The gun was in a band instrument case?
The kid was described as a smart kid?

I'm not saying the victim was probably a bully, but

Then he shot up in the sky,

Did he shout "Aaaaah!"?

He ran to the gym, where he pulled a gun out of a band instrument case and fired at the students.

And I'm not saying the kid didn't also have an undiagnosed/closeted-by-his-parents mental condition, but

Definitely sounds like a bullying incident from the way it's described. Single target, gun gets dropped by the perp once he's shot his target. Definitely not a random rampage.

Latest reports say it wasn't a gun. There now identifying it as a dry cleaning bag filled with marsh gas.

The world is full of bullies.  You need to grow up and learn to tough it out, cry baby.  What's that?  You gonna cry?  You gonna cry, baby.  Yeah!  Cry baby!  Cry!  HA HA HA!

I heard it was a retired cop who was mad that a kid was texting his mother during a school play.

I'm thinking this depiction might not be inaccurate.  There are some dumb shiats in the band.  This one who decided it was a good idea to shoot up a school is no exception.
The bullying part might be true, though.

Great! another shooting at a school!  So the inevitable trolling will occur now....where did he get the gun? why did he shoot the ones he did?  did his parents know about the gun?  was he bullied?  Does all of that matter?  This kid did something he knew to be wrong and illegal and he had access to a firearm.  He should be prosecuted and his parents should too.  I have middle school age kids and firearms, but the firearms are secured in a safe and the kids wouldn't and more importantly COULDN'T get to them if they wanted.  As for bullies, there have always been bullies in school, but we didn't shoot them!  Argh this is so frustrating as a parent to hear of this kind of stuff.

According to ABQ Journal the weapon was a shotgun. Two rounds in the face.

I was surprised that it wasn't at NMMI in some Full Metal Jacket bathroom scene with some cadet.

Of everything in your post that every parent of a shooter has said at one time "my kids wouldn't and COULDNT ever get to them if they wanted" is top of the list.

I hope for your sake that is a true statement and not just hubris on your part.

I live in Roswell, and I work for the newspaper (both facts verifiable if you email me)

The police aren't reporting something.  The initial call mentioned at least one dead, and we have a co-worker (well, a person in the back of the house who folds the papers) who tells us it's her nephew, and he definitely didn't make it.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have him do?   Authorities (school or gov't) are powerless, anti-bullying campaigns are a joke, and the kid isn't going to become Charles Atlas overnight so that he could defend himself.

It might have been an overreaction. The male victim was shot twice in the face, and probably appeared dead at the scene but is actually in critical. Or someone died. Guess we'll find out in a follow-up.
