that episode was basically a 'Previously on Archer' four-season recap as said by the characters... then what appeared to be a long promo for the rest of the season.

i was not sure i actually watched an actual episode when the short 18 minute run-time was finished.

This. Stylish? Daring? Yes. Lacking meat? Definitely.

But at least it wasn't Chozen. Awful.

OK, I'll admit the show is amusing, and Cheryl/Carol is farking hot for an animated character, but good God the autistic/tourettes-like quoting of every single line on the show, even the ones that aren't funny, is insufferable. Case in point: the ants line referenced in the headline. Why is that funny? I've never found it funny. Tell me why being overzealous about ants is so funny!

So that was as bad as I thought it looked. Glad I changed it to Rick and Morty after Archer.

i did in fact watch Chozen after this Archer... and... yeeeah. thinking it'll last about as long as that Black Dynamite series that i gave up on after like 2 episodes.

Threads like this, and Supertroopers, exist so that the farkers like me can subconsciously signal to each other that we are in each other's tribe. Our need to belong is strooooooonng. It also signals "hey, remember that time you were happy and laughing? I was there with you happy and laughing"

Or something something danger zone.

But back to the episode. I loved the narritive structure: The show used to be about that, now it is about this.

also... i'm not saying i disliked the episode. it did actually remind me of a few plot points i totally forgot about.

i was mainly saying it seemed more like something they made this summer to show the FX bosses what the plans were for this season and then decided a few weeks ago... 'well shiat... we can pad this out a couple more minutes to the bare minimum needed and just air it!'

of course... it might end up that they pick up right after everything in the 'preview' end-portion and never reference any of it again. or go completely different yet similar ways that will make it much funnier to re-view when the season ends. that also would not surprise me. at all really.

I thought about that too, but the AVClub article says that next week takes place in Cheryl? Tunt's mansion where she becomes a country star etc...

The premiere was definitely a "table setting" episode. The ending montage made it worth watching (for me at least). I hope everything in that montage makes it into the forthcoming season.

Black Dynamite actually was funny. A couple of strikeouts here and there, but it had a hell of a pilot to live up to.

The contrast of a mundane office squabble about ants with the dangerous, exciting life if spies?

They're changing the premise?

What, like Battlestar Galactica Season 3?

2014-01-15 07:02:39 AM
Tearing down the whole premise of your show and turning your characters into international drug traffickers is...bold, to say the least. Archer is one of the few shows that can pull it off. As Archer said in a promo I saw last night, "We're like the A Team! Except we sell drugs."

It's the juxtoposition of not caring about important stuff while losing your shiat over trivial concerns. Giving unequal weight to various problems is a comedy staple that Archer (the show and the character) thrives on. The show's hero doesn't care if he gets shot, tortured, stabbed, captured, discovered or any of those serious things, but if he catches one mook wearing a turtleneck -- a fashion style that he invented so how dare they -- then he loses his god damn mind. Leaking sensitive classified documents to the enemy? Meh. Spilling a drink in the common room? THAT'S HOW YOU GET ANTS!!!

So it's not the line itself that's funny, it's the importance placed upon it when juxtoposed with everything else going on.

Exactly, I watched it twice.  That had me really pumped for the upcoming season.

Does anyone else think that the AV Club takes themselves too seriously sometimes?  Come on Todd, you're reviewing a TV show.

I'm also excited about this for the potential of new material.

Seasons 1-3 were great and while season 4 was good, it was mostly retelling the same jokes with a wink to the audience.  You'll notice that most of the lines people quote in these threads are not from S4

On one hand, the episode was very light on content, mostly review/preview. Yet, on the other hand, I enjoyed everything I saw. I hope they dig in come the next episode.

Adding to the juxtaposition of trivial/serious humor, I think I'll add that I can't get enough of what seem like throwaway obscure references or background lines that, when viewed again(or if looked up online), turns out to be a much more intelligent joke than previously understood.

Was that when Malory just chucked a handful of pills at her? If so, I remember that, but it's not like she was popping them every time she showed up was she? I only paid half attention last night, may have to watch it again.

A quick Google didn't bring up anything, anybody have any idea when season 4 is supposed to hit Netflix? FX seems to never play reruns, even though they have for full seasons of episodes. I might wager that part of the reason season 4 isn't referenced as much as l -3 is because it isn't on Netflix.

Agreed! The movie was one of THE funniest I had ever seen at the time. Watching "Black dynamite" made me miss "The Boondocks"!

But "Chozen"...ugh! I hope it gets canceled quick! It wasn't funny and relied on the whole "Gays are predatory" message, which is bullshiat.

Lacking any official information, then we have to go by when season 3 was released, which was in March as best as I can tell.
