Great Odins Raven: This is why we laugh when cops get shot.
Bedstead Polisher: I think it should be drilled into cops that if someone is not cooperating (and is non-violent) they should go through a checklist to see if that person is physically impaired (blind/deaf) or possibly suffering from a diabetic shock or something. You hear too many of these stories where cops knee-jerk that the person not listening to them starts to get a beatdown. I know that it's probably a small statistic, but I'm sure it would probably avoid situations like this.
mciann: Folks, it's not rocket science. When a cop makes a stop, comply. The details can be worked out later in a court of law. But when a cop is just trying to do their job, comply with their instructions.
The One True TheDavid: But, you know, it's probably wrong to prejudge and hate people based solely on what they do for a living. Even the po-po. Isn't it?
nyrB: Maybe I'm missing something, but how is it legal for "profoundly deaf" people to drive? How can they react to various things like cars beeping because they're drifting into the wrong lane or an emergency vehicle's siren? It seems to me it would be the equivalent of a person driving with noise-cancelling headphones on, which I'm pretty sure isn't kosher.
labman: I had a friend who was deaf in one ear and had only 20% hearing in the other ear who got pulled over for speeding. Naturally, his deaf ear faced the window so when the cop came up and was talking to him, he was trying to use his hand to block the cops flashlight so he could read his lips. the cop kept saying put down your hands, but then he didn't know what he was saying.Eventually, the cop got frustrated and was like "What are you, Deaf?" really loud. That he heard, so he turned his head and pointed to his hearing aid in the other ear and said "YES."The cop got this really sheepish look and just gave him a warning./csb
The One True TheDavid: Once a state cop in Arizona threw me on the hood and jammed his .357 into the back of my neck because I not only didn't immediately comply but also stepped forward with my hands in the air to say "What?"
The case went to the Oklahoma County District Attorney and any details of this case will have to come from the DA's office.
Mitch Taylor's Bro: brandent: cop thread 3 days in a row.Isolated incidents.
Nana's Vibrator: I'd never heard the term "profoundly" deaf before. Can't hear anything below 95 decibels. So I learned something today at the expense of a victim of police brutality. It was all worth it.

nekom: Oh, he's black. Who would have guessed that. I'm whiter than sour cream and I can't stand the police, I can't even imagine how a black man feels in this country.
