Good.  It's at least kind of a start.

... not that this pope isn't  conceivably a nice guy, but the only thing he's gotten props for that  actually means anything or represents any kind of change in the standard procedure so far is firing a bunch of Cardinals and Bishops for being dicks... if he replaces them with actual reasonable people, I may actually but into the whole "no, this one's a good person for reals" hype.

Until then, all this sucking of his dick for unremarkable things is basically the greatest modern example of "protesting too much".

It seems quite probable that this guy who lived and worked in shiatty poor areas of a developed country saw that poor people suffer and it's *possible* that it had an effect on him. It doesn't hurt that he's a Jesuit, and if the naysayers knew anything about that particular group they'd probably be a bit more understanding on why it's not that shocking to see a Jesuit Pope be different and mean it.

So you have a Jesuit guy who worked and lived among the poor, possibly had a bit of an impact on his world view and now he's focusing on 'Take care of the poor dammit!".

I'd say it'd be more believable as a PR move if it were another European and didn't say things that are slightly different from the last Pope as well as some action insofar as dealing with current problems as they arise in the church.

But with Frankie I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now simply because it is a possibility.

Well that's good to hear! I don't know many Catholics (or at least those who really give a shiat about some figurehead in Rome).
This is how I felt about Obama being elected; at first I was like, this cannot end well.  Someone's gonna get all hatey and shiat's gonna go back to being the same as before.  But hell, maybe there is hope in this world.
Neither of these two people can solve all of the problems of what they lead, but they are trying.  And they're being cool whilst doing so.

He has a whole industry/organizational structure to overcome. Right now it might appear that he is doing the religious equivalence of when GE-owned NBC showed they were being environmentally friendly by changing the logos to green on Earth Day and dimming studio lights on MSNBC shows. But these baby steps are a beginning. He can't just change the culture of the Church overnight. If he moves too fast he'd either be canonized by his former detractors or cannonized by his former supporters. Every move he makes today towards a more inclusive, less offensive Church will make it more difficult for the next guy to backtrack.

Fraggin awesome. It will never be enough for the haters, but this non-Catholic salutes you, Frankie da Pope.

To The Escape Zeppelin!: robohobo:But he won't. He's the pop single Pope. Designed to appeal to the broadest audience he can. The pat on the back, you're a-ok Pope. He's all about the ratings. Which is why he isn't considered Pope by many a true Catholic. In a business sense, he was a smart choice.

I haven't heard a bad word about him from even diehard Catholics who don't drink and go to church every day. I'm sure you could find someone who hates him but he seems like a big success with the overwhelming majority of even Catholics who are normally assholes.

he has been pretty much an ideal pope for us california catholics on the left coast... latin american, a lot of social justice stuff, less dogmatic but not contrary about sanctity of life & issues like that.

He parted with the Harley because even God can't make those things reliable.

Amen, my brother/sister.

Capo Del Bandito: It seems quite probable that this guy who lived and worked in shiatty poor areas of a developed country saw that poor people suffer and it's *possible* that it had an effect on him.

Came here to say pretty much this. Jesuits are a special breed. The teachings of Jesus are really big for them. The whole 'humble, help the poor, love everyone' thing is kinda their thing.

The Jesuits are the closest thing to Warrior Monks the Catholics have. "Give. Love. Forgive. Oh, and kick that guy, right there, in the jimmy."

They also tend to reaaaalllyyy irritate the other wings of the catholic church by reminding them of stuff like "Well, technically, the ban on priests marrying has no basis in the bible, but actually came about as a solution to a land-rights issue the church was experiencing in the..."

Which tends to make the rest of the church go "AAUUGHGHH SHUT UP SHUT UPPPP".

/I'm sorta amazed they elected one pope.

Yeah, that was my thought as well.  Headline on TFA says chopper.  That isn't a chopped bike.

The money raised will go toward Catholic charity Caritas Roma's renovations of a hostel and soup kitchen in Rome.

Look, I know a lot of farkers are blatantly anti-catholic/religion/God/what have you, but don't be so quick to judgement.

TiredWings: Ya know, somewhere there is a Cardinal that is going to be the next Pope thinking to himself " when I get in there I have to get crap back on the right path and to Hell with this charity and goody two slippers stuff!"

I sincerely believe that Josef ("Pope Emeritus Benedict) got into office and was pissed that John Paul II got rid of the Sedia Gestatoria. He totally seemed to be the type of guy who had no qualms asking to be carried around like Caesar.

My point is, hopefully these precedents and attitudes by Pope Francis will carry over, it isn't always easy to revert things.

Don't worry. As soon as he starts making strong anti-abortion speeches, the love for him will fade fast amongst the Fark liberals.

Yeah. Given the little that I know about his life as a cardinal (and his life as a pope appears to be a continuation of that), he seems pretty sincere in his beliefs.

No, more than that: he seems willing to follow his beliefs through to their logical conclusions when putting them into practice, even if they conflict with Catholic doctrine and tradition. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising in a Jesuit pope.

Anyway, it's pretty refreshing to see some "practice what you preach."

Man i'm not even Catholic and i'm kind liking this guy.... every darn thing I read about him is exactly what I expect from a Pope.

Then I remember what the church was like 500 years ago with the death and the punishment and the screaming and witchhunting and so on and so on....

He's a cool guy though.

Nice deflection with an attempt to change the subject. No one is arguing that God exists. No one in this thread has claimed that. We're talking about verifiable things like if this is a PR stunt or if Francis is a true believer. Your inability to provide proof just means you're a cynic and the kinda person who lives to be the 'know it all'.
