The decimal system did come to feudal Europe through the Islamic empires, though.

2. As someone noted above, the bit about the Arab world preserving Greek and roman teachings is a bit of an oversimplification.  Europe preserved a lot more of Roman  culture, while the Arabic states preserved more of Rome's (and Greece's) practical arts.  Since in the modern era we've sort of realized that being able to build roads and grow food is a bit more important than remembering old legends about made-up shiat, we currently value what the Arab states preserved a lot more.  But both sides actually did their share of book-burning, one of the burnings of the library at Alexandria was Muslim fundies.  The Muslim states were only 'preserving' knowledge by constrast, in real terms both civilizations were shiat-poor at taking advantage of the scattered scientists and engineers they produced.  I mean, seriously, neither side remembered how to mix  concrete, western civilization didn't catch back up to ancient Rome on that one until the 1950s.

3. There was a European school of architecture, too.  Not quite as practical as the empire's version, sure, but it resulted in plenty of equally ridiculous palaces and cathedrals and the Europeans were actually somewhat better with fortifications.

Which, to be fair, is a story that repeats itself throughout history.  The Persian empire was a dominant cultural force until they became complacent and were pushed aside by the upstart Greeks, who then become complacent and were pushed aside by the upstart Romans, who then became complacent and were pushed aside by the upstart Islamic empires, who then became complacent and were pushed aside by the upstart European empires.
