All new web addresses registered in the UK will be screened for terms that signal or encourage serious sexual offences.
Nominet, the organisation that oversees all the UK's web addresses, said all domain names will be checked within 48 hours of registration.
If an address is found to contain a prohibited term it will be suspended or de-registered.

So, you're saying that we need to start using website names as slang for serious sexual offenses? Like when those Stubenville guys totally binged that chick? Or the priests who yahoo choirboys in the reddit?

/fark?

So this is a PSA to all sexual abusers, basically: If you buy a domain: wait a week to put anything up on it.

Seriously, how is this going to work exactly? The criminals are going to do what they always do and figure out how to circumvent the flags, and all they're going to be left with is a bunch of false-positives that an underpaid government employee may or may not have the wherewithal to realize aren't criminal.

I give this two months of useful functioning at most and that's if they implement it properly to begin with, and since it's being implemented by people who either think it's genuinely a good idea or who don't give a shiat and just want to be able to say "Look at me, I'm thinking of the children!" I don't hold out much hope on that count.

Did childrensexchange.com ever register in the UK?

Why just sex-related crimes? Does the UK encourage non sex-related crimes?

2014-01-15 10:28:30 AM
I'm really struggling to see the point in this. Surely a rose by any other name would smell just as rapey.

And why would any site hosting illegal content choose to declare the illegality in their domain name?

caution: "Eleanor Bradley, chief operating officer at Nominet told the BBC that the registration service was not trying to censor the internet."

"We're not censoring but..." is the freedom of expression equivalent of "I'm not racist but...". It is invariably followed by something so contradictory that even saying it at all brands one as a complete turd weasel until proven otherwise.

This effort might have actually had some kind of effect in 1995, but how many people planning to register a crime-related domain name really care about the .uk TLD when there's dozens of micronation-hosted vanity TLDs available anyway (and probably for less money)?

Any address that is flagged as containing one of the prohibited words or phrases will then be checked by a human. This is to ensure that legitimate domain names are not suspended unnecessarily.

Suuuuuuuuure it will...
