I always thought they sold their soul to the Devil. After that, getting Mom 'n Pop stores to pay for worthless ads was easy.

I knew one saleswoman that always had a little T&A action going on to help her with sales. She would go out to problem clients and come back with a signed contract. Lotsa rumors about her. Most of the sales guys had the nice dark fake tans and teeth whiter than a brides gown. But the stations I was at would cycle through sales people like it was nobodys business.

There are lots of salespeople in the world. Tons of them.

The ones who are smart tend to work for companies that sell a well-known, quality product or service that produces tangible and beneficial results. That way, their job is one of educating the customer or prospect, not "selling" them on it. It's playing to their strengths.

Dumb ones end up selling bullshiat to other idiots, who can't tell the difference anyway.

I don't know whether it's the boss or the ex-employee, but someone here is clearly nuts.
2014-01-15 09:50:48 AM
I don't know what I would do if all the girls here in the office wanted to blow a couple lines and then go down om me...but complaining would probably be pretty low on the list.

I always thought the battle was Sales Guy vs Web Dude (some nsfw language)

Women using their "charms" to get ahead in business is not unique to to broadcasting/sales.

I used to work in broadcasting so am getting a kick.

But, yeah, the field is pretty much stocked full of egoists, backstabbers and bullshiaters. Not very much fun once the veneer rubs off.

What's the difference between a bikini cruise and a cruise?
2014-01-15 09:59:09 AM
1) Your job is to party and have sex, and you're complaining about it?

2) "Gomorrah-like work environments"?

OK, I can see how that might be a problem.

Gary Hart's presidential aspirations.

Would it be sexist for me to imply that this is not unique to broadcasting and that this sort of thing is quite typical for female salespeople, and especially female sales managers?

10 to 1 the dude is gay... just saying.

Well, if he said Sodom-like work environments, it would have involved a male sales force.

Ya, I bet he's hot, too. We need pics!

For those who don't know, WOIO 19 "Action" news is like a combination of TMZ and FOX News.
No surprise here.

My last company had an apartment for the remote sales folks to stay in when in town. The idea is it was cheaper than a hotel. The reality was the place ended up where the sales guys would go bang the sales girls.

Pharmaceutical reps.

I'm just going to lay that there.

Minus the hookers - they kept that function in-house. (Never outsource your core competency!)

John Buck 41: I always thought they sold their soul to the Devil. After that, getting Mom 'n Pop stores to pay for worthless ads was easy.

Oddly enough...

A few months back, gf and I were driving through rural CT. We wanted breakfast and we were listening to a local radio station. It ran an ad for a diner. We stopped and ate there.

If not for the ad we wouldn't have known about it.

This is Cleveland. Why did I Google the station. It's frickin' cold and snowing there. Lake Erie is n't frozen yet but there's time.

Ms Pando is no Dorothy Fuldheim who managed to interview Hitler, Mussolini (before WWII), Jerry Rubin, and her on-air comment during the Kent State shootings was priceless. She was the first woman to have an indepth-TV news show (eat your heart out Colbert)

I'm having a hard time understanding why somebody would be so upset about all this.  After this story broke, I wonder how many resumes they have received.

that sounds about right...

Having worked in the industry for 25 years I can tell you that this is not an uncommon occurance. I've know several sales type people at broadcast stations who regularly traded "favors" for contracts. It was pretty well known that they did, but was overlooked because money talks.
I will say the majority of the sales force was not like this but there are always 1 or 2 that take on that "anything to succeed" mentality and usually do get promoted to management.
2014-01-15 01:22:26 PM
Staff parties included an event on a boat owned by a major client in which female staff were 'cavorting' in bathing suits.

I'm sorry, but I think we're going to need to see just what this "cavorting" looked like before we can pass judgement on the matter.

/csb time?
Opened up a photo studio many eons ago, in a town up North.  Was visited by a very attractive sales rep from a local radio station wanting to sell me some ad packages.  I really didn't jump in right away, to my benefit.  I was fetted over nice dinners followed by handjorbs, visits to the backroom of the studio for amazing bjs.  Her place for soul-destroying deep-dicking.
Somewhere in there a commercial agreement was signed, and acted upon.  They did a good job, too!

If you have commissioned employees, you know rules and laws will be broken.
It may have once been an unintended surprise, but not for decades now.

But, hey, the benefits accrue to the company, for their employees' misdeeds.
So why *wouldn't* someone just turn a blind eye and hide behind plausible deniability?
2014-01-15 01:43:16 PM
Funny, I never saw this happen in "Anchorman"

Sixteen year radio veteran here...the last nine years as a copywriter and production director wherein I worked very closely with the sales staff..

Usually the women were the top billers each month. Maybe not always but they were usually three out of the top five.

They used to make reference to something called "The Blowjob Close". At first I thought it was just sales staff humor but after working with some of those women for a few years, it seemed much more likely to have some basis in reality. One sales woman had allegedly slept with two of her sales co-horts AND the sales manager. She flashed me her tits once at a company Christmas party, so there's that...

/whores, all of 'em!

Came here for the old familiar fark snark.  Was not disappointed.

It sounds awfully douchey to say "huh huh huh dude must be teh ghei," but I can't think of any other thing that would make this work environment hostile.

I mean, seriously--yes.  I know it's bad, but  yes.

Was homeboy just jealous he didn't have the skillset to pull in what his female colleagues were pulling in?  "Professionalism" couldn't have been the case--regardless of how dignified or professional he probably thinks he seems by encouraging these practices to change, the nature of the business means he's probably hurt his chances of getting paid anywhere else.

Some mofos always tryin' to ice-skate uphill.

When I was a product manager I was working for an Aussie lady who had previously been in sales. After the Christmas party we wound up at my place, along with some other hanger on, because I had a real good connection in the building. Anyway, I said she could crash in my bed and I'd sleep on the couch. She proceeded to take her clothes off entirely, said "suit yourself" and jumped in bed with the door open.

I went in there, and she sold me 17 subscriptions to Field and Stream.

I worked at a local radio station for a time, as on-air talent. There was nothing more disappointing to me than learning that the Station Manager had come from the Sales side, rather than On-Air.

Except for when I realized that he'd fight like hell to keep his sales staff, but would replace his on-air in a heartbeat.

And then even moreso when he took over as Program Director.

I worked for a high-end consulting company on an assignment where we really screwed up, big time. Corporate had to send out a "sales specialist" to smooth things out. I was surprised to find out she was a 29 year old woman. To her credit, she managed to save the account with a virtuoso ummm "sales" job in front of a hardened group of executives in a Green Bay Packer skybox one Sunday.
