The take-away: If you kidnap someone and want to show proof by taking a photo of them holding a current newspaper, use a low-resolution camera.

In one passage in Moby Dick, doesn't Ishmael sort of see the world reflected in the pupil of Starbuck's or Ahab's eye?

First reaction as I read it: "yeah right sure, if you had crazy high resolution and lighting".

Second reaction, "hey wow this could mean something".

Third reaction, "oh so they had crazy high resolution and lighting and were aiming straight at the eyeball".

Fourth reaction, "okay so I just wasted time on this article".

In the end it falls squarely under the "No shat, Sharlock" school of futurism.  As camera resolutions increase, we can see more detail.

Freaking ground breaking, jeez.

At least I liked that CSI mashup, thanks.

...and then Wil Wheaton was IN HIS EYE!

This.  It's a non-story.

That's what I thought too.  Most interesting aspect of the article.

This was not done in one.

Unfortunate I cannot post the eBay-naked-fat-guy pic (on mobile)

Dammit fark, remember where you come from.

Also, one of the tales of the dark side like TV shows had an episode where a horror writer saw his murderer in reflections and the writer finally got whacked when he saw the reflection in his girlfriend's eye in the moments before sex.

Yeah I did laugh at the bit about it being useful in crimes.. I mean come the fark on. Number of criminals taking ultra-high-res pics of their victims? maybe zero? I think zero..

Given the eye has a wet surface the fact a reflection can clearly appear in it is just trivially obvious.

Or remove their eyes, or cover them ... covering works too.

Or learn how to resize (and save as jpg).

"In their study, the researchers used a high-resolution digital camera (Hasselblad H2D 39-megapixel camera) and illuminated the room with four carefully positioned Bowens DX1000 flash lamps. Then the photographer and four volunteer bystanders stood in a semi-circle around the subject to be photographed. "

Awesome, so if you are kidnapped by the Industrial Light and Magic Jihad, and they make their ransom demands from the studio, and email uncompressed .raw dumps from the camera along with the ransom video, and all cluster around your face while shooting said video...

"However, as camera technology is rapidly improving, it may not be long before mobile phones routinely carry cameras with more than 39 megapixels."

Which will not get you any more information in your image due to lens diffraction and the width of the wavelength of light.
