Set aside nationalism for the Olympics? Hell, my country has a govt funded program called "own the podium" and in committed to increasing our medal count every time.

IMO this is utterly insulting to the athletes who don't win medals. They're still the super elite, who have dedicated their lives to sport, but omg if you don't come in first you are nobody. Fu#k the Olympics and every country, including mine, that uses it as an international dick-slapping competition.

It's supposed to be a dick-slapping competition. Historically, the whole point is to give nations a venue to compete against each other for honors that doesn't involve (significant) bloodshed.

I don't know what it is but there are a remarkable number of utterly beautiful women in that sport. Or maybe it's just the way the light reflects off the ice. I can't figure it out.

Me, I like the bobsleigh. Because it looks like fun. Or at least it did until I read about a couple of people killed on one after slamming into a pole at 70mph on a poorly built bobsleigh course in what surely must have been Russia.

These Olympics could be great.

The Olympics.
The spectacles of:

Senile old dolts in the IOC picking some of the most out-of-the-way and unprepared places to host the games.
Governments spending millions of taxpayers money to first to woo the IOC and then build what is essentially a nothing more than a vanity project or bragging rights
Expensive infrastructure going to waste following the games.
Sponsors enjoying a marketing orgy
'Security' officers given the opportunity to relentlessly harass spectators at every turn
The inevitable doping scandals
Figure skating,
The lives of the locals being turned upside down - traffic nightmares, people in low-rent housing getting tossed out to the street by greedy landlords...price gouging..small businesses disrupted.

Disgusting...

2014-01-14 12:37:02 PM
No it is about protecting the athletes. Russia has hinted if any gay athletes happen to show or express their "gayness" at any Olympic event (because it is evil to want to share affection with your same sex partner after winning a medal, but fine for hetero couples) they will be punished by Russian law. Whether or not they have the balls to do it is one thing, but right then and there they Olympics should have been moved.

Also, how is it punishing the athletes to still have the Olympics, just in a new location? Many previous Olympic stadiums offered to host after Russia pulled this bullshiat. They could have happened anywhere else, but the committee decided to turn its back on basic human rights while endanger athletes and slobber the knob of Russia just to save face. It was disgusting.

We should screw all the athletes that worked for years for this moment because of political correctness?

This is a tough call. On the one hand, because the USA has just recently reached a level of enlightened acceptance within the past few years means that we are SOOO much better than other cultures that don't develop at exactly the same rate as we do. On the other hand there's my self loathing at being a narrow-minded American. Now I don't know who to cheer for.

I think we all know the correct answer here. We should not watch the Olympics. We should not eat at Chic Fil A. We should not watch Duck Dynasty, and we should do all in our power to stop boys from joining boy scouts. FOREVER! Death to the oppressors!

Subby's too young to know of Olympic boycotts?

No Such Agency: Set aside nationalism for the Olympics? Hell, my country has a govt funded program called "own the podium" and in committed to increasing our medal count every time.

IMO this is utterly insulting to the athletes who don't win medals. They're still the super elite, who have dedicated their lives to sport, but omg if you don't come in first you are nobody. Fu#k the Olympics and every country, including mine, that uses it as an international dick-slapping competition.

hailin: Russia has hinted if any gay athletes happen to show or express their "gayness" at any Olympic event (because it is evil to want to share affection with your same sex partner after winning a medal, but fine for hetero couples) they will be punished by Russian law. Whether or not they have the balls to do it is one thing

I sincerely doubt that Russia has the balls to arrest a member of the American Olympic Team for "gayness." Even other Western nations are only slightly more vulnerable. And you know that the Major Powers would rally around a small nation if one of its athletes was arrested.

This is political posturing - "we'll have our laws, and there's nothing the international community can do about it." More than likely, the Olympics will pass with Russia saying "nope, didn't see anyone acting gay, didn't need to arrest anyone."

Have you ever participated in physical competition with skilled athletes? I was only a middling fighter (back when I wasn't all old and fat) in my martial arts days, and I would have been downright offended at the notion that I "deserved" anything for my efforts. I got pretty high in some tournaments, and enjoyed a lot of bragging rights, but when I got beat, I didn't pout or carry on, and I never saw the best ones do so either.

My point being, their reward is being there, and they're recognized plenty in their own fields, even if they're not plastered all over TV for the sake of Joe Couchpotato or Suzie Cluesless.

I'm gay homosexual and it's been hilarious to read the gay-oriented blogs I go to since the Sochi thing blew up. You have the guys who were bullied by jocks in high school who hate sports no matter what; there's the activists who jump on anything to screech "Homophobia!!!" without knowing a damn thing about the particular situation; then there's the people who are simply hypocrites, the ones who say boycott all companies who sponsor the Sochi Games but when it's pointed out that that person uses at least one product a day from one of those companies say "But......but.......that's different, we have to make our voice heard!!!!".

Then there was the whole "Elton John is the Worst Human Being Ever In The History Of Humans for daring to playing two gigs in Russia" thing. When those talent-free hags Madonna and Gag(a) played there, they were brave guardians of free speech!!!!, but when EJ wouldn't cancel his gigs, he was a money-grubbing Quisling who once played Sun City and said mean things about Madonna. Yes, EJ is a money-grubber and shoots his mouth off to an embarrassing degree, but it was hilarious that when the video of him reading that awesome speech about freedom and gay rights at the Moscow concert showed up, there was crickets, most of the blogs who had spent months ripping him to bits didn't even post it. Most of the assholes criticizing him wanted him to say nothing so they could screech at him about playing Sun City 30 years ago. When I mentioned that their beloved Cher did too, I got a bunch of "But....but.....that was different because she's a beloved gay diva!!!".

When I pointed out that The Gay Community (tm) got its ass kicked on Chik-Fil-A and Duck Dynasty and that the Professional Gay orgs like GLAAD and HRC actually make things worse by jumping all over things that in the grand scheme of things don't amount to a hill of beans in this world, I was roasted for being a closet case (nope, first came out to someone in 1971) or self-loathing (what bullshiat) or a Republican (nope, registered Socialist since 1985).

That's what happens when the professional protesters are more concerned about their internal standing with their colleagues, or being a go-to source for a journalist, than actually making anything happen.  If they solve the problem, then their cushy K Street jobs go away.

There's the group Queer Nation that does protests. It started in the mid-80's and I was part of it for a few months in Los Angeles until they wanted to start protesting things that had nothing to do with being gay. They disappeared but turned up again last year in New York and it was embarrassing: the gay blogs would run breathless coverage of them, like they were the 2012 incarnation of the 2004 anti-war protests and....it turns out that they'd have less than a dozen people show up.

They staggered the Summer/Winter Games in the early 90's.....

There was an extra Winter Games in 94 to set them off....

Albertville, France - 1992

Lillehammer, Norway - 1994

Nagano, Japan - 1998
So now you get one or the other every two years...

i'd be willing to bet that the athletes are just fine and dandy here, unless they BLATANTLY do something designed to piss russia off, and even then it'll most likely just be a diplomatic thing where there's a reprimand issued and they get booted home...

anyone else there for the olympics, however...  last i heard in order to prevent protesting, they've flat out stated they will arrest, fine and deport people...  and i'd be willing to bet they'll have no qualms doing it...

they may be hosting the olympics, but the spectators are still just tourists.
