Well that's...

/just a big beetle?
//seriously... I expected a bit more awesome there

2014-01-15 01:07:08 AM
So a Beetle with a built in ski rack.

/Am I missing something?

2014-01-15 01:25:38 AM
Well, that's a delicate flower of a car. If this thing ever goes into production, I'll bet money that it will be front-wheel drive, without a 4WD option.

No rear engine? No exhaust snorkel? No deal.

2014-01-15 02:45:19 AM
Y'know, because nobody who skis has a pickup, an suv, or a Subaru

2014-01-15 04:31:16 AM
Can't wait to see a crying sorority girl on her phone calling her Daddy to rescue her after she high centers her Beetle Dune on a particularly treacherous speed bump in front of The Galleria.

Dear Subby,

This is the car that everyone is excited about.

Not your silly Volkswagens.

It's already been done... 30+ years ago.

Give it the driveline from one of the hotter versions of the TT and I'll think about it.
Oh, and manufacture them some place other than Mexico - 2 beetles with window issues and other annoyances.

2014-01-15 06:45:49 AM
When did 6" of clearance (if that) qualify as capable of handling tough off-road conditions?

2014-01-15 07:25:49 AM
That looks too pretty for any off-roading, even if it could handle anything.

/Had baja bug back in the day
//Now have Jeep Wrangler
///Lives in the desert

Mys big sis had a brand new Beetle Sun Bug.  Damn thing caught on fire, while still in the driveway.  German crap.

90% of the people who would buy this car would never take it off-road.

The other 10% would try, and fail miserably.

/AW cars, that's all.
//Ski-rack! Look at me! I might go skiing somewhere!
///You're not driving your Beetle up the side of the mountain, Chadwick. Let it go.

Mitch Taylor's Bro: Gross.

Here to post `crap`

jtown: When did 6" of clearance (if that) qualify as capable of handling tough off-road conditions?

When `tough off road` means driving up the kerb to park on the grass when you pick up your spawn from school while dreaming about skiing.

That or driving from the carpark to the beach over that 4" obstacle...

Dune Concept Car?

Pssht. You couldn't control the spice in one of those things. It'd barely be one gulp for a worm.

It's required for an offroad vehicle to have a roll cage that doesn't fit inside the stock body.

Also, shouldn't dune buggies be RWD? This new beetle would be hilarious in sand.

I read that as Beetle Dung concept car.

Anyone else?

I don't know what it is, but while I love the aesthetics of the classic Beetle, the new Beetle just doesn't do it for me.

The word you're looking for is "quattro".

Sorry, it's a VW so it's "4motion".

Best AWD system ever designed.

The company bills it as a 21st century of the Baja Bug, which is a modified Beetle that can handle tough off-road conditions, like the deserts of Baja, California.

As long as those "tough off-road conditions" don't include bumps higher than about 4", it appears... What a piece of crap. Nothing special about this.

Call me when someone starts making this...

Thing has got to be a serious gas hog... Two engines, but it would be a freaking blast. 3 steering modes.

The new one was OK, I didn't think it was as good, but it was a good throwback.

Then they redesigned the farkjng thing, now it has nothing special going for it.

Big rims and low profile tires? Good luck off road.

2014-01-15 08:59:59 PM
They still have the engine in the wrong damn end.

In that configuration, you'd be looking at a solid 0 mpg.

Technically, that's not correct. Even though it would sit in the same physical location, the tires wouldnstill benturmong and travelling the distance of that circle over and over...

Besides, that can be turned off, and the thing can have 'regular' 4 wheel steering as well as two wheel steering.
