The problem with this is, every moron who texts and drives thinks they're to good at it for anything like this to happen to them.

I have this crazy idea for a device to help prevent texting while driving accidents. It works by requiring both of the driver's hand to be occupied for proper operation.

Like most safety devices, it is not 100% effective, as some will choose to circumvent the device's functionality, but those people are dumb.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I would think that in 99.99% of accidents, a driver did something wrong to cause it

Texting drivers are more dangerous than drunk drivers.   They're everywhere, all the time, and they have no clue once they are distracted.

I'm shocked at how easily that car rolled over while traveling at such a low speed.

theslowblade: Car_Ramrod: Alexei Novikov: FarkerSnow: I ride a moto and just knock on texting driver's windows and yell at them.

/if I'm bigger than they are.

I usually honk and put my thumb and pinky up to my head like a phone and then point down while shaking my head. It's surprisingly effective. Only aftermarket part I've bothered to put on was a louder horn. I try to remember that motorcycles are just hard to see, but get off the frogdamned phone!

So now instead of them using their phone, they're paying attention to you and your little play. Brilliant.

Yup, and if you give me a pissy face or flip me off I'll take a mirror. You can whine all you want about interacting and distracting the allready distracted till you're blue in the face. Ever use your horn?  same farking thing!

The problem has become so bad that there really is nothing left to be done than to make your own personal contribution to the education of these irresponsible assholes. I can tell you that after one of my "lessons" the driver will at the very least think twice about using that phone behind the wheel. I'm doing these things after I've almost been killed, so safety is moot at this point.

You also might be interested in the advanced course I will be teaching in the spring when people start driving with their windows down "try to get your phone back from the guy on the bike who is allready gone".

Marshmallow Jones: A few weeks ago, I was in my usual heavy-traffic commute, and kept an eye onhis 20-something girl in my rearview mirror who was looking up and then down, then up, then down.  I was sure she was going to drive straight into the back of me, so I switched lanes.   A few minutes later she was a little ahead of me, and she had to do the brake stomp/swerve into the shoulder thing as she was about to hit the person ahead of her.   I drove past her when she started moving again and it looked like she was probably trying to reach the phone on the mat in front of the passenger seat.

If she's still alive it would surprise me.

Happened to me last night on my way home from work. Left lane comes to an abrupt stop, lady behind me is texting her BFF Jill and doesn't notice, continues racing towards me at 50mph+. She must have looked up right before she was about to hit me and noticed it was too late to brake, so she swerved into the HOV lane where she hit another car. That accident looked like it was only cosmetic, but holy hell was I shaken up after almost getting plowed into at that speed.

While I agree having a stick would help, I'm driving a mazda3 6-speed, having bluetooth is even better.
Most current phones will take texts via voice and send them.

/haven't tried it through the cars bluetooth yet, but calling through it is nice.

On Sunday, I was riding and stopped at a red light in a long line of two lanes of cars stopped at the light. Directly to my right, a woman in her 20s was sitting in a Jeep absorbed in text messaging. I was unsure what to do. I figure if I did or said anything, I would basically end up looking like the douche.

the should put a sensor in the middle of steering wheels. If it detects a text being composed within 2 feet while the car is moving, the car gets disabled for 45 minutes. That would be a good incentive not to text.

Egoy3k: Z-clipped: Egoy3k: I'm all for stopping people from texting while driving but this is not a good example why it's wrong. There is no way that anybody that bad at driving wasn't going to wreck their car with or without a cell phone.

It's a perfect example of just how incredibly distracting an activity texting is.

This douchenozzle wasn't even aware of the fact that his car was pointed at a telephone pole, 30 degrees off the intended direction of travel. I don't care how bad a driver someone is, they aren't going to make that mistake without being impaired in some way.

Do you have any idea how often people do text while driving?  It's a lot.  Do many of them drive this poorly? No otherwise your commute would be much more interesting.  This isn't so much a case of texting while driving as it is a case of driving while stupid.

Actually, I probably have a better idea than you do. I drive a motorcycle pretty much exclusively which means a) I sit up high enough to easily see into your window as I pass you, and b) I'm paying much closer attention to driving than you in the first place.

I see 50 people do things just as stupid and distracted as this every time I'm on the road. They just don't usually lead to accidents, because enough of the rest of us are shouldering the burden of care for these assholes.

Driver Michael Woody climbed out of the car safely following the crash and told responding officers that his only impairment was his cell phone ... he was texting while driving, something that is now illegal in Florida.

I've done that, and removed mirrors with a well placed kick. I stopped when it occurred to me that no matter how big I am, their vehicle is always bigger than me, and that's what they're going to hit me with. I know from personal experience that while a minivan is kind of a pussy vehicle, it still sucks to take one to the head.

And I would say most drunk drivers tend to drive 5 miles below the speed limit, both hands on the wheel and looking everywhere due to the fear of getting caught.
