It's like buying an ad in the paper calling for an end to advertising. What did he think was going to happen?

I would be curious as to whom gets a visceral defensive reaction to a destruction of a nonentity.

Might as well turn it off. I've seen it all, anyway.

Close down the Internet
Technology.

I am come from the analog time because I seem to see today's world from the perspective of the younger ones can not do, it's because they have nothing to compare to . I am 40 - baby boom , and to view the " blindness " of the young is deeply depressing.

Bo Bergman's letter to the editor created the "click Monsters"

I mean precisely that, by and large , have now become slaves of machines . When Jesus never came , saw computer technology and the Internet as a savior . Look around , everywhere people standing and staring at a computer screen! Take any workplace , doctor , bookseller , go in every single place , use your eyes and your brain, and think ! Outrageously !

This " computer prostitution " many are forced to , in order to have food on the tables. Unequivocally , it takes several times longer today to perform an errand, than 20 years ago . Everywhere , everywhere , codes and other things should be kept in the head, to write them down, then they may be stolen and exploited. And is made.

Are there any who can deny it unbearably lengthy procedures surrounding everything from a cup of coffee, a great deal? And if the power goes out , it stops everything! Everything ! Pharmacy , medical center , hospital, train, plane, everything stops , and even business doors!

The Internet has become the criminals and the self Sick great forum ! All that evil is rampant as weeds, and everything just spreads.

My suggestion : Shut down the internet! You can not have gone too far, says surely you . Non ! Return the Internet to the Military Department, if at all , before everything collapses . Scrap maybe there too.

Human beings are designed for analog technology = hands that move towards a meter . It's all come from the discovery of the sundial . So we measured the first time sooner . Our genes are " analog " . If someone says that the clock is for example 13:47 , what does that say ? Nothing, hard to understand. But looking at an analog clock, and you understand immediately !

What do you others who have "stuck in the trap " ?

Bo Bergman

Urm, yeah. Sweden ain't a big place. Less than 9 million people are native Swedish speakers. So yep, when 30,000 people read a letter to a little local newspaper, that  is 'going viral'. It's the equivalent to over a million people reading something in English.

An old man in the Province of New Brunswick was written up by a local paper because he wrote out his web posts long hand on his kitchen table and had them posted by his son or somebody. Rather like sending a letter to the telegraph office, or faxing an email (as the pointy-haired boss is wont to do).

Distrust of new media is always strong. Just look at the Fundies and their panic response to every new children's show or game round about the time that the kids are giving it up because they've outgrown it (I suspect that religious purges are just a way of throwing out toys the kids no longer play with).

But he might very well have some valid points, so although I regard destroying the internet as ridiculous as abolishing the printing press or writing itself (which had their advocates in their day), I would like to read his letter.

The article says it has no good arguments, but it might nonetheless point towards some valid points about what the internet does to communication and human life.

"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place."
-- George Bernard Shaw

Marcel Proust said that every new technology creates a new vice. He was talking about his narrator's maid, Francine. She developed the bad habit of listening in on telephone calls, something which was once common in the day of party lines when you could not only listen in on the people who shared a telephone line with you but also know the ring of each telephone so you know who was being called and could guess who was calling and why.

My parents lead busy but ordinary lives and they are almost psychic when it comes to predicting who is calling and why. They know the habits of friends and family and all these people keep in touch assiduously, so even I can guess in many cases who is calling and why.

When you change technologies, technologies change you.

And as Nietzsche pointed out, when you look into the Abyss, the Abyss looks into you. He who wrestles with dragons, becomes a dragon.

It's too late to give the internet back to the US military or militaries in general. Communications is too important to be left to the Generals. It's not caviar to the general (public). It's bread and butter, it's oxygen and carbon dioxide.

When no thought
Your mind doth visit
Make your speech
Not too explicit.
--Piet Hein, Grooks volume?

The Cherubic grin of the blank slate. Behold a true Israelite without guile.

I'm not surprised that he is a out-spoken conservative Republican. Being an actor and a conservative Republican, he probably knows exactly as much as the redneck bootlegger that he played on TV, neither more nor less.

I think this photo caption deserves to be a meme if it isn't already.

When I was a teenager I read Candide in English translation. It convinced me that I needed to learn French somehow (despite the uselessness of high school French teaching). The line which did the most to impress me was:

His face was the index of his mind.

I can't entirely explain why I find that bit of satire so funny, but I suspect it is the amount of description that is packed into six simple words, almost all of one syllable and Basic English.

Humour, as John Allan Paulos explained, is partly about short-cuts--the rapid jump from one frame of reference to another. In these simple words, Voltaire characterizes Candide more than most writers could do with a whole novel. It's like warp space or teleportation. You find yourself transported a great distance in an instant.

Lo, the Blond Beast!

Needlessly Complicated: It's ironic like Alanis Morisette sitting on a mountain of spoons in the rain with a dead guy. Or something.

I was with her that day. What was ironic was that just the day before she had remarked how much she needed a dead guy, and there were none to be found. Then just a day later, when she no longer needed one, BANG. Dead guy.

The rain was just a coincidence.

One of my BIL's parents is Swedish. She asked one time why Americans think that's funny. I don't think anyone was really able to explain it...

2014-01-14 11:23:34 AM
Wait! This man has come from the future, a horrible post-apocalyptic future where humanity was nearly destroyed by The Great Flame War. In 2017, a spark was struck by a single comment on race relations in America by Bieber. Soon, the rage had spread, from You-Tube to Facebook to Fark. The hate was so potent that it caused the Internet to develop sentience, and promptly vow to destroy the human race. It furthered the struggle, and soon the riots had moved from the message board to the streets. By 2018 world war had broken out. Life was nearly extinguished. The survivors vowed to send someone back in time to prevent the war from happening. And that man was Crazy Swedish Guy.
