So this means porn is free as in beer or free as in three giant dildos suddenly popping out of a midget's arse?

Rev. Skarekroe: lol people still pay for porn lololol amirite?

kind of the funny thing - I don't know and I'm not looking it up, but I'd be willing to bet more people watch more porn than at any point in history, yet the industry is dying.  Probably time to somehow change the business model to fit the current viewership methods, which would involve somehow making it available while not making people pay or provide personal information.  Good luck to them.

it isn't dying, per se.  there will always be people wiling to pay for their fetish.  it is just that for the mainstream man, there is zero reason to purchase\collect\store plastic containers full of porn any longer, no different than with music, movies, books, ect.

most guys that need to wank one out hit a 'tube site, and six minutes later move on.

it's the women, ya'll.  women still buy mainstream porn.  which means that mainstream porn sales are in the toilet.  the industry needs to figure out how to package and sell porn better to women, either by discreet mail or passion parties or some shiat.

Just put Deen on the package.

The porn industry also has to compete with the much lower-cost model of people just making porn and (accidentally or intentionally) putting it online for free.  In the age of hi-res cell phone cameras and selfies, there't really no reason to pay some hot 20-yo girl to get naked on camera---she'll do it herself and then the pics will get out online.  Same goes with couples who make their own videos of themselves.

I'm not saying that that is a mainstream (or even morally reasonable) source of porn, but the reality is that people are now empowered to make and distribute (again, whether they mean to or not) their own porn.  The idea of a studio and a script and actors just isn't as necessary to the process anymore.

A "free" service (kinda like Cracker) and a pay service (no commercials), that would be one option.   I think at this point in time even the big corporations would love to have a Cracker-styled pr0n site by the amount of people that would click and would give two farks to those individuals that put up a fuss about it.

Interstitial ads, say, inserted just as the woman is pulling off her bra? Or maybe a "watch this 60 second ad for an interruption-free viewing experience"? I could see some value there.

There's probably some people who'd pay for a porn streaming service if:

- It streamed in HD.
- It wasn't littered with ads for cam girls and penis enlargement.
- It didn't have malware.
- It's billing was paperless and went straight to the email address you gave it.
- It had child proofing controls.
- It was cost comparable to Netflix, Crackle, etc.

The end of net neutrality will probably obviate that joke. The next step will be to move all porn to an .xxx domain ("for the children!!!"), then the isp's can charge extra for access to those particular dns replies.

Of course there will be ways around it for the technically astute, but I still see it coming somehow. Free porn will go the way of Napster, somehow, someway.

Pretty much this

It's like journalism. It used to pay well because it had such huge barriers to entry - printing presses, distribution networks etc. The stuff of writing an opinion piece... anyone could do.

There's also piracy and that there are certain social downsides to paying for it - it's going to appear on your credit card bill that your wife will see. Plus people might think that they might get blackmailed.

The other thing to consider is the historical back catalogue. There is now over 30 years of colour/sound porn out there. You release a new film, it's competing with all that stuff. It's not like regular movies where the effects improve, or people find new ways of telling stories. It's basically the same as the stuff in the 90s, only with different haircuts and more tattoos and fake tits. Arguably, the production values are lower than back in the late 70s/early 80s.  The only new markets seem to be in indie porn - someone has a fetish and just makes it and sees what happens. e.g. The Art of the BJ

I came of age in the early 80's.  I've been to a porn theater...once. You don't want to go  to one. It  was the creepiest, nastiest place. Thank god for VHS.  It was a godsend. (and probably the best thing to ever happen to the Porn industry)

to each their own. my point is more that the cost has meant that people with a niche can produce for specialised markets, where stuff in the 80s/90s was pretty much vanilla. And that means that if you're producing for a market that wants to see Japanese women dressed as nuns wrestling in a tub of jello, you don't have much past competition.

There's also custom production going on: if your thing is Japanese women dressed as nuns wrestling in a tub of jello, there are people out there who can make it for you (for quite a price).

The problem isnt so much that people are accessing produced porn for free. Modern cameras/cellphones/and the ease of making websites means there are tons of site out there that offer user-created videos for free.

For people who dont even like commercial-grade porn, its great times to live in.
