Cops should stay out of harms way and stop pulling people over, it's their own fault for voluntarily placing themselves in danger do the honorable thing and go home and suck start their sidearm.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how is it legal for "profoundly deaf" people to drive?   How can they react to various things like cars beeping because they're drifting into the wrong lane or an emergency vehicle's siren?  It seems to me it would be the equivalent of a person driving with noise-cancelling headphones on, which I'm pretty sure isn't kosher.

Good thing he didn't try to use sign language, otherwise, a gangbanger might shot him, while he was getting his ass kicked by the cops.  This is another example showing that people with disabilities can have exciting lives, too.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.  I usually hate cop-hate threads but this increases in police incompetence resulting in senseless violence towards civilians is disturbing.

On your way. Nothing to listen to here, citizen.

gopher321: "I see"...said the blind man.
"No you don't"...said the mute.
"Yes he does"...said the deaf man.
And the man with no legs got up and walked away.

So that's how that joke went. Learned something new today.

Deaf drivers can get devices that let them know when an emergency vehicle is approaching or if someone is honking. But honestly, it's not needed. Using your eyes is enough for driving.

ToastTheRabbit: This is legal now per California ruling. Why are they investigating?

Sigh.

All because the DA didn't fight the defense use of force expert who showed the video frame by frame which showed:

See there, the suspect was hit and then the suspect head moved towards the officer so the officer had no choice to continue attempting to restrain the suspect until the suspect quit moving

/disregard physics that sometimes body parts will bounce off concrete when enough force is applied

"NewsChannel 4 learned on Tuesday the two Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers involved, Eric Foster and Kelton Hayes, have been suspended with pay while the investigation into this incident continues."

What other occupation where beating the shiat out of, or shooting someone results in a paid vacation? Charges against the cops dismissed/acquittal in 3... 2...

I'm not a cop hater. I know a couple that are genuinely good guys. These are not these kinda guys, though.

They're getting what they deserve. They give us the "thin blue line" where even the "good" cops close ranks and prevent a bad cop from being punished for his crimes. That makes them all dirty and corrupt.

rnatalie: fireclown: Should a deaf guy be driving a car in the first place?  He won't be able to hear a horn or siren.

Not hearing asshats blowing horns is probably a plus.
Sirens are accompanied by flashing lights.   I suspect deaf drivers are more vigilant about those.

However, you wouldn't want them chatting with their passengers. It's worse than texting.

There are deaf-specific rules in many states. One I remember is the requirement for a mirror on both sides in addition to a rear-view mirror.

Nowadays I think that's pretty common, but you used to see cars with a side-mirror only on the driver's side.

Bedstead Polisher: I think it should be drilled into cops that if someone is not cooperating (and is non-violent) they should go through a checklist to see if that person is physically impaired (blind/deaf) or possibly suffering from a diabetic shock or something. You hear too many of these stories where cops knee-jerk that the person not listening to them starts to get a beatdown. I know that it's probably a small statistic, but I'm sure it would probably avoid situations like this.

Your mistake here is assuming that the police are trying to AVOID beatdowns.  From what I can gather over the last couple of threads, they're fairly chomping at the bit to beat the crap out of people.

Cops are farking trash these days. Even the "good" ones are only just not openly hostile at that moment. Once it's a matter of taking the side of what's right or taking the side of their brothers-in-blue they will turn on you, too, and lie in court about it later.

And what steps an impaired person might be likely to take to facilitate communication.

However, I have my doubts about this case.  This apparently started with the guy leaving the scene of an accident.  That's not the actions of a good guy.

labman: I had a friend who was deaf in one ear and had only 20% hearing in the other ear who got pulled over for speeding.  Naturally, his deaf ear faced the window so when the cop came up and was talking to him, he was trying to use his hand to block the cops flashlight so he could read his lips.  the cop kept saying put down your hands, but then he didn't know what he was saying.

Eventually, the cop got frustrated and was like "What are you, Deaf?" really loud.  That he heard, so he turned his head and pointed to his hearing aid in the other ear and said "YES."

The cop got this really sheepish look and just gave him a warning.

/csb

Tell your friend to start out by indicating that he's deaf!

Latinwolf: The One True TheDavid: Once a state cop in Arizona threw me on the hood and jammed his .357 into the back of my neck because I not only didn't immediately comply but also stepped forward with my hands in the air to say "What?"

I take it you didn't know that you're not supposed to step out of your car until the cop tells you to do so and instead you attempted to provoke him because only a complete moron would think that your actions as described was not an attempt at provoking an aggressive situation.

Agreed.  That looks like an aggressive action to the cop.

Great Odins Raven: This is why we laugh when cops get shot.

This. Seriously. And I'm no ITG, and I have no criminal record and I've never done anything illegal but I'm also sick to death of what is happening with cops in this country and I don't see any reason to be sad when that rare one gets some comeuppance any more than I see reason to cry about a violent end to a mobster. It's the life they chose and they almost certainly had it coming.

Wouldn't be hard considering.

Yeah, because when the trained professionals are terrible at their job, it's time for untrained non-professionals to stand up and make matters worse.

What's the worse that could happen?  They shoot up a truck driven by a Mexican woman while hunting for a rogue cop driving a different model?

Either the cop wants a paid vacation, or the man was barking.

Well maybe in your case. To judge an entire group by the actions of a very small portion of that group is incredibly stupid and shows a sever lack of thought. Its the same as someone saying all blacks are thieves or all Jews are cheapskates. Its ignorant stupidity and removes any credibility you could have had. I would guess you have had run ins with the police that werent on a friendly basis before.

Counterpoint: Blacks and Jews generally don't have much say in the matter of whether or not they're black or Jewish. For the most part, they don't start out as high school jocks and/or bullies who decide that they want to get paid to beat people up for no good reason, they don't have to go through an obstacle course and firing range in order to get their Black Person or Jewish Person certification, and if they were to kill someone they wouldn't be "punished" with a paid vacation.

Pretty much what King said.

But to be clear, the statement "it's probably wrong to prejudge and hate people based solely on what they do for a living." is just moronic. So I shouldn't prejudge Burglars, Pirates and Grifters simply on there chosen profession. The fact you can't differentiate between prejudice based on race and prejudice based on profession illustrates your "ignorant stupidity and removes any credibility you could have had."

You probably have a point somewhere that I'd concede. Let's see if you're smart enough to articulate it.

the shoot first mentality has infected all police officers & is truly disgusting!
