To be fair to Selig, Gary Bettmen and Roger Goodell have made him look entirely competent in comparison, so it's not like he can't go "Hey, at least I'm not Gary Bettman" and not have people go "Well, he does have a point".

Just think of the poor intern that has to tell him "No, I think they are saying 'Buuuuddddd', sir." 30 times next year.

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't get booed in Milwaukee.

I don't think there's a single commissioner of a single pro sports league who isn't widely considered the "Worst Comish Ever!" up until the day he dies/retires and his successor inherits that title.

Actually this guy (current CFL commish Marc Cohon) has done a hell of a job.  can't really find anyone who has something bad to say about what he's done.

Eh, Selig's all right.   Could have done more to force the NL to stop playing retro-ball though.

You know, I can't really complain: without Selig the Mariners would be in Tampa or Lost Wages, the KingDome might still be crumbling downtown, and  Ichiro-san would never have graced our shores.

there aren't many fans of Selig, but compared to Goodell, Bergman and Stern.. yeah..

Eh, why not? I mean it's not like the legacy of the guy who thought it was a good idea to wage two simultaneous land wars in Asia while paying for those wars with IOUs could possibly be tarnished any further, dead hooker/live boy scenarios or lethal "Hey, y'all, watch this!" stunts notwithstanding.

Isn't Bettman just the puppet of some governing hockey council?  I think they are like the Illuminati only they drink Molson and have denim robes.

They all are.

They get paid to carry out the will of the obscenely wealthy people that own the teams, which are usually good for them and not for the players and fans. This isn't meant to excuse them for being awful, because they typically are, but I think it's worth pointing out that the entire purpose of the job is to make and/or announce unpopular decisions and take flak off the people who are actually in charge.

Having said all that, Bud Selig can go suck a fat one.

2014-01-15 01:15:42 AM
I bet people will be juiced to let Bud know what an all-star he is.

Bud the Chudd presided over the juicing age, allowed an entire generation of ball to be corrupted by drugged up cheaters, and acted like he had no idea when any idiot by the mid 1990s could see something was drastically wrong. ESPN rode the homer pony well into the 00's then suddenly turned self-righteous.

Fark Bud because of

1) The Juicing Era
2) The 1994 Season
3) Counting the all-star game

Comparing him to sh*thead criminals like Stern in no way excuses the very real problems that he did cause.

Despite their near-univeral hatred, Selig and Stern have overseen periods of tremendous growth in their sports' popularity and profitability. The steroids issue will be a big cloud over Selig's reign, but aside from that he's done a pretty damn good job.

Plusses:
-Increased baseball's overseas popularity, and ushered in a more multi-national game where we see players from Japan and Latin/Caribbean America
-Brought us the excellent MLB network
-Instituted new and better revenue sharing agreements that helped slow down what was a widening gap in payroll disparity
-Instituted the wild card and Interleague play, both big plusses in my opinion (although traditionalists hate them, they both increase baseball's profitability and add excitement for the fans)
-Handled the Dodgers ownership dispute perfectly, and got the team a much better ownership situation
-Finally bringing some form of instant replay
-Jackie Robinson Day
-A number of new, more profitable and more beautiful baseball stadiums built

Neutral, but notable:
-World Baseball Classic
-Homefield advantage in the WS decided by all-star game
-Moving the expos, adding the Rays/D'Backs, realigning the divisions twice

Bad:
-Steroid controversy, and an entirely after-the-fact and slow reaction to introduce testing
-Playoffs creeping into November
-Not handling the ownership situation with the Mets

Granted, I don't *like* Selig. But he's done what is unquestionably his job: he's expanded the sport and he's made it more profitable.

If I'm remembering correctly, Buds first visit to Oakland wasn't until the early 00's. The A's owners were begging him to come look at the shiatty hand they had been playing with. So, I believe this will be his second visit there.

/rumor is that he left in the 5th inning.

Bud Selig killed baseball in Montreal. Everything about how that went down is farking shameful, and how that scumbag Loria continues to run the Marlins to this day is a disgrace. The current franchise Bud is destroying is the Oakland A's by effectively keeping them from getting a new stadium.

Let's also not forget his repeated violations of federal labor law.

Well, hes certainly going to be beloved in yankeetown after that hatchet job he pulled on justice over the weekend to save the yankees 25M so far and eventually 60 more.

/ dont think for a SECOND this is far fetched.  That is a lot of money.

Loria should be dropped out in the middle of the ocean.

He also let an over-leveraged parking lot attendant buy the Dodgers in the first place, allowed its neighbor to turn its back on its very own market, and closed his eyes as the Marlins binged and purged three times. I'm just glad it failed last time.

Because it *still* beats Alternating Field.

Yes, it should be the combined Interleague Play records with the ASG as a tie breaker but small steps.

As for Montreal and LA, there's a lot of backdoor politics (and lawsuits) all over the place. The old baseball weekly used to cover them. (Paul White's career can RIP). I'll keep Bud Selig's time. He was right more often than he was wrong - and he's better than Goodell, Stern, and Bettmen

Today? None. Rozelle was loved, as was Giamatti (even before he passed on). Ueberroth departed on good terms, even with the collusion accusations.
