No real big surprises or dark horses here, but a really really solid year for movies nonetheless.

It's going to clean up at the Razzies

/more entertaining than the real awards anyway

Okay I didn't see Lone Ranger, but it's up for Special Effects and Pacific Rim isn't?

Jonah Hill got nominated AGAIN?  Who does he have dirt on?

/I like that they nominated Barkhad Abdi, the pirate from Captain Phillips, but Fassbender should run away with it

Even Red Letter Media thought it was awesome. (youtube, NSFW)

Weirdly enough, the dude has acting chops with the right director.

Seconded. I am shocked that Pacific Rim was not nominated for anything.

I guess.  Never saw Moneyball, still haven't seen Wolf.  I think 'All is Lost' definitely got snubbed though.  Great movie.  This year was kind of stacked.

Fassbender deliberately chose not to campaign for the Oscar, so that may hurt his chances.

Stephen Prouty got nominated for an Oscar for his work on a Jackass movie.

It's for makeup, but still.

And yet he still got nominated, and the work of everyone on that project elevates his chances of winning.

Oh, come on, that might be the least surprising nomination of the entire group. Overrated or not, there was never a chance that Gravity wasn't going to be nominated for best picture.

I'm going to be very disappointed if Leonardo doesn't finally get his long due award. Then again, knowing Hollywood, he probably won't.

/Not that the awards mean much anyhow, seeing the many questionable recipients of years past.

Did you see '12 Years a Slave'?

"The Butler" completely shut out?  I don't pretend to know the nuances of the Academy but that puzzles me.

I don't care how good a movie it is - August: Osage County is the stupidest goddamn title for a movie (and play) and I hope that it loses everything based solely on that.

2014-01-16 09:50:43 AM
It was a trite, utterly predictable story in which the hero is such a weak, simpering character that she needs a dead guy to save her. Best cinematography? Fine. Best wow holy crap lookit we got us some 3D technology? Fine, invent that and give it to it. But best picture? Bullshiat.

While it's a strong group this year, I would say the only person really standing in his way is Christian Bale in American Hustle. The Academy is kind of known for loving big character transformations, and not only did Bale turn in an awesome performance, he was nearly unrecognizable in the role.

2014-01-16 09:51:46 AM
I've seen a grand total of one movie on that entire page. Not saying that to prove anything, I'm just shocked. I guess I don't watch the kind of movies that get nominated for Oscars anymore.

The only acceptable use for a colon in a movie title is to precede "Fievel Goes West" or "The Secret of the Ooze."

I agree. I loved it because it because I find  the vastness of Outer Space mind-bogglingly freaky, but as a movie there wasn't much too it.

I would have nominated Jermeny Renner over Bradley Cooper in American Hustle. Yes Cooper had the higher billing and bigger role, but Renner I feel did a much better job. Also I would have put Lake Bell up for her screenplay for "In A World..." Ever season needs a small well done film nominated and I think it was the one this year to get it. Plus it was so inside the industry I could see voters liking it.

/The Croods? Really???

I'm genuinely stunned Tom Hanks wasn't nominated. He should have won, he was amazing.

I'll agree that Hill did very good in that role but it wasn't nomination worthy. Just another actor benefiting from the "Scorsese Effect".

It was glaringly obvious in the movie, nothing should be ruined for you if you have at least a room temperature IQ.

And Robert Redford.  They really could have expanded the Best Actor category this year.

Obvious or not, it's still a dick move. It's not like it's all that hard to discuss movies without having to throw major plot points under the bus as some kind of validation for our opinions.

Animated Feature Film
The Croods
Despicable Me 2
Ernest & Clementine
Frozen
The Wind Rises

Best Animated Feature Film category started in 2001.  Is this the first time Pixar didn't get nominated?
