The Great War is underestimated in its impact on global civilization.  While both the cool and the sad tag work here, I think it is sad these men died for next-to-nothing, and are only now getting the chance at a proper burial.

AverageAmericanGuy: Cool. Not sad.

Thousands of young, probably mostly southern Italian kids being stripped away from their homes are scared shiatless and shipped up to Austria to be sent into machine gun fire up ice covered mountains to be slaughtered or freeze to death for absolutely no reason. On top of the mountain are thousands of young, probably Slovenian kids killing and dieing and watching their friends limbs get blown off by icoming arterially and freezing to death themselves for an empire they could give a shiat less about.

Hundreds of thousands of kids slaughtering hundreds of thousands of other kids they've never met and have nothing against for absolutely no reason at all, and 100 years later some fat asshole on an Internet forum sitting a temperature controlled room sees their frozen corpses and thinks its not sad at all and is cool.

This is my last thought before going to bed tonight.

(Actually, my last thought is that you'll die a horrible death and years from now some other fat asshole on some other Internet forum will look at your corpse and think that it's cool, but I didn't want to say that in front of everyone else)

Wow, it must have been really warm during WWI...followed by 100 years of cold.

Of course that fits the global warming narrative perfectly, right? Atmospheric CO2 levels  peaked in 1914, and then went to a minimum for 40+ years, and is finally back over 1918 levels. Right? Right?

organizmx: Hundreds of thousands of kids slaughtering hundreds of thousands of other kids they've never met

One of the innumerable utterly awful things about this battle is that they were frequently fighting kids they'd not merely met but were related to. This is also an area where a 'dad's army' took a major part in conflict, with the result that single families lost children, fathers, and grandfathers. The tensions set in place by WW1 still afflict the Südtirol.

20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing. If only the rulers of Europe in 1914 had had your amazing omniscience and Delphic foresight. Here's hoping that you are looking ahead to avoid whatever horrible death is awaiting YOU in the future and miraculously manage to avoid it through your Nostradamus-like wisdom and Magic-8-ball window into the future.

Waste of good manual labour, IMHO.

It's odd that a man whose father was a master tactician and whose son was a hero of the resistance was not only a complete shiatbag (although the Raffaeles may well have got a pass for their personal flaws in light of their military competences) but also an utterly useless soldier.

oh, sorry. I must have missed the fark headlines about the food riots and this past decade being devoid of snow. Perhaps that news was buried by the stories of ski resorts opening ~1 month early due to early snow storms.

I'd be interested to read about both of those events. Have any links, or are you running on derp this morning?

Yeah, but most folks call it the Napoleonic Wars and started the numbering system later. Do try to keep up.

Well at least they died for the good of humanity, and Europe has been at blissful peace ever since.

Next time you see a gathering of politicians or any kind of government 'leaders' surrounded by pomp and circumstance remember that it's very easy for these pampered, privileged members of our society to have some 'beef' with their counterparts in other countries and start wars simply because they are just too pig-headed to work out their differences in an amicable fashion. (Or, they feel inadequacies in other wars)

Perhaps it's due to the fact that we often erroneously consider wisdom to come with age as the majority of out leaders are middle-aged and older - but with age comes a reduction in 'lateral' thinking and creativity meaning one loses the ability to see the big picture and just stubbornly clings to ideas simply because they are 'old' or 'traditional'.

The smart leaders realize this and step down before any decisions from their ossified brains cause any damage. You see this more often in business than for countries..Bill Gates is a good example of an aging leader stepping down at a good time. Steve Balmer is an example of the stubborn leader who overstayed his welcome.

So the upshot is that young people are sent to die horribly because a bunch of stubborn old coots couldn't work things out with other stubborn old coots...the old meme about "get off my lawn" in international affairs.

Perhaps extending our lives will actually become our undoing.

That must have been wonderful. I have some Swiss roots (along with the Irish, German, and Creole) and would love to hike in the Alps.

I have only been to Europe once. I took a student tour when I was in high school. This was beofre Oetzi but I did see the Lindow Man in London. The Swiss stop was Lucerne, which was beautiful.

Maybe instead you'll be entertained by the fact that 2013 was the hottest year in Australian history, and  water bottles melt on the court at the Australian Open.
