Subby, groups like ACORN never actually go away. They just lay low, hiding in the scrub and brush, waiting for the right moment...just the right moment...the precisely right moment to emerge. And then they burst forth in a sudden explosion of energy, like a...like a...well, I can't really think of a good metaphor right now, it's early, but like something big that comes out of something small. But the point here is that once that happens, we're all well and rightly farked, so what's needed is constant vigilance.

Maybe we've been thinking about this all wrong, and it's NOT Obama who has a magical time machine, but the GOP.

I don't think defunding it is going far enough.  I think they need to hack ACORN to pieces, burn it down to ashes and salt the earth so it can never emerge again.  And then of course, exorcise the ghosts.  And then do it again every couple months, just in case.

But remember, it's Obama who's politcally targeting his perceived enemies.  Is there any criticism the republicans leveled in say 6 years that isn't steeped in 10 gallons of 180 proof hypocrisy?

Bring the troops home from Vietnam while you're at it, GOP.

2014-01-15 10:25:05 AM
The depressing thing is that Republican leadership justifies this by saying that they have new members since the last time they voted on the issue and those members deserve to be able to go home and say they voted a certain way on fringe issues regardless of if the votes were even related to genuine policy.

Is this like some RPG where despite vanquishing the enemy about 35% of the way through the game, their spirit lingers on until some elemental force reincarnates them for the final showdown?

Is ACORN Earth, Wind, Fire or Water?

Doesn't matter - the GOP has defunded them in so many ways, they'll never reincarnate!

Well, let me help you..

See, an ACORN lays low, out of sight, under the leaves and detritus of the forest floor. You may not even realize it's there anymore. But give it a little sun, little water, and you will get a sapling. That sapling then will grow like a mighty OAK (Organizers Against Klan-members), and then good luck ever taking that down.

Yeah, I know.  I know that motivates the absolutist position of some republicans.  But I honestly haven't heard a criticism that didn't sound like deep-seated projection in years.

They also state:
"...or its subsidiaries or successors."

How do you determine a successor? What if I (who has NEVER been affiliated with ACORN) come up with an organization whose goal is identical to ACORN but called Freedom Uniters Concentrating on Knowledge or something to that affect? Hell, what if I took their exact charter word-for-word and made it mine? How will they determine that I'm a successor? Is no one allowed to help people vote?

FTFA: four provisions that block funding to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, an anti-poverty activist group better known as ACORN.

Why only four?

FTFA: House GOP has voted 13 times since the organization disbanded to block its funding.

With only 13 votes one must question Congressional Republicans commitment to defunding ACORN.

What about an omnibus bill to eliminate everything that doesn't exist:

- Sharia law in US courts
- death panels

- telepathic theft of intellectual property

006deluxe: What's the likelihood that they're just copying/pasting this shiat from past bills and not even realizing it?

Pretty high.  Rather than have to write hundreds or thousands of pages for new legislation when all they're really doing is changing a few things from the last go-around would be a ridiculous waste of time, so they just load up the previous version, make the changes they agreed on, and leave the rest as-is.

This, of course, is me giving Congress the benefit of the doubt, which they probably don't deserve.
